My god! the best video I have watched on this topic! btw I have watched plenty!!! thanks!
Right On!! 🙌👍☘️✨ Thanks for watching!!
Facts
I just bought a big screen TV, zircon stud finder, brushless dewalt power drill , and 2 TV mounts and your tutorial ,im ready , thanks
Right on Phil!! 👍✨ Sounds like you’ll be popping up some popcorn soon! 🍿 Thanks for watching!
As a guy that had his first mishap with drilling into a water pipe running through a stud ima add as advice to double check, double check and triple check before you drive a long screw or lag bolt through your wall. In 20 years of working in this carpentry field I hadn’t ever had a mishap but it’s bound to happen. You’d be surprised to find out what can lie behind an old homes walls, it’s literally like opening up Pandora’s box. Better to fail than to never have tried, so getrrr done
It's amazing how many long time home owners don't know some of what you cover in this video. Thanks for your time and suggestions on test equipment.
Right On John! Thanks 😃 I feel like I could have covered more but I’m not sure who wants to watch an hour about finding studs 😵💫
Been there done that
I know exactly how it feels 👍
What a legend. The workshop is a dream.
A very detailed instructor, I can watch him explain all day. Thanks for the time spent doing this.
Right On! ✨Thanks, I’m glad you liked the video!
Time is very valuable, and just wanted to say thank you for taking the time and explaining all these methods. Job well done. I've been wanting to get that Franklin stud finder for a while, heard a lot of good feed back from it.
Right On! 👍🪵 Thanks David!!
Thank you for a very detailed, comprehensive yet easily understood and surprisingly entertaining instructional video! You are a natural teacher!
I like using a magnet just to help verify. My Franklin kept showing voltage so I drilled a hole and used a borescope to verify there was nothing between/through the studs. You can get them for your phone wired or wireless for like $30. Kind of a bummer to put a hole in the wall but the peace of mind of actually seeing in the wall is worth it IMO. Especially in an older house where you know it's undergone many not so great renovations.
How did you know I had a Gramma Georgina? And how did you know she gave me that painting? you are amazing!!! LOLOL thanks for the tips and advice, great vid!
Ha! Grandma Georgina is the best! 🙌😄 Right On! 🙌Thanks!
Interesting my mech room is right behind the kitchen, one floor down. Going to take a look for nail plates. 2nd bathroom wall with light switch drives the ac alert crazy on stud finder for the whole panel.
Great video. I’ve done many cab installs and will share all studs are not always 16 inch on center. This can be maddening when hanging heavy upper cabs. There fore spend whatever time it takes to locate studs and mark them before obviously
What if it's a condo and has metal studs lol
Heard some horror stories of people getting fried while drilling in walls.. really wonderimg what is the safest way to avoid hitting an electrical cord
Hi Jon! That Franklin Stud finder is the cats pajamas!!!! WOW! Great presentation! Thanks!!!!
Yes indeed! That Franklin stud finder purrs! 🐈 Right On John! I really like how your Klein knife turned out!
Many thanks for this info for a transplant from a country that uses exclusively brick construction.
Right On! 👍🙌
Sometimes if the drywall is thick the stud finder will show studs all over the place. So now I use a combination of laser level which will easily show you a vertical line of the stud. Another method is using an endoscope camera if you are not sure where the cables are running. You can drill a small hole in the wall and put the camera inside. Then you just touch up the wall with caulk and paint.
Ah that’s perfect! Yes the endoscope! I have not purchased one yet but always have thought about buying one.
What endoscope do you recommend?
@@Handlebrake2 - Ask a proctologist.
@@csmith8503 you're a bit late, buddy.
Wow! You are a genius - you have collected and showed various types of stud finders and the explanation was really helpful. THANK YOU!
My Step Grandfather had a great method for putting in a window and finding out what was in the wall...........Plunge in a chainsaw and let the chips fall where they may !!
Of course he he plowed right thru the electric line in the process.............Too bad he died so young, I really miss hearing about his weekly misadventures, as a kid it was a regular thing to hear about the goofy stuff he did.
Raw Bacon! 👏👏👏 You always have the best stories! 😂🤣 Your Grandfather sounds like a great guy!
Good tips for installing anything on wall boards. You mentioned how installers that put up drywall do it fast. An example : On the show "Flip This House" a construction worker or the co host drilling a drywall screw hit the plastic pipes & immediately water started gushing out. That was an awkward moment. Be careful how you drill or screw in these methods.
