Another free wall art would be to hang unexpected things you already own. For me i found an old coin my grandfather brought back from Europe. It had been sitting in a drawer for years but i never wanted to part with it so i framed it and hung it on my gallery wall (found an old tiny frame from goodwill). Did the same with a pretty old brooch i had. Didnt want to part eith it so it found a new home as a sentimental and unexpected art piece.
Honestly the advice on removing and cleaning off the old paint on door hardware is so astute. Never underestimate how some good cleaning and reconditioning can make a anything look better.
My doors are covered in a kind of plastic, and i have so many, i am not going to paint them. I clean them thoroughly once a year and little spots when it is needed. When it is damaged, i used tipe ex. The damages are small. It would not work when they are big i think.
You might appreciate this! I’ve been wanting to paint the arch that separates our little dine-in nook from the rest of our kitchen basically since we moved into our place 3 summers ago - I already have all of the supplies needed to do it but I’ve just been putting it off for whatever reason…until today! Felt motivated at your suggestion, so I finally took an hour this afternoon to do the darn thing and I’m so glad I did! Thanks! Lol
While I was house sitting for my mom last week my sister came over and decided to deep clean her bathroom and the door to the garage (idk why). This week my mom called us up “Did someone clean the door??” She was very confused but said it looks amazing now 😂 So yeah, the little things really can help.
Oh my gosh! I painted my interior doirs last week. I was tired of seeing the fingerprints on them. Painted them a gorgeous warm green color. Frames too. I could not believe how much i loved it! There's actually paint that's specifically for doors and trim. It's not supposed to chip.
I cannot tell you how grateful I am that your video just found me!! 😍😂 My husband and I always do improvements on our own dime and we love to go to the thrift stores and restore but we haven't for a long time. We've done so many other things but never addressed the five doors in a cluster not a hallway LOL and they all have the shiny gold door knobs OMG guess who's on a mission now!!!?? 😂😂❤ Thank you I can't wait to make this change
I love your channel 😊 So when you mentioned taking the door handles with you if you move I thought oh shoot, so saving what I take off is important 😅 I would be that person who tosses the old one lol My house is 129 years old and some of the door handles are original painted by design porcelain . I would love to find more. Thanks for the tips!
This is exactly what I have been wanting to see as a first-time homeowner. So much is unrealistically expensive or just doesn't look good when searching for this kind of project. Thank the algorithms I've found you!
I’m a tenant in a private rental (in England) This is just the kind of channel I love. You have some very good ideas. Thank you. I have subscribed and look forward to many more of your videos. 😊
Yes, paint your doors. We painted bathroom door and it brightened the whole room. And if you'll pick colour you really love, it is so nice to look at it all the time
First time viewer. Not a renter but your ideas translate well and are affordable. I’ve always loved under cabinet curtains and would like an opportunity to use them.
Don't paint brick. It seals in the moisture which will cause it to deteriorate. You can use lime wash, German schmeer, or stain made for brick. Talk to a mason first.
I made some improvements to my first rental... with the permission of the landlord; he was completely impressed with my work and the new look and rewarded me by raising my rent... insisting that I had raised the value. 😮
@jojokeane The valuable lessons we learn are worthy of sharing, don't put money or time into a property that is someone else's. We didn't change it back, and we did move.
Thanks for mentioning the curtains, I've wondered whether I should do this in some odd spaces where I can't put actual cupboard doors or whether it would tacky. Your comments have inspired me!
Thank you for "non peel and stick" refresh ideas, i was subscribed but had not actually watched one of your presentations until today -- very good, helpful related visuals.
I'm so glad the diy fairy sent you my way. My house is 100 years old. Your idea of changing the knobs sounds great. I want antiques and having different ones is brilliant. Thank you.😊❤
I wish we could do half of this stuff to our rentals in Australia! Blows my mind how much you are allowed to do over there. We can’t even hang a picture or put a plant in the ground without getting approval which takes weeks every time 😂
@livingwithlk it is part of our rental rules in Australia, basically you can remove weeds and some will allow sticky hooks without permission but any minor alterations (screws, new plants, etc) require approval which is done in writing to your landlord. Then inspections are done every 3 months and obviously if they came in and new pictures were up or you had used say the sticky tiles on your kitchen then you would likely fail the inspection etc. renting in Australia definitely is tough but sometimes you might get a reaaaaally good landlord that would approve most things but unlikely to allow changes to paint or flooring etc.
@mirandadeerose I can’t believe that’s the law. That’s wild. We have a lot of renters rights in California. We don’t have to approve inspections or visits from a landlord unless it’s extenuating circumstances, which it never is… Even if my lease says no nails in the wall or paint, our rights say that as long as we restore the home back to the way we found it before we move out we’re good. But of course you can get a horrendous landlord who tries to push you out - it just sucks you never know who you’ll get so I try to interview the property management people extensively before signing a lease.
I'm a landlord in Australia. I have amazing tenants and I love it when they take on projects. I often pay costs. Only one I have turned down was painting brick. PS Not making lots of money from them btw.

