We always hear people tell us to #BeAuthentic. But what does that mean? 🤔
Well, maybe the answer is best explained in a quick story. 📖
Today, in many circles, I'm widely regarded as the world's number one event emcee. But how did I get there?
The answer... authenticity 💯
Here's what happened.
Back around 2006/2007, I was extremely new to my event hosting career. I wasn't even getting paid for it. I was just hosting events for the company I worked for, as we would put on events almost every other month.
At one event, my boss comes running backstage and tells me that he needs me to kill 15 minutes because the speaker who is supposed to be on stage is not arrived yet. 😵‍💫😵‍💫
Internally, I'm freaking out. I have no clue how to waste time on stage for 15 minutes...
Having been a hip-hop dancer for much of my life, the only thing that popped in my head, was to dance hip hop with the crowd. 😬😬
I thought the idea was absolute nonsense. These people were not fans of hip hop. They were there to learn about internet marketing, not dance to Missy Elliott or Black Eyed Peas or whatever song I wanted to play.
As I couldn't think of anything else, I had to roll with it. I stood up and let my authentic hip-hop dancing self come through... in doing so, I gave the audience an experience they had never had an event or seminar before.
Adding that bit of authenticity separated me from every other event host they had ever experienced.
Today, if I don't dance hip hop with a crowd, something is wrong 😂.
That bit of authenticity separated me from everybody else in my niche.
Without it, I don't know if I would be booked out a year in advance.
So....
What's that bit of YOU that makes you different or unique? Embrace that. Lean into it. That's how you separate yourself from everybody else doing the same thing you're doing.
