Annette and Tarja gave Nightwish their biggest hits. Floor hasn't given Nightwish any hits. That's why she's an honorable mention. Also, this list was made in 2014.
It's the downside of those lists. Often the reason for "just honorable mention" is: there is a similiar one way to high up. So honorable mentions often are actually top spots but like slightly worse then the actual pick. So you can often see them as like 3.5, 2.5 or even 1.5. So it just fells like a lot worse then it actually is.
Martin Hernan Abeszyc amy lee from evanescence is the only alternative metal/rock band i listened to or “knew” about.. it still wins over this because she is so beautiful omg
I'm going to give them some credit because it looks like they did a little bit of research. They probably knew the magnitude of Tarja for her to rank on top. But yea the rest of the list was bad.
I don't care what is happening from 10th to 2nd position, Tarja Turunen in the first place is justice to me! A divine singer-soprano, a whole music genre-setter, never misses a note, excellent work up to this day. Plus, one of the most majestic gothic beauties out there! I'm pleased! 😁
Ik. There's so many people who agree that Floor Jansen blows Tarja out of the water. 😂😂 Just because she brings a lot more flavor to the song, and it's not _entirely_ operatic. Sometimes we want an otherworldly variety in voice.
Yeah Tarja's voice earns the top spot for me, and her era was operatic metal, something that was quite different. But the current Nightwish lead Floor Jansen didn't make top 10? Hard to swallow! Were you afraid to be too Dutch list or too Nightwish? Because honestly if you make 5 best female metal singers, she is in that list. Nightwish is more famous band and lists like these are influenced by how famous the person is. This list was done 2014, if it was done now she would be better known.
Better known??????? Shes pretty well up there in the fans eyes. It's like when Paul Di' anno quit Iron Maiden ppl were mad, then came Bruce Dickinson , didn't take long for the fans to love him also, People can Love BOTH SINGERS. i'M SURE the fans of Nightwish would've loved BOTH of these talented women on this list......Ask Mojo needs to stop worrying what they think will be wrong and do whats right!
@@monicajean37 The infighting within the RUclips Nighwish community is rampant. And it is the Floor ultrafan people that are by far most into it, they shamelessly promote their favorite by pushing down the others. I think it has to do with them having no connection to the earlier Nightwish: they came with Floor and never have had affection to Tarja nor Anette, while as veteran Nightwish people have. Of course they are a minority, but YT Nightwish followers are by average I'm sure much more fanatic than fans who aren't actively participating. So the problem multiplies in YT. Not the same if one goes to a concert or something.
Symphonic metal is the whole genre. Nightwish is still symphonic metal. But early Tarja's era it was also operatic singing, and hence "operatic metal" is also used of such subgenre or band. Wikipedia: "Symphonic metal bands often feature classically trained female vocalists, giving rise to the nickname opera metal or operatic metal." There are many bands that do symphonic metal, but they don't all have operatic singing, which I used to point Tarja's era (well, actually only the early part of it was operatic, last two of her albums weren't).
@No one here Only singer I knew of that bunch was Amy Lee of Evanescence, she has an incredible voice and I was surprised she didn't rank higher. and what is this classical metal crap? I passionately HATE classical music, it has no place mixed with metal. JMHO
Not to mention that Tarja and Floor are very close friends, Floor even asked Tarja's blessing when Tuomas requested her to be officially made their lead singer back in 2013.
Sharon, Lacey and Amy were the women who got me through some DARK times when I was in middle school and high school. Their music was such a comfort during those really hard times for me.
Yeah. An update here is needed badly. These leading ladies at Hard Rock and Metal put the overwhelming majority of singers on mainstream radio to shame. And virtually no one even knows anything about them.
@@sarahmiddleton7205 Highly, highly recommend! I'm a huge fan of Halestorm and Lzzy, that whole genre. Watch Floor with Nightwish. First one most people watch is Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013. That will give a good view of her vocal range.
@@dalia1598 hahahaha floor could sing anyone of evanescence’s songs I think Amy lee could pull off two ghost love score is all I have to say or romanticide even slaying the dreamer every song I’m thinking of by nightwish floors voice is more powerful
Okay what really bothers me with this list is the fact that they introduce Lacey Sturm with that new singer. That is not Lacey and she is nothing compared to her. I think Lacey should have been higher on this list. That tiny girl has some vocals
The undisputed number 1 is Floor Jansen. But she is out of competition because she is not a human being - she is the valkyrie goddess decended from valhalla. No 2 is Taylor Momsen - she's the guardian for rock future.
Seconded! I can only think that they didn't want to go too Nightwish or too Dutch. Because honestly ridiculous if Floor isn't in top ten! Tarja made a big impact early days of symphonic metal with her operatic voice, and expanded into contemporary rock and pop-metal singing. She has been an influence to the whole generation of female metal singers and is still today a phenomenal voice and composer and keeps doing metal outside of Nightwish - who made this list knew what they were doing. Although many Nightwish veterans are die-hard Tarja worshippers, Floor has won their favor too, she is super popular here in Tarja's homefield Finland too. Granted, there are some who never can get over Tarja, but that's often the case with bands that change singers. Floor is fantastic and if you stick only with Tarja, I'm sorry but you miss great music.
Joan Jett is good, but she does not have the range or power in her voice of some of these other singers. Sorry, she doesn't belong here. She is not a great vocalist.
+Sam Larsen #1 isnt "Nightwish" but rather "Tarja Turunen". They even had Floor as a honourable mention ... even though Floor has a rather weak voice compared to Tarja.
Good list and amazing music taste, but why do you put Tarja at first, when Sharon is your favorite (sorry if this is a stupid question, I just don't get it.
fucking seriously, Floor Jansen an "honorable mention"? The woman has an incredible set of pipes and she's one of the pioneers of gothic metal with her band after forever. She now fronts Nightwish, for christ's sake
Literally came in the comments to say the same thing... Like fucking Christ. Not even just an accidental slip going over the career of the band. But OPENING with her while Lacey's name card is showing....
Probably because Jinjer only really became popular over the last year or so. This video is from 2014. Because she should be #1 on this list without a doubt. By far the best range of any vocalist, male or female. Saw them live at Heavy Montreal 2018 as well and she's just as good live as she is on albums.
i'm thinking too about what reason they have to just give honorable mention to Maria Brink and i'm asking where they stuck Heidi an Carla of Butcher babies. Buuut i'm not the one who made the list so i'll have to be happy witth Tarja on rank 1 anyway
Tarja Turunen earned her top spot her voice is unnaturally good, DAMN. Some of those honorable mentions should have been on the list instead of the others.
@carlossilva7530 what does Tarja have to do with this? The comment waa about Floor's stage presence and vocal ability. It had nothing to do with Tarja
Do people a favor and just type out the list, with time stamps if you want to go the extra mile, and you'd fix most of that disappointment for others, at least!
+BobbyBev95 Yeah, I wasn't even sure cause once I saw Lzzy Hale at #6 I skipped to 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and just skipped Honorable Mentions, cause they don't matter. I'd put my top 3 as 3 Amy Lee, 2 Taylor Momsen, 1 Lzzy Hale.
How can Floor Jansen only be an honourable mention? If you've ever heard her sing and seen her amazing presence on the stage, it should become clear that she should be at least in the top 3 imho.
I disagree.. the only spot she deserves is #1. This is suppose to be best female metal vocalist. She's the 1.. I just saw Nightwish in Las Vegas! I wasn't even a fan a year ago.. Her voice is something to behold!

