Even in Texas summers, they don't want to start if the glow plug system isn't working. Good thing is the glow plug system is really easy to understand and repair. Never seen an IDI glow plug controller on the left side of the engine; on the turbo model, they're always on the right fender, and on the non-turbo engines they're on the back of the motor. The IDIT was done less for power and more for killing smoke. There were IIRC at least three tunes of the IDI, depending on the altitude they were destined to run at. Run a sea-level truck in, say, Denver and it'd be nothing but black smoke. Run a high altitude calibration at sea level and it was just as gutless as it would be at home, just with more clatter. With the turbo, the engine never realized it was anywhere but at sea level. Oh, and I'm still driving an IDI. Yeah, it's gutless, but it runs, and I don't have to deal with electronics issues that come up on newer trucks.

The biggest pain was having to climb under it with a propane torch to heat up the starter so it would turn when it hit -30f. Still runs great.
Hey, I've got one of those! Slow project, but last I tried she runs decently well on old fuel. Slightly undersized true duals, sounds absolutely beautiful.
I loved the "smoke screen" option in my old '84 6.9. If it was 50 degrees or below, you needed two batteries and half a can of cosby sauce to get it going. The car parked behind would totally disappear into a thick cloud of smoke! If it was exactly 51 degrees or higher, you barely had to bump the key and it started like you just shut it off - no glow plugs, no spray, no smoke! A 7.3 idi is how I found your channel. I had a 92 model f350 and started looking at youtube videos about it after I bought it. Found slave lake then went to your channel from there. We've come full circle.
So a guy here in Washington State is building 400hp turbo IDI’s. He’s won his class at tractor pulls. He’s even out pulled modern diesels with the IDI’s he builds. Kind of cool.
Starter solenoid fixes glow plug issue, my 7.3 idi has been the absolute most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned hands down.. change the oil and change the oil cooler seals lol trust.. other than basic maintenance I haven’t had an issue.. return lines are basic maintenance that should be done every 3-5 years either way.. my 89 7.3 idi has a banks turbo i put on it and everyone said it’ll grenade.. 11 years later n I’m still waiting for it to “grenade”. Plus my truck runs on pretty much anything i dump in the tank.. which happens to be hydraulic oil at the moment.. last week was old olive oil. Have no cavitation issues with 340k miles on it. 5 speed happiness
I’m a transplant New Brunswick guy living in Drayton Valley Alberta who has worked in the patch his whole life , I’ve been to Slave Lake and I love both of the Canadian channels
Love watching Peg’s videos. No one has more dedications to keeping that old iron kicking than him. Ol Slave Lake is a legend in a world of usedtubes vehicles.
Yep I lot of old UPS brown trucks use 7.3's paired with 5 speed Spicers. My building still has quite a few, they just won't die. You are right though, very gutless. Have to ring them out to get any power/speed out of them.
I never thought I would see a channel that would make Deboss Garage seem clean, polite, and cultured, with nice, clean, newish equipment. But ZipTiesNBiasPlies is it.
Never had an issue with glow plugs, or cold starts down to 0 F. Your friends IDI in Africa probably Isn't maintained well. Return lines are kind of a pain, but not as bad as other fuel systems. The achilles heel in my opinion is the fuel selector valve, and that they always leak oil. Other than that, they get decent mileage and provide adequate power to most uses, and last a long time. That's why we still see them being used
I,D,I. I think they rock, 1st and 2nd gear Great power for what it is, 3rd n O drive It falls on it's Face, Great plow trucks, Good set of glow plugs, the thing was just loyal , would plow 40 hours straight without missing a beat !!
With a bit of searching you can find commercial continuous duty type glow plugs that fit these and with those the glow plug control circuit can be reduced down to a manual control and they normal count to XX before starting method. Beyond that they can also be converted to a intake heater grid or multi glow coil type intake air preheat that works well too.
AC60G plugs will fit, but the threads are a little too short for them to fully seat. The tips don’t protrude from the prechambers, though, so they’re safe. They DO NOT burn out, I’ve left them hooked to a battery charger for hours at a full 12V, glowing orange the whole time. ZD9s lasted about 4 minutes. I never tested Wellmans.
