- Two years after its 1996 Broadway premiere, "Rent" had its West End debut. Four of the original '96 leads---Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Jesse L. Martin and Wilson Jermaine Heredia---repeated their roles in London.

I can't believe this! I am a Rent-Head, saw the original cast in June of '96. Saw it a year later with much of the original cast (Idina was phenomenal 14-15 months in) and saw it on Broadway at least once more and touring companies in San Francisco 3 times. And yet... I had no idea that Messrs. Pascal & Rapp replicated in London. It wasn't a huge hit in London but I am very glad for this footage just the same!

Previewed 21 April 1998, opened 12 May 1998, closed 30 October 1999 at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London.” That’s about a year and a half or roughly around 575 to 600 performances. Compared to the original Broadway production’s 12 year run and 5,000 plus performances, I’d say the original London production was not a big hit. This is not a question of quality just a reference that I was glad the show was recorded.
This show is so special to me. I literally got teary watching this. Proud RENThead for life!

I'm not sure, but the VERY loud high scream from the audience during the applause may well have been me. 😂 I saw Rent countless times and was there on Opening Night.

Fun fact: that video isn’t actually from opening night, interestingly! Years and years of mislabelling has confused it tremendously but the general discovery is that the video was taken a week and a half earlier in previews, April 19th 1996! (thank god Aurora provides crystal clear and legible recordings so we can *actually* see what their performances were like)