Thank you for this video! This is by far the best video on finding studs and wires! Bless you!
This video was extremely helpful. So so many helpful tips. I should be an expert now. I think I was hitting a nail plate last night and when I go back to finish mounting this tv later this week, I should for sure be confident on knowing I’m in a stud. 98% sure I was in dry wall! Reason why I wanted to just watch some more videos again and I am glad I found yours
Right On! 🙌👍✨
How do you know if there is something running through the stud if there is no metal plate protecting it? Could I drill through the drywall in the intended place where the mounting bolt is going, and then drill 1/16 to 1/8th inch at a time and then look inside the hole with a flashlight and see if there is a cavity where romex or pipe may be running through?
little mention of not "hitting wires or pipes"
Right! Trying to show how nail plates work. Hopefully some good info in the video! 👍✨
@@RightOnJonCrane Absolutely good information In the video. Just a misleading title.
@@chiebert290 that’s what I was looking for too 😅
Basically trust your shitty inaccurate tools that these lying companies claim will find AC and pray you don't get zapped to death or hit a gas pipe and just go boom when said shitty tools don't work
Try a borescope. Requires a decent sized hole but seeing in the wall removes all doubts.
Great information. The Franklin along with a strong magnet is a GREAT combination.
Thank you! Extremely helpful. Although I didn’t know Terrence McKenna was doing construction diy videos on RUclips lol.
Right On! 🙌👍 Yeah, every so often he drops in on his magic carpet! He’s on a wild trip!! 😵💫✨ 🌈✨⚡️
Thank you so much cuz I was hanging a 65 inch tv and your video helped
Right On! 👍🙌✨ Thanks for the feedback! Im glad it helped!
That Franklin sensor is awesome! Big thanks for this vid otherwise I wouldn't have known about it.
Im learning how to hang shelves so I’m completely new. My question is. Is the stud finder used to let us know THAT WE CAN MOUNT THE SHELVE ON THERE. Like, the studs is what we want to drill the screws on right ??
Yes
Thank you. I have the same question and it is always not included as it must be obvious to everyone but me 😊
@1:14, aside from the cpvc water lines, they missed 3 nail plates. One in the middle and two in the corner.
Once I've discovered where a Stud is, I create a "Witness Board" where I mark off a series of studs at 16" centers. I use a spare piece of stud to mark the widths, the fill in between the ines. It makes marking the studs much faster this way.
Very thorough demonstration, very well done 👍
Seriously, thank you so much. You are a wonderful teacher. This video is a game changer. I've learned so much.
Dream WORKSHOP!! OMG
Thanks Jon, the magnets in the jacketing is a great idea. I'll have to make one.
Right On Chris! 👍✨
This post is dec 2023. I have a 3 year old Costco Precision Stud finder that is a lime green version of your Franklin stud finder. I also have a brand new Zircon M4. My 3yo Costco stud finder is infinitely better than the Zircon. I only bought the Zircon because I misplaced my Costco stud finder. I figured I would get the top of the line Zircon and give a go. It doesn’t operate ANYTHING like your Zircon. Very erratic readings for all objects… studs, metal and electrical. I’m hoping it’s operator error so at some point I’ll make a mock wall to do some testing, but so far my Zircon is a failure.
Awesome video - thank you!
This video was just what I was looking for. Thanks so much.
Right On! 🙌Thanks!
If you can't find a stud after this video, you may wanna give up construction and become a nurse 😂....this is phenomenal
thanks. I use a magnet, LED stud finder and Zircon, too. Now I need to figure out to avoid Live wire(powerline) around power outlet. I need to install Tesla charger in my garage but there is a power outlet right next to circuit breaker box.. I plan to install Tesla home charger right above power outlet. but I am afraid of cutting powerline around this. some youtuber suggests snake-type spycam but.. is this the best way ??
Right On! 🙌Thanks for watching! I think when in doubt to cut a small hole and look in the wall. Perhaps the electrical box you install for the car charger can cover the hole when finished? Or a junction box of sorts. Sometimes I’ve cut access holes and had to patch the drywall or cover with a blank plate. I’ve done this when I’ve had to get wires up a wall and into an attic. Hope this helps. Perhaps you have it installed already! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Thanks for demonstrating the many different methods for how to find those hidden studs and getting to the center of them. I think I'm smarter than a 5th grader now! LOL
U did well on your video. I never knew on the screw plates. Very informative. Thank u.
