See how to replace the rear brake shoes on a Honda Rancher 420 in this video from Partzilla.com. While the models are different, this process will be similar across TRX utility models.
This is a more complex job than just replacing the brake pads on your hydraulic brakes. The rear brake drum on the Honda Rancher TRX420 is roughly in the middle of the rear axle, so removing and replacing the brake shoes requires the removal of the wheel and then cracking open the rear brake drum housing.
Because the job is more labor intensive, it makes sense to change the four seals in the assembly if you're opening it up. There is one seal each on the front and back of the drum around the axle, one is an axle dust seal on the housing, and a fourth seal-- an O-ring-- seals the outer housing and brake drum.
In this video, John will guide you through the process. We’ll remove the wheel, and then attack two axle locking nuts that we’ll need to remove in order to slip the housing out over the axle. Then, we’ll open the brake drum and replace the seals and the brake shoes.
As we’re reassembling, it’s important that you correctly torque the axle nuts. John will do this by feel, but if you’re unsure that you’re getting the right torque on these nuts, there are two special tools that can assist you. Check 19:17 in the video to see exactly how these two tools work:
    Honda axle nut adapter: www.partzilla.com/product/hon...
Honda axle nut holder wrench: www.partzilla.com/product/hon...
Once that’s done, we’ll adjust the brakes and reinstall the wheel.

I have a 2013 I’ve never changed the pads on since it was new, granted they only recently wore out, survived 8,500 miles, I dread tearing into it, it’s been through a lot of mud and water and I can only imagine the rust. Hopefully your video will help, I appreciate the pace, not too fast, not too slow, and gives all the details one needs to know

I have a 2008 Rancher, and have used several of your videos to work on my quad. Really appreciate you guys doing these videos, and I have specifically ordered parts from your website instead of Amazon because of them. By the way, any idea when the fuel gauge will be back in stock? I ordered one a year ago and it still hasn't showed up.

Very helpful, I needed to know how to put the springs on the shoes, I watched you do it and went out and put my brakes back together in about 5 minutes, thanks for the tips. P. S. I fought those springs for about 45 minutes then said to myself….I know there’s a better way (a trick), so I came to you and sure enough you put the springs on first then installed the both shoes at the same time, easy as pie.

Hi well all I can say it a big thank you for you brilliant videos on doing so many jobs on the honda fourtrax.
I've followed you and all I can say is outstanding I've changed the oil in the front axle and doing the rear oil change today and done the engine oil and filter your videos are so helpful and clear.
I've 2 questions to ask how do I release the rear break plate as mine seems to be stuck I have slackened the cables off but the plate won't move.
And I am going to have to replace the key ignition switch as mine is bad is this quite a simple job or am I going to struggle on it .
I'm in Wales UK thank you

These seals all came seperately. We ordered them anticipating that we'd need to replace them,-- and since we were opeing it up anyway. You can see them here: www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/atv/2012/trx420fpm-2a-rancher/rear-brake-panel