Just discovered your channel!! I have seen 2 so far and know that it is a keeper!! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience thoughts and suggestions! I have had to live with how to make our spaces cozy and eye pleasing as well and I Love doing it! Once again thank you 😊
Excellent video, thanks! I’d love to see any suggestions you might have for Ugly old kitchens. My rental has a weird setup with upper, but not lower, cabinets on one wall, so I used cube shelving units turned on their side as lower cabinets, for a coffee bar & storage. Oh and I like your layered haircut - flattering! 🇨🇦
My husband moved into a new office place and we paintes the walls the same white but I took an hour and cleaned the door from old grime, old paint, our new paint etc. and it made such a difference! I love your advice, they are great, we are thinking if changing out our old doors and painting afterwards so you gave me some real good food for though.
Think about purchasing a hisense air conditioner, it can go into any window. We own and don't have central air either. We have two units, one for upstairs and one for downstairs and they keep our house pretty cool. Also, open your windows when it is still dark if it is cooler outside, we do this for about an hour before it starts to warm and it helps a lot. Black out window coverings also help with heat during the summer, get white ones though. We do use black sided black out during the winter and they attract the heat and do warm the room. I've never seen the track curtains over a closet style space. This would help add a closet to a room that doesn't have one, which where we live isn't considered a bedroom without it.
thanks so much! we actually have two as well and do these same things! unfortunately for filming i have to open all the blinds and turn off all the ACs so you guys can see and hear me 😂
Boil your-painted over door or cabinet hardware in simmering vinegar and the oil paint will pop right off. Then you can polish old brass hardware and spray with a clear lacquer or Krylon clear satin spray paint so it does tarnish quickly.

Lots of ideas and options. Cleaning space alone can make such a difference. Repainting doors and trims is a big uplift. I have always stuck with brass door handles, even if they are “office knobs,” because brass does not harbour bacteria….one of its most wonderful attributes. I am not a fan of getting slap happy with paint. I paint to refresh and to get as much light as possible into my living space. Other than that I used wall decor that can be hung to create focal points and colour. When I move, or want a change, I just take it off a hook and the space remains neutral. Seconding washing the doors! When I lived with roommates, I washed my white bedroom door. The door definitely needed a new stroke of paint and had some nasty handles, but the washing still made a lot of difference :)
Just went around my apartment and cleaned the doors recently. I have two toddlers, whose little hands mark up a lot of the white spaces in our home. It's amazing how unnoticed those areas become, until you start scrubbing them down and they turn white again haha!

Hey LK, love your videos so much! You clearly have so much knowledge and experience with DIY home upgrades, but I'm wondering--did you have any trouble when you were first learning/have you had any disasters? I'm pretty new to these things, and I feel like I'm always making mistakes, which is especially stressful in a rental! Would love to hear you talk about how you can learn these skills without messing things up too much in the process 😂 More specifically, do you have any experience with plaster walls? They are super common where I live in Pittsburgh, PA and are so tricky to hang things on! I am grateful for all of the beautiful old homes we have in my city though 🙂
Yes! I have almost always had plaster or concrete walls out here in CA. The trick is to pre-drill a hole and then to screw in a medium sized screw. And for heavy stuff to pre-drill a BIG hole and put in a wall anchor, then a screw. I think I just learn from trial and error and screwing things up all the time haha I've been doing it for years. I am not sure I have any recent examples as I haven't tried anything super new recently.. However.. I did just regrout my bathtub for the first time and shared some learnings there! Oh and also I mentioned in my bathroom makeover that I learned the hard way about using the right paint and brushes. I learn the most from room makeovers when I am challenged with new things!
Another free wall art would be to hang unexpected things you already own. For me i found an old coin my grandfather brought back from Europe.
There’s a reason landlords may not allow certain decor…but even in my own home, real estate agents have been in agreement on the neural use of paint.

I'm pretty new to these things, and I feel like I'm always making mistakes, which is especially stressful in a rental! Would love to hear you talk about how you can learn these skills without messing things up too much in the process 😂
More specifically, do you have any experience with plaster walls?
@@livingwithlk Ah thanks so much for the tips and the encouragement! I guess experience truly is the best teacher 🙂