Right On! 🙌Thanks for watching Los! I appreciate the comment!!
This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much.
Easy to follow, well explained. Thanks!
For for second or two.. I was afraid you were gonna post my address 🤠👍 great information Mr. Jon! I have always used the knocking method. but really like the magnet idea you showed! Thanks!
Right On Vic! 👍💪 Yes sometimes you have to cross your fingers when you drive a screw into the wall! 🤞🤯😳 🌊
Great video. I’m putting up cabinets in my garage and I’m worried about hitting electrical wires. I’m going to get one of these stud finder’s that alert for electrical wires.
This video was extraordinary! Very helpful. I’m always paranoid even though I use some of these methods.
Right On! Thanks! 🙌✨
Thank you so much it's very helpful and educative
Really comprehensive video. I've done work in houses being framed, and have never seen any framer making the effort to route out a stud for a metal stud plate. They just slap everything together, correctly or not, knowing it will be covered up soon, and move on to the next job.
Seems to work for them. Just don't peek inside, because it could be scary.
I've never even seen them used to be honest and always assumed it was something that only old school carpenters did before my time.
Great sharing! I prefer the Franklin one. Thanks for sharing!
Right On! 👍👏 Thanks for watching! Yes, that Franklin Sensor one is awesome!!
Great info….How about a video about working with aluminum studs?
That’s a good idea!
Good stuff Bud!! I use the Hanson and the cheaper Zircon!! So far we've been pretty lucky!!☺
Right On Roadking! 👍 Yes, hanging things on the wall is part skill and part luck 🍀🤞🤣😂
That CH Hanson one is pretty good!
I learned a ton from this video. Thanks Jon
Great advice. Thankyou very much
Very practical tips and great video to watch.
Awesome advice very educational, certainly useful information
Thanks great lesson you taught 👍
Right On! 🙌 Thanks!
Great video. Helped me put my tv on my wall
Excellent video! Best I have seen on Tube! Very detailed! Thank you sir!! SUBSCRIBED!😊😊
Great Video i learned a lot, hopefully when i wall mount my TV it will go smoothly.
Right On! Thanks for watching!
Very helpful and easy to watch!!
Right On! 🙌Thanks Shannon!
Great Stuff, thanks for sharing!
Does the Franklin Sensors stud finder not rely on the screws? Does it actually detect the wood in the stud?
What do you do when you find electrical wiring?
Thank you very much for your tutorial and informative video watching in philippines..new subscriber
Right On! 🙌✨👏 Thanks for watching and subscribing!! Glad you liked the video!
Glad to see you Jon!
Right On Topper! 👍✨ I’ve been busy on some other jobs! I’ve had this one in the works for a while. I feel good getting a video out there! It’s been a minute 😃
If you mentioned all materials name & where to get it, that you use in your video - it’ll be a great help for anyone rookies like me to do DYI projects. Awesome video!!!
I removed the vanity light of my bathroom to install a new light as I was drilling on the wall I hit something hard and me not knowing(first time d.i.y) kept going and I believe I drilled through a metal plate. After watching your video now I know why they have metal plates in between walls, my question is how would I know if I did some damage to pipes, wires etc. So far no sign of damage to pipes or wires. TIA
thanks for such a great info
What do you do in new condos? I think it's all metal studs
Useful tips. Thanks
Right On Thanks!! 🙌✨☘️
great video, many thanks
Good info and a very useful video. Thanks
Right On Tony! 👍✨ How’s Jersey?
Weather is cool now but the rain from Ida left some towns in a mess.
Stud finders are great buy interestingly i checked the voltage on a nail i hammered in to the wood stud middle and found a couple of volts AC on it to ground so maybe damp wood carrying tiny current. i was double checking i hadnt hit a wire as well haha. My Stanley SF just shows ac voltage all over no matter where i put it but when i sweep it near a outlet it stays off till i get within 2 inches so is the insulation behind the wall got a/c on it a bit everyhwere?? Maybe change the circuit in the device to detect only above say above 30V where it can get dangerous
Voltage on a nail!! Crazy. 🤪✨✨✨
awesome video thanks!
