The rubber seal does go on the cover nipple. The spring goes on metal side in recessed metal on the filter. It sure looks like you flipped it backwards. I watched it several times. I hope it didn’t hurt engine.
I think you could have given the oil type and amount of oil. Also, what oil were you changing? Combined engine and gearbox? A quick explanation makes these thing more interesting and informative

It does look that way but iv changed it since then and it was in the right way. Not sure how or why it looks that way.

Won't hurt it but it's thought on the top end .it will knock when it oil gets warm ... Better take it apart and put it in the right way ..

There is now way they would have a spring mate to a rubber gasket the gasket attaches to cap makes a seal