I can't say I ever had any problems starting a 7.3 where I live in Norway... Yes it smokes like hell, but it starts easy as long as the batteries are good.. I've had a 250 XLT Clubwagon and a 350 Customline with the same engine (non turbo) though.. But they always started, even after sitting for 6 months.. I love those 7.3 ❤ and they run 300k+km with not much problems... The electronics, is another story..
Starting the engine before the wait to start light goes out will not damage glow plugs. The glow plug systems on these continue to apply voltage after the engine has started. Most likely a damaged or defective glow plug controller will drive the glow plugs beyond their duty cycle and destroy them.
The old 498 Leyland engine used in the JCB used to have cavitation problems which was easily solved with aftermarket liners which were chrome plated on the outside as long as you used 505 or more antifreeze there was no longer any cavitation problem.
I bought an f 250 with a 7.3 idi 5sp a few years back. I love the simplicity of these engines for example the ones with manual trans don't even have a pcm, fuel pump is an old school mechanical fuel pump ran by the engine, no annoying in tank fuel pump, compare the cost of injector pumps/ injectors to other more modern diesels and see just how much less it costs to replace these parts. one thing you didn't mention is that these engines will run on anything you pour into the fuel tank, I even ran on a gas/diesel mixture once. I have friends with other diesels that have had issues that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to repair and it makes me happy that my truck wont stop running while they are constantly fixing theirs. when you buy one of these trucks you are buying a truck with a tractor engine under the hood, your friends may beat you up the hill every time, but you will arrive at point B every time. this is the last generation of diesel you can buy that isn't choked down by catyletic converters, EGR valves, DPF's, SCR and all the other emissions equipment that just adds more expense down the road.
I had an 89 passenger van with a 6.9. Glow plugs were fubar, so was the controller. It would light off without ether at +30, still start down to -25 with plenty of go juice. Straight piped, and sounded awesome. Gave it away when changed provinces, cause it would never pass an inspection.
Just direct injection diesels starts fine without glow plugs, prechamber diesels like all to be in perfect shape, here when mine uncle had vw golf mk2 diesel, when one glow plug got weak,it is no start 😁
Nothing that can't be remedied with a shot of wd-40. Or ether...when you just don't give a damn anymore. Grew up with an 83 6.9 that we just never bothered to replace the glow plugs on. Shot of ether every morning and run it all day. Half million miles and a ton on idle hours and it took a wreck to stop it. The engine still ran, just not much truck left.
the amount of hard work, dedication and destruction , on this channel is heartwarming! god please bring happy days again,, bless these boys with enough junk to stay entertained !
For the uninitiated: Keep in mind, Ol' Peg never has diesel in his yard. He runs the thing on whatever flammable liquid he can find. Never fixes anything, and bags on it like a hand-me-down fourwheeler. Slave Lake's sole purpose is revving it till it dies for videos, and dragging dead trees and trucks around the yard. For those who haven't, y'all should check out Zip Ties n Bias Plies. His channel is good fun, and hes who sent me to Deboss Garage.
I have a question!!! If you always wait for the wait to start light to go off in cold conditions before cranking, will the glow plugs last much longer due to the proper usage? I was confused about this part.
Yes you wait for the "wait to start light" to go off then you start cranking... this is true for both 6.9L 7.3L idi as well as the Chevy 6.2L and 6.5L Detroit... if you don't wait to start cranking the truck over you will destroy your glow plugs in 3-5 starts

Love 7.3 IDI... Only two problems with them is they don't make them anymore, and if it has a 4 speed manual transmission rather than a preferred 5 speed.
Cavitation is when a fluid boils due to pressure reduction. It is usually associated with pipe restrictions and bends in liquids that are moving too quickly for the plumbing situation. This has nothing to do with pistons. Now, there might be some cavitation in the engine, but your description of what cavitation is, was off the mark.
