  • Its time to remount the modified stock XJ bumper now that the rear tube fenders and corrosion protection are finished. I removed the rear bumper to while cleaning back the old undercoat to reapply the new stuff. While it was off I decided to strip it back and weld up some of the damage that its taken over the past three years. It also got a fresh coat of raptor liner paint.
    In this video I mount the bumper but whilst doing that I show how the rear Tie In Brackets work in the back of the frame rail alongside the rear frame stiffeners, tire carrier tow bar and bumper mounts.
    This main purpose of the tie in brackets are to replace the factory nut strip with something far more capable of taking the weight of a heavier bumper/tire carrier along with a larger aftermarket spare tire. Adding in a rear frame stiffener will also drastically help with this but you must stiffen the whole frame and not only the back.
    Thanks again for watching.

    I can listen to this man the whole day talking about modifying a xj. So much care in making every piece to fit. Good job man. This kind of build is perfect.

    I have been watching your videos for a few weeks now and that 'the pain' section of this one was priceless. Had me in stitches. Alan Partridge would be proud of that moment... Great honest channel. Really enjoying it.

      Thanks for watching and congratulations on starting the build! Thanks for the comments on the XJ, I've tried my best but there is still a lot more to do. I think that's a good thing though because I really enjoy working on it. I've taken it off the road now for some major work so hopefully you enjoy whats to come!

    I enjoy the videos and I appreciate the DIY fabrication. I feel like in order to truly own an XJ, I need to learn to weld. I love how you have taken weak points of the vehicle and make them 100% better. I was just looking at a friends drip rails where he mounted his Smitty roof rack and they are very bent and bowed.

      Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment. I think it really helps to weld or own a cheap welder to get jobs done. It costs so much to get things fabricated. It certainly takes a bit of time to get them toughened up but the are great vehicles to build on.

    maybe you could make one of those DIY 270 degree roof awnings before your next season too. most builds i've seen are around 200$. i just watched all your videos on this channel and subscribed. i follow you on your bushcraft channel but never found this one before and i was watching an overlandunderbudget video about his roof awning and tire carrier and one of your videos was suggested for me. he has a good roof awning that i'm gonna try to make once i can afford to get a welder :) anyway, glad i found this channel. i'm loving your jeep and learning a lot. thanks for sharing with us!

      There is a video on building the brackets and some parts of the bumper. It's way back in the play list. I'm on my mobile so i can't copy and paste a link unfortunately. I can do it on the computer when I'm home.

    Real nice work! A bit off topic.. How do you like the KM3's vs the K02 you had earlier?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 года назад +2

      Thanks! I think traction wise in mud, clay and deep snow wether its wet or dry the performance is far better than the K02.
      I guess they just don't slick up in these conditions like the k02 did at times.
      On gravel and dry dirt roads they are also very good but they wear faster than the k02. I think that's the only negative I've noticed. Thanks for watching

      @@WorkshoptoWilderness Thanks Mike. I think i'll be going with the KM3, 33x10.5. Hope to keep some decent road manners with skinnier tires.

    I feel like at one point you were scared of failing DOT(department of transportation) weight specs. There is a lot of added weight since then, are you still worried?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 года назад +2

      Weight is always in the back of my mind and there is room for improvement on this thing. When I first imported it to Sweden it got weighed and it was 100kg off of gvm. When weighed it had the roof rack on, front and rear bumper as seen today (no winch), front bumper bull bar, 32x11.50r15s on steels, drawer system in the back with battery, tire carrier with 32" spare, Full frame stifferners front to back and obviously the suspension and steering you see on it today.
      They said i could only carry one passenger because it was too heavy.
      So I set about lightening it up for the inspection, I dropped the drawer system and all its associated gear, took off the bull bar as it did nothing, took off the tire carrier and spare, swapped the 32x11.50r15s with stock tires and wheels that I have spare. I got it down to 1790kg and they allowed 4 passengers more. They said they don't weigh cars after this stage again and i could put everything back on it. But saying that if they 'suspect' its too heavy they will weigh it again at the annual inspection which is why I take the tire carrier off and put the stock tires back on every year.