Thanks for the lesson
Okay, now that I see how pipes and wires are RUN through the studs, I can put nails in without worry. I'm just hanging some picture frames but I'm using a hammer and some short, light duty nails so I don't need to drive a giant, long thing into the wood, and the nail plate should warn me if I'm on the wrong approach.
La pared tiene que tener algún revestimiento para que sirva la prueba
right on!
Im curius about the Walabot with insulated walls
Thank you!
Right On! 🙌 I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I like the new song at the end
Good video, I learned a lot. I am still not confident to drill though, due to cables....?? How do I know exactly where they are? (I am putting up a tv bracket...)
Yes, I hear ya! It can be a gamble! Worst comes to worst you can always cut a small hole and reach your hand in and feel
For wires. Use your cell phone camera to take video in the wall.
@@RightOnJonCrane Thanks so much Jon! I can totally do that. The bracket will cover the hole anyway. Brilliant!!! Thanks again!!
@@DougieL Right On! 👍✨🙌
Yes it's the best video on stud finders. Thanks a lot!
In my experience the nail plates aren't very good at resisting screws. Something to ponder.
How about finding studs behind shower tile?
I was drilling into the wall, and it went about an 1 and a half inches in and it stopped and wouldn’t go any further. I was afraid that I hit a metal plate with wiring, but now I’m not sure since it went in further than the metal plate that you showed which protects the wires. Now I’m confused lol
Hmmmm! 🤔 Could be a nail? Sometimes walls and wires are such a mystery!?! When in doubt cut a small hole. Better safe than sorry.
@@RightOnJonCrane so I drilled anyway after I discovered I was using the wrong type of drill bit. It was harder to get through, but it eventually did and worked fine, now I have a solid pull-up bar. Thanks so much for your help and tips! Couldn’t have done it without this video
@@michaelyoseph6179 Right On Michael!! That’s great! Thanks for letting me know. It nice to hear that the video is helpful!! Good for you with the pull up bar!! I have one I need to put up!! I’ve been getting my push-ups in every day!
@@RightOnJonCrane Thanks so much, Jon! And I'm sure hanging your pull up bar will be a piece of cake for you. :) Take care!
I'm surprised that you didn't show the newest one that uses your cell pnone and is called the walabot, haven't used one but if it does what is demostrated seems foolproof with wires, tubes, tubes. And when are you going to show the progress on the Airstream rebuild ? And what became of your pizza shop ?
All my questions.. thanks Matt!
Yes the Walabot seems like a video unto itself. What I covered here was the methods I’ve been using for years and I know them well. I think the Walabot would be a great video. As for the Airstream and the pizza shop, they are still in the works! I had to tackle a few other jobs in the shop that needed to be done fast and I could not film them. I’ll be bringing airstream and pizza content soon! Thanks for watching 👍✨
My problem was when they build my house the electrician didn't anchor the wire down. It wrapped around the 2 x 4. I was putting chair rail up and put the nail right through the wire. How lucky could I have been.
I tell ya it’s scary sometimes what is going on with the wiring! ☘️
One thing that is almost never talked about is how do to find studs in a plaster wall that has metal lath its a nightmare !
So true! That is a nightmare! Almost have to use one of those flexible cameras and look in the wall!
I long for the day when studs arent necessary for hanging things.
Thanks for the video Jon. Jon, can you give us a trailer update?
Hi Vincent! Yes I’ll have a video out soon sorry for delay. I’ve had some other jobs that I had to get to. More Airstream action soon!
Tried them all one time or another...BTW what happened to the trailer next video...i'm jonesen over here !!!
also I don't get alerts on your videos ...why ??
Right Chuck!! 😵💫 I had to work on a couple other jobs that I did not have time to film. I’ll be back on the Airstream soon and the pizza shop! I’m jonesing myself to get those videos up as well!!
thxs for sharing..how's mommy cat and family, any pizza made yet
Tom she is doing great! Her kittens are getting bigger than her!! 🙌✨😳
and a stipple ceiling?
I use a neodymium magnet from hard drives I've had to destroy
what? the magnets are picking up the screws you already put in the studs? not stud finding but screw fining.
I used your nail method and I hit a pvc pipe
Bottom line is it’s always a risk no matter what.
Has anyone ever told you that you kind of sound like Jay Leno?
Oh no! Not Jay Leno!! 🤮🤢
