      I usually only change the filter on my old landcruiser every 2nd service for 1 reason - the filter is a pain to get to and pours oil all down the side of the engine and onto the front axle. It's a huge mess.
      Also the filter really big (holds nearly a quart) - about 8 times the size of the one on my wife's Honda. It's done 250 000 miles and showing no signs of wearing out.

      Not always, buddy. Some filters costs more than $50 (at least here in Brazil). My older Honda' CB 500x and my Vstrom 650 have this price in its oil filters.

    Been a mechanic for over 40 years, change oil and filter every 5000km's not 15000 as recomended by manufacturer but filters are not $5 at least not where I live more like $40 but regardless its worth the cost, good quality synthetics alomg with filter is great insurance, my last vehicle a 2.5lt diesel 4x4 was still going strong at 600,000kms

    I first heard of this in the mid nineties from an old man. He said they used to do it when times were tough. Perhaps during ww2? Or the Great Depression? But filters are cheap enough and easy to get nowadays and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as they say.

    Excellent .You have mentioned the most important point . Bypass line will open in case filter gets clogged . So lets not assume filter will work as much as we hope . It will relieve itself from its duty cause the oil gear pump creates very high pressure and the paper will tear apart if its clogged . So the safety bypass will open

    • @P_RO_
      @P_RO_ 16 дней назад +1

      Several years ago a major filter manufacturer's oil filter for most Ford's was found to have a bypass which wouldn't open. If it clogged you could have zero oil flow with the small-block V8's it was used on and, your gauge would still indicate normal oil pressure, leading to loud expensive noises from under the hood and a case of pedestrianism for the driver. I stopped using all their products at that point, even though the problem was fixed. Lost trust is very hard to overcome.

    I used Amsoil on a 77 Malibu starting at 100,000 miles burning a little oil. Changed the oil filter every 6 months and never changed the oil again just topping up at the filter change. I got rid of that car at 350,000 miles because the rest of the car fell apart. The engine didn’t burn a drop and still ran good.

    • @iank6897

      bullshit, no oil is gonna last 250000 miles. If you're only topping up at filter changes its gotta be less than a quart each time

    Most of the newer cars use a small filter compared to the old cars. That smaller filter can trap less gunk and will clog far more easily, so it's more important than ever to change the filter every time.

    I change the oil every 10000km and filter every 20000km and use only Castrol oil .. never had any problems.. I do this on my turbo diesel navara because for some crazy reason they designed the filter to come off with the open side facing down and it’s a mess every time so it just skips a change and it doesn’t complain.. the Honda now get the same treatment and the same oil and it’s done over 300000km .

    • @P_RO_

      With upside-down spin-on filters poke a hole in the filter when draining your oil to allow air in, and almost all the oil in the filter will drain out. Much cleaner job.

    As a retired multi repair shop owner over 35 years not as a mechanic, I still own a 10 bay shop that I lease out. I understand the stigma attached to auto shops, AC Techs, builders, ten things your Doctor doesn't want you to know and the list goes on. I'm suspicious of a business that has to tell me how honest they are. The first thing you want to find out is if anyone is paid on commissions at all, if so buyer beware. I paid salary/hourly with no incentives for anything. The three ladies that worked the counter were ASE Certified and knew more than most customers especially for routine maintenance.
