Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

I seriously think what pissed off the authorities the most is the fact that you chose to hang out with the locals to get a real feel of the city - which ultimately reflected the level of poverty and dilapidation of the infrastructure, something they're trying to hide - instead of going to the pristine beaches of Sharm El-Sheikh or the perfectly polished millionaire neighborhoods in New Cairo where many tourists choose to visit. I have to say it takes a lot of courage to do what you did. Hats off to you, sir!

    • @peteradelzaki

Nothing to do with police trying to hide stuff. Many of them are also poor and living in bad areas. A lot of them don't like their own government. Everyone knows that Cairo is a bit of a slum city, even in tourist areas, so I don't see why they would be hiding what we already know. The Arab Spring was 12 years ago now. The protests stopped several years ago and people are getting on with life.
The honest truth is that white, Christian, westerners are just seen as suspicious, with bad intentions and morals, so they kind of look down on us. If you aren't a regular, money spending tourist going to the Red Sea or Pyramids, then they will be suspicious. Sure they want you to spend western money, but they don't like you and act suspicious of you because of your ethnicity, religion, culture etc. It is similar in many Middle-eastern Muslim countries. I have also experienced the same thing in Tunisia, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran etc. If anything the authorities are ultimately trying to facilitate a bribe from you, as they know you have money. Like they don't respect you.
Obviously there are many good Egyptians who don't care about any of that, but a large portion of the country sees it this way. It is partly due to culture but mostly due to Islam. I noticed it with a lot of people in Sharm El-Sheikh, except for the actual hotel workers. A lot of shop owners, tour operators and taxi drivers are rude, inconsiderate and look down on you. They act different to their 'brothers' though.

My family and I just left Egypt about a month ago. We stayed for two weeks. The sites were beautiful, and I enjoyed a lot of the food, but I got tired of it after a while. I hated having to be so assertive with people. My husband had to get very stern because they kept trying to sell us stuff or badger us for tips. We had a tour Guide. They kept us safe. There were moments when the police had to get involved with the people getting aggressive, and my husband had to get aggressive too.

i always felt that sonny had something other food review shows didn’t. he does his research, asks around, and with the information he gets he educates his viewers instead of just eating ‘exotic’ food. i love that he shows a lot of background and history on the culture of the places he visits, it feels very genuine and connective. he shows what’s behind the scenes, the real parts of places he visits. many shows don’t do this, or the media only wants to portray their country a certain way, but the fact is that seeing the true parts of countries is beautiful. adding on he actually cares about his team and is inclusive.

A woman run towards a cop and shouted to him him that I was taking pictures. The cop took my camera took my passport and all three went to a police van where the police officer repeated my terrible crime to his chief. This one called his chief at the police station, checked once again my passport, hold my camera and after more that twenty minute someone had the brilliant idea that if I erased the picture, the problem was over.
Same situation on the train to Iskandareya to Port Said when I tried to take a picture of a ship crossing the channel: here the good patriot was a soldier that wanted my camera, my passport and some money from me to say nothing to his chiefs. Fortunately there were police officers in the train and stopped him.
Same story at a humble wharf when I tried to take a picture of a boat that crosses the river in Damietta: here the patriots were the passengers that shouted angrily that it was mamnuah (forbidden).

We just put it out of sight and out of mind. If you have the stomach for it just look up the documentary "Dominion" (Warning: I do mean if you have the stomach for it, this is not an exaggeration) that shows that if anything we're less humane because we have to mass produce the food, which means cutting corners in animal comfort and them being quick and cleanly dispatched. And this is coming from someone who still eats meat, I ain't even on some vegan crusade, I'm just pointing out that if anyone thinks this is only something "they" do they're dead wrong.

Here are a couple of interesting facts I thought I'd share:
Not just high-quality filming gear but even average cameras have been a big no-no here in Egypt for as long as I can remember and it only got worse after the Revolution and the amount of foreign coverage of it here. Authorities simply won't let you film anything here, especially in El Tahrir Square (for reasons too silly to mention) where the 2011 revolution started. Also, I found it interesting how the only pics and videos that the police forced you to "delete" (at least from what is shown in this video) are the ones you shot in the bread bakery. Bread in Egypt is not just the staple food carrier or "utensil" as Sonny called it; it holds a MAJOR political significance. In the revolution, the motto was literally translated to "Bread, Freedom, Social Justice". One of the motives for the breakout of the Revolution was how hard it got for people to attain bread which almost equals famine for Egyptians.
Anyway, glad you liked the food and I hope that the socio-political problems in Egypt get fixed asap because it would be a shame to see such a beautiful country with such a mind-blowing culture and history go to waste.

Recently found your Channel, Love the LONG food tours of these different countries and the fact that you will try ANYTHING. I am sad to say that I will probably never see the pyramids because there is no way I will go to Egypt after seeing the blatant corruption in this video. Despite having to endure this, you still put out an amazing video, thank you!

You're not the only one who had problems shooting in Egypt. I did that myself there and had to run from authorities because I was being charged with 37 counts of first, second and third degree murder.

Sonny your videos usually show the very real culture of wherever you go. But something about this series took it to a whole new level. Everything was so raw. I think the added troubles you had to face here helped keep us on edge too. This was great!

51:00 The word in Arabic on the camel’s back was “Dahab” which translates to Gold. From what I could remember of my Arabic . So Sonny got a gold one . Thank you very much for this in-depth exploration of the true life of ordinary people in Egypt you got to experience for a bit along with dealing with corrupt officials. The people are clearly hospitable and glad to have lived it through this vid- new subscriber 💪🏼

I seriously think Sunny looked bad still going on with buying the camel. Aside from being overcharged, all the sellers were torturing their camels. It was completely sick to see how disrespectful they treat an animal that they use as mounts, specifically evolved for that disgusting country.
If I were him, I would have stepped in and stepped back out. Especially if I felt my filming team was in danger.
I get the show must go on, but sometimes its best to flip a country the bird and just walk away.

@@heartlessoni13 Sadly animal cruelty is incredibly common in Egypt as many people are uneducated and see it as "normal" to treat their animals this way - they think it's alright because they're "only animals". Source: lived there for 6 years, am half Egyptian.
