Honestly their rendition has a certain charm to it that his and Rosario’s doesn’t. Daphne may not have the perfect voice, but Jonathan never imagined Mimi to sound perfect. Daphne knows exactly how to bring Mimi’s character to life and she doesn’t get enough credit for that. Renee is still my favorite Mimi, but it still bothers me how much flack Daphne gets for not having the stereotypical perfect voice of a Broadway performer.

very true, daphne never deserved any of those critiques. anyone in that school of thought doesn't appreciate the full embodiment of a character, which is way more than hitting certain notes and executing fancy dance moves. Renee was a great Mimi but to me no one ever captured the soul of Mimi like Daphne and she hasn't been topped yet.

everybody getting so wound up against rosario saying daphne the only real mimi lol chill they're both good and brought different qualities to the character, daphne you get the worn out junkie trying to survive and rosario you get the young but trying to be older part of her character
@DJJ I never said she was an old junkie, I said she brought the qualities of one, whereas Rosario brought the young girl on the streets quality. I love both. Learn to read before responding like an ass with something shoved up your ass. Lol.

I think in 1996 Daphne fit Mimi's character and had a more rough around the edges feel that came along with someone in the grips of addiction back then. Rosario is different and to me better represents the current "face of addiction". I feel like the opioid crisis has taken so many people that don't fit the normal stereotypical "drug addict" so many of these kids are those polished upper class kids that don't fully fit into the drug world. For this reason Rosarios portrayal has grown on me.
With that said anyone that goes near methadone mile in Boston will see that the face of addiction is very cruel and absolutely destroys anyone it gets a hold of. It's too sad.

I’ve only seen three versions of rent and I wasn’t disappointed in any of them. I saw as much as I could find of the original Rent on broadway with the original cast, the movie and the rent live on fox and I enjoyed all three

I love Daphne and I remember when I got into the movie I watched a ton of videos of Daphne’s performance and I truly loved her on stage. But I couldn’t see her voice or her in the movie. I think Rosario did well in it and I loved her voice too even though it was nothing like daphne cool ass voice

I loved Rent. Daphne just embodies the spirit of the lower East side. The movie was pretty awful. It was sanitized and Rosario was too pretty and too unbelievable

Mimi was a junkie. And Daphne has that imperfect frailty to her voice, that gave character to the song. She was the first of the OBC to leave.
It is not so much that it's imperfect, I just really don't like her voice! Her acting is perfect, but personally I prefer Rosario Dawson because I think she sounds better. They're both very talented, its just my opinion!

I think she sounds too old for Mimi, even in the original recording. I described it as sounding like an audible pout to someone the other day, but that doesn't make much sense outside of my head haha.