@@Nikioko But it is Floor that has kept Nightwish alive since Tarja's departure from the band. And I first loved Floor Jansen in After Forever, which is my favorite female fronted Metal band.

@mark odenbrett if you watched then you did see ‘the chick’ from the agonist. Just the original one (Alissa White-Gluz), not the replacement one. Who was brought in after Alissa was kicked out by other band mates after being asked to join Arch Enemy
The #1 can sing mezzo-soprano, contralto AND coloratura soprano!!! That is insane! Obviously I have some training and I really appreciate that sort of talent. A very rare gem indeed!!!
With time and in her solo career, Tarja went on to expand her vocal techniques in order to feel more comfortable in the lower octaves, seen as she was "categorized" as a lyrical spinto soprano at the time. The results are noticeable in her more recent works, like in her cover of the Muse song "Supremacy"
@@carlossilva7530 agreed... i think I would still consider her a spinto, but she has really connected her entire range very fluidly. She's gotten a little less tonguey too, which has been amazing. but regardless is such a wonderful talent - Tarja is just a goddess.
What I really want to know is, what is the nominating and voting process? How many are working on these lists? Sometimes I get the feeling that it’s just one staffer and we have to endure their personal likes rather than having a larger statistical sampling.
Nope. If you really want to understand the rankings of this list and why they're placed there, you really need to listen to the bands and/or vocalists they appear with. You can't just automatically say your opinion, assuming it's the correct one. It's not.
@@Shouvak Floor is the best replacement of Tarja in Nightwish. She has her own advantages over Tarja performing some songs. But Tarja has unique voice for rock/metal singers and unmatching opera technics that allowed her to become the one, who formed entire metal subgenre.
@@HeatseekerSNT LOL she may have been the one to get noticed but she wasnt the first in her style, And she has deminished without the rest of the band.
Anyone who thinks Floor is the best frontwoman in hard rock and heavy metal, including Mojo, is ignoring all the all female hard rock and heavy metal bands from Japan. Keiko of Show-Ya blows Simone, Sharon, Amy etc away with her charismatic and badass psrformances since the eighties. And Eye of Mary's Blood rocks too. And there's Marina who was in Destrose and now in Mardelas. Lots of all female Japanese hard rock and heavy metal bands who played their guitars, basses and drums better than the lads and dudes in many metal bands too. Look East Mojo....these Japanese ladies are making hard rock and heavy metal exciting and fun, and not just Band-Maid
HeatseekerSNT Sorry but no. Nightwish themselves said they received their inspiration from The Gathering (Anneke van Giersbergen). Not that it matters though: both bands are utterly epic. Together with Epica. Or Lacuna Coil. Or Within Temptation. Or... sheesh, I can go on for a while. 😉
LudwigVanPeterson Indeed, it is like saying that Metallica loses every creditability whenever a TV Show like Glee, would cover Nothing Else Matters. (And what is wrong with Metal in programs like Glee in the first place, if they would do that more often maybe they could draw in a new fanbase)
Floor Jansen should be #1 in my opinion, though I recognize that it's all subjective. Thanks for mentioning Epica, Within Temptation, Halestorm, and Flyleaf though!
If it’s hard rock then any list that doesn’t have Pat benatar, lots Ford, Joan Jett, Liz phair or Nina and Louise from veruca salt doesn’t have any credibility.
I agree that Floor should be in top 3-5, but Tarja is still the best. 5 days ago I was on Tarja concert, despite the fact that today's music of Tarja band cannot be matched to Nightwish, but her voice and performace still unattainable
This should be 2 separate lists. One for the 10 operatic rock singers and one for 10 heavy metal singers there really is a BIG difference between those styles.
@asdas saddasd You think Tarja can't sing metal? You have not heard her singing "10th Man Down" "Kinslayer" or "Wishmaster" live? Even Floor or any other ladies on the list can't sing those songs with the commanding assertiveness and edge as Tarja.