@Doug Deshawn I suspect that there's actually cavitation going on as Rich is pretty knowledgeable, but the statement made was "cavitation is " bla bla bla that was not a correct description of the physical phenomenon of "cavitation."
@@stephendee7839 happens due to combustion pressure slightly deflecting the cylinder wall and then it coming back true. When it comes back to place it creates a slight vaccum on the coolant side and the coolant boils off. Those bubbles then collapsing is what eats away at the block/liner
Good maintenance is key. My grandpa owns a 89 F350. It doesn’t have the IDI 7.3L but other than seats needing to be redone and a new ball shifter. She is still mint 👌🏾

Awesome! Love how you did this video to have ol' Zipties N Bias Plies act as a counterpoint! Thumbs up!
So a guy here in Washington State is building 400hp turbo IDI’s. He’s won his class at tractor pulls. He’s even out pulled modern diesels with the IDI’s he builds. Kind of cool.
Omg that's amazing. I have a 92
Starter solenoid fixes glow plug issue, my 7.3 idi has been the absolute most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned hands down.. change the oil and change the oil cooler seals lol trust.. other than basic maintenance I haven’t had an issue.. return lines are basic maintenance that should be done every 3-5 years either way.. my 89 7.3 idi has a banks turbo i put on it and everyone said it’ll grenade.. 11 years later n I’m still waiting for it to “grenade”. Plus my truck runs on pretty much anything i dump in the tank.. which happens to be hydraulic oil at the moment.. last week was old olive oil. Have no cavitation issues with 340k miles on it. 5 speed happiness
Yep !! Oil in the fuel whatever doesn’t matter
I do two cycle wheel in there lol!
I’m a transplant New Brunswick guy living in Drayton Valley Alberta who has worked in the patch his whole life , I’ve been to Slave Lake and I love both of the Canadian channels
At 6:33 I’m pretty sure the “7.3” is a 6.0 haha
That definitely looks like one
LOL Yup, that's a 6.0. You can tell it's an early 6.0 because it still has the throttle body assembly. They stopped putting them in after 2005.
@@CollinWeis hello there Collin
Yeah, it’s a 6.0. The 7.3 valve covers were a plane cover w no fancy details. The 1st gen 7.3 is different from the 98-2003 the 01-03 had weaker rods.
Zip Ties is a national treasure. Just a treat to watch and nothing but loyal.
You missed an f bomb or two. Hard to keep up with ol zip ties 😂
Love watching Peg’s videos. No one has more dedications to keeping that old iron kicking than him. Ol Slave Lake is a legend in a world of usedtubes vehicles.
Hahahaha the cat at the end made me laugh so loud it, scared MY cat and my wife and I almost fell out the bed! F@#* that was funny!
Yep I lot of old UPS brown trucks use 7.3's paired with 5 speed Spicers. My building still has quite a few, they just won't die. You are right though, very gutless. Have to ring them out to get any power/speed out of them.
Zip Ties is freaking Mint!
That's why we still see them being used
My brother has a IDI and he absolutly loves it. He hauls all types of machinery with his with ease
Love my IDI, curious what you got challenge, cant wait. Whistlin diesel might have a dmax halfway there.
I,D,I.
I think they rock,
1st and 2nd gear
Great power for what it is, 3rd n O drive
It falls on it's Face,
Great plow trucks,
Good set of glow plugs, the thing was just loyal , would plow 40 hours straight without missing a beat !!
Fuckkkkin minttttt
I’m running an 89 7.3! Saved her from a field in southern Alberta 5 years ago and now she lives on the west coast 👍
2:15 Like how you bleep the first f bomb then give up 10 seconds later
It would be hilarious to do a full restoration of old slave lake
And as soon as shes all purty and shiny, send her right back to hell
I can't say I ever had any problems starting a 7.3 where I live in Norway... Yes it smokes like hell, but it starts easy as long as the batteries are good.. I've had a 250 XLT Clubwagon and a 350 Customline with the same engine (non turbo) though.. But they always started, even after sitting for 6 months.. I love those 7.3 ❤ and they run 300k+km with not much problems... The electronics, is another story..
