Frames and matting make all the difference!!! Years ago I was the accessory buyer for a large furniture store (my budget was several million dollars in the 1980s). Representatives from companies selling me wholesale artwork would offer me the same pictures which was often a high quality poster. The difference and pricing was based on the quality of the frames and matting. I now do exactly what you are suggesting. I look for art i like and frames i like and don’t worry if they come together as one piece. I know I can mix and match. I also purchase old books at thrift stores with art and cut out what I like. I have found gorgeous watercolors of birds printed on nice paper and interesting maps. I realize this is only ok if I am doing this for my own pleasure and not resale.
I teach Spanish, and I had a large piece of Mexican folkloric art with a broken frame. My local frame shop wanted $150-300 to frame it with glass! A trip to a local thrift shop revealed a $6 frame of a print with a very faded pair of hunting dogs. The clerk was quite surprised that I was interested in it at all! Now, the art is displayed and is protected behind glass. It looks like a professionally mounted art piece! And NOBODY misses the old hunting picture!!!!
I needed a large frame and didnt want to spend 75 dollars so i got a 10 dollar thrift frame, popped out the ugly pic, spray painted the gold frame black satin, and painted over the pink mat with white flat wall paint I had. Looks great and real wood and glass, not plastic.
I found a beautiful set of lamps, they're from the 50s. A dark Teal color, trimmed with gold. I saw a set on Etsy and they were quite pricey so when I saw these thrifting, I had to go back & purchase them. They were so dirty it was hard to tell what they were but I realized what they were!! Once I got them home, I cleaned them and they were in PERFECT condition, as if the dirt/smoke had preserved them. Had to replace cords & shades though but they are absolutely gorgeous!!! ❤
That's awesome! Honestly lamps are my favorite thing hahah so I would have done the same thing! Replacing the shades and cords is so easy so I always buy broken ones and fix them up! 😊
Thanks for this great advice. When you mentioned using your glasses to drink sparkling water, I grew up knowing that as romancing the ordinary . Do you ever go to auctions or estate sales? I find them to be so stressful. The bud vase behind you on the table is beautiful.
That’s exactly what it is! I’ll have to remember “romancing the ordinary.” And I love estate sales! I used to go to so many when I lived in LA, I even got to see Alex Trebek’s house! But truly they are so stressful. I should go to some out here soon and see what they’re like. Also, I am going to my first mid century auction on the 26th! I’ll post a video about it if its any good :)
Beautiful practical ideas! Im a renter so very useful! I like the idea of using cocktail glasses for sparkling water (with maybe a squeeze of lime 😁) and sitting on your patio listening to the breeze! Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed and every moment is special! Thank you! 😘💖
The thrift stores in the US look amazing. In the UK they’re generally tiny little charity shops (we don’t say “thrift stores”) with all the stuff crowded into a small area. And most only have clothes, jewellery, small ornaments, books etc.
I watch a lot of British shows on RUclips and I'm always envious of the wonderful antique items found in charity shops as opposed to US thrift stores that have lots of newish items and very little antique. I love my US thrift finds, I just wish I could find more vintage/antique.
I just discovered your channel and I'm already in love! I really enjoy your personality that comes through so beautifully. Plus your hacks are genius and I know that I'll be using lots of them to decorate my home because I LOVE thrifting and doing something beautiful for cheap. I know I don't have to spend tons of money to have a beautiful home. Thank you!
🥹🥹this is such a sweet comment thank you so much!! I'm so happy to be finding my people who love to thrift and and make a beautiful home for cheap! I am determined to make things look high end without spending $$$ hahah so glad we could connect!

Thank you so much for this !!! Great points on the glass; I snap up colored ones because they ARE so hard to find. And frames; I'm switching out my plain frames for ones that have more interest and are fun. I've actually found many of them in 'Free Piles' around my neighborhood !!! I'm a new subscriber to your channel and living what you do !!! 😅❤❤
Yes - I like this series, already watched Part II. I agree about the frames, why buy new ones when the thrifted ones are so much more interesting. You have such wonderful tips from your experience as thrifter!
Not to sound too fan girling but also yes very much fan girling🤭 I’m so thrilled I found you here! I’ve heard that! I think someone needs to open a US version of the thrift store over there!
Canada has warehouses full of gorgeous stuff

Where do you find second hand furniture in the UK then ?

awe thanks!! so happy to have you:)
@@livingwithlk you like exactly the same stuff I do. Just spent most of today thrifting. 😁. Anyway, hugs from 🇨🇦
Great advice ❤
Patina isn't always a sign of old. Patinas are often faked by rubbing items with dirt, sanding, using chemicals and paints, etc...
Very true!