@asdas saddasd You have not been really listening to Tarja post Nightwish in her solo albums and live shows then. She did use chest, head and mixed voice. If Romanticide sounds awful in the studio album, blame it on the arranger, mixer, sound engineer. Nightwish sounds better live as per their From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era with Tarja. You have to ask Tuomas on his arrangements of songs he keep changing. And in lower key for Floor to sing Tarja era songs too. Nothing wrong with that to tailor to Floor's voice. Cheers
@asdas saddasd By the way, you do know that Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson and Freddie Mercury also sang in almost operatic mode in the high notes. And they are not called opera singers.
Doro Pesch should have been #1. She has been consistently putting out albums since her Warlock days in the 80's until current day as a solo artist. She is a power house vocalist and very talented song writer
How come Joan Jett didn't even get mentioned in this list? One of the most important female rock singers from all time and she didn't appear not even at the "honored mentions".
I think she (Joan Jett) made it into the main countdown on the watchmojo.com Top 10 Female Guitarists of all Time...along with Mother Maybelle Carter...Johnny Cash's mother-in-law... .
maybe because she was known more for her work in the punk genre than in the metal genre? It is supposed to be a specific list, although frankly i think "Heavy Metal and Operatic Metal" would have made a more fitting title to their list.
Because Joan is not really Hard Rock, and she's definitely not Heavy Metal. Look for Joan in the top female singers of Rock N Roll, or Top 10 frontwomen.

That’s exactly what they did. I mean the first song in #10 isn’t even Lacey.

I left here laughing my ass off at Floor Jansen being an honorable mention 😂😂
Ik.
There's so many people who agree that Floor Jansen blows Tarja out of the water. 😂😂 Just because she brings a lot more flavor to the song, and it's not _entirely_ operatic. Sometimes we want an otherworldly variety in voice.

Sorry for horrible English
I agree
Aurinkohirvi lmao “operatic” it’s called symphonic metal
So I guess we're all just going to forget about Joan Jett???
Lizzy Hale makes the list and not Joan Jett?

The undisputed number 1 is Floor Jansen. But she is out of competition because she is not a human being - she is the valkyrie goddess decended from valhalla. No 2 is Taylor Momsen - she's the guardian for rock future.
Amy Lee has a hauntingly beautiful voice
Tarja makes sense as number one but how is Floor just an honorable mention? Also how is Sharon, Simone, and Lzzy so low?
Floor and Simone...the goddesses of metal.
Kaoru agreed
I like your taste, Kaoru.
I'll agree with Simone not Floor.
Joan Jett. How the FUCK do you not have Joan Jett?! I just... I just can't.

Look East Mojo....these Japanese ladies are making hard rock and heavy metal exciting and fun, and not just Band-Maid

it's actually a hard rock song and that one is more of a ballad. Here's to us is the song.

This should be 2 separate lists. One for the 10 operatic rock singers and one for 10 heavy metal singers there really is a BIG difference between those styles.
@Sharksbreath on both,kkkk
@asdas saddasd You think Tarja can't sing metal? You have not heard her singing "10th Man Down" "Kinslayer" or "Wishmaster" live? Even Floor or any other ladies on the list can't sing those songs with the commanding assertiveness and edge as Tarja.
@Sharksbreath Floor should be on the "pop" list as honourable mention. Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Lady Gaga etc are better.

Malice Catastrophe Yea. Isn’t she headlining with Lindsey Stirling or something?
Logan Occhionero you should listen to a few songs of Tarja with Nightwish and you will know why she is No 1
I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THIS LIST.
What is your list?
How come Joan Jett didn't even get mentioned in this list? One of the most important female rock singers from all time and she didn't appear not even at the "honored mentions".
Tbh
bcuz Lita Ford was better
There's no other front woman better than Ann Wilson from Heart
She’s not metal. I think she topped a rock list.