Yeeeew don neeed to check yer oil!! Oem hoodlatch though. Mint!! 👌
Cat says it all at the end. And I haven't seen anything that will take what slave lake takes. Ol girl stands up and take it regardless.loyal
Love my idi, plenty of the obs’s running around here. Love this video yeehaaaaaaa
Starting the engine before the wait to start light goes out will not damage glow plugs. The glow plug systems on these continue to apply voltage after the engine has started. Most likely a damaged or defective glow plug controller will drive the glow plugs beyond their duty cycle and destroy them.
I love you DeBoss, but Zip ties for life!
literally between electronics and such, the old 12v cummins the 7.3 idi, and 6.2/6.5 are bloody loyal, no worries of computers b-lineing it out
Peg and Dirty Rich 🤘
Looks like it's time for a cold snack and some earplugs for the kids 👍
The old 498 Leyland engine used in the JCB used to have cavitation problems which was easily solved with aftermarket liners which were chrome plated on the outside as long as you used 505 or more antifreeze there was no longer any cavitation problem.
Oh Snap! theres gonna be a sick dope dopety dope throw down! its going to be MINT!!!!
I love my 7.3 idi I’ve had half a dozen and I love them.
Lol kinda thought I wanted a 7.3 Powerstroke but seeing this shit makes me want a 7.3 IDI as my first diesel
I've used many diesels and still nothing makes me happier than a idi. Mint
Just direct injection diesels starts fine without glow plugs, prechamber diesels like all to be in perfect shape, here when mine uncle had vw golf mk2 diesel, when one glow plug got weak,it is no start 😁
It's gonna be a lot easier cranking and starting a small diesel that's a fourth the size of a 7.3 guaranteed.
Random Channel every engine has starting sistem designed to start that engine, golf starter wouldnt start 7.3,not same
Nothing that can't be remedied with a shot of wd-40.
You clearly dont watch zip ties and biasplys
Jeremy hanna nope 😁
I know my other comment was off topic, but sometimes when I see guys doing what I wish I coulda done this little project always pops into my head.
Peg is my spirit Animal
I'm stoked that you gave Zip ties and bias plies a shout out! Hes fuckin hilarious and deserves it.
No cred to IH that actually made the engine for Ford?
Thats why i own three of them the truck underneath is just a shipping container. The international is the reason i love the 7.3
the amount of hard work, dedication and destruction , on this channel is heartwarming! god please bring happy days again,, bless these boys with enough junk to stay entertained !
I love the Canadian talent, keeps me laughing 😂
For the uninitiated:
Keep in mind, Ol' Peg never has diesel in his yard.
The idi is my favorite sounding diesel, has a cool grumble. 3208 come second
Dt466 for me. 3208 is great too. 7.3 and 6.5 chev cold are great straight
Idis sound good idling but when you hit the accelerator they sound like a big block gasser
Andrew Stratton Which is why they sound so great.
I couldn’t agree more
I’ve watched this for the millionth time. Just love how peg proves the idi. Love it
that truck earned it's name slave lake
I had an 88 F-350 with an 7.3 IDI N.A. and every single issue you have identified on here I had to fix.
I have a question!!! If you always wait for the wait to start light to go off in cold conditions before cranking, will the glow plugs last much longer due to the proper usage? I was confused about this part.
Yes you wait for the "wait to start light" to go off then you start cranking... this is true for both 6.9L 7.3L idi as well as the Chevy 6.2L and 6.5L Detroit... if you don't wait to start cranking the truck over you will destroy your glow plugs in 3-5 starts
i have never been more blessed in my life
LOL. I've watched every "ZIP TIES N BIAS PLIES" Video out there and they are HiLL AriaOuS! "It got impounded in Beaverlodge" . Hey that's the town I was raised in when I was 6 until 10. Crazy man! just remember "YoU Don"T NEEd any oIL in it To run"!
He's dumb AF
What a treat
I had a '92 F350 crew cab. It went straight from the lot to a local diesel shop here and we installed a Banks turbo kit. That truck was an awesome truck!
