Over the years, I've cooked and entertained a lot. Family meals, again, at home, from scratch. Well, I'm in my late 70's, rarely entertain, but still cook😊. I stored large appliances, entertaining items in our basement and on shelves in the pantry. Now, I'm sorting, decluttering. Life has changed for me, things are going, offered to family who now have taken the entertaining lead. I'm happy to part with things, donate what isn't wanted.
Your one cupboard/drawer at a time decluttering method is music to my ears. It makes the process much more stress-free (nothing worse than tackling too much and then not having the energy to sort it). With my home decluttering I still have a mountain to climb (metaphorically & literally!)....you've reminded me I have 8 x 40 litre plastic crates of dishes/chinaware/glassware stored in the cellar that I have never used! One box at a time I hear you say :)
I put my knives in a drawer and threw out the big wooden block. Just as easy and less to dust. I put away my toaster but I need to put a pan under it now to catch crumbs. Always tweaking the process. Great videos! 😊
@LuluMacaroni I did that with our toaster too! I got tired of coming behind and cleaning crumbs from someone else's use, so I began thinking in terms of "follow-up" proofing! I got a cute, long Walmart glazed ceramic tray, a duplicate of one I had on a counter across from the kitchen for keeping a sugar bin and dog treats out on... used daily. The toaster fit lengthwise, in the same position I already had it, with extra length, and that left room on one end to catch crumbs ! I'd sure like to see a video on cleaning up after others: "how to keep a clean place when you live with someone who isn't " 🤨😆 !
Taryn, you have gently described so much-needed comments that helped me almost gently yell at my house of men who think the counters are additions to their offices, extra food supplies and new parts of eye, ear, paper, medicine, and giant food bags filled with ice holders. I used to cook daily, but have no urge to undo the counter, put what from the sink they think are where to put dirty dishes that should go into the dishwasher which is one second away, and by the time I start cooking, I am already tired, age 72 surviving a huge stroke, lymphodema, blood clots and no one helps unless I call through their cellphones. Welcome to Thanksgiving, dear Taryn and your well stated comments calm me each time you list a new well said explanation!
We used to store a lot of stuff in our basement. As we have aged and I have developed arthritis, going up and down the steps that the basement has become difficult. We have 4 bedrooms, one is my office (I work from home) and our daughter’s bedroom (she moved half-way across the country, is now our storage spot.
I'm glad I was open-minded enough to try decluttering my kitchen because it was easy to be comfortable with having more dishes and gadgets and other things than we needed.
Clutter does indeed increase stress levels. Not panic attack levels but more like perpetual background noise you stop noticing but continues to shred your subconscious.
Oh I so agree with you as far as kitchen space. I have close girlfriends that have extremely cluttered kitchens and the effect it has on them mentally and physically is really awful. They don't cook because they really honestly isn't space for it. So they buy prepared foods and take out foods and that's what they live off from. And it really isn't because they can't cook. Because again they're great Cooks but.... Yep! Huge impact to have a kitchen that you love. That's comfortable to make meals in. 😊
Sunny and cloudy lights were beautiful in fact :) All your points are so valid and lot of are guilty of all those most of the times.. In your earlier videos I actually was worried about your slightly bent dish rack shelf :) Good to hear that you have decluttered the heavy stuff ..
I was thinking of buying another muffin tin, but realized that I could use the little silicone cups and just put them on a tray when needing additional while baking. I works great! I do line the silicone molds with cupcake papers just like when I use the muffin tin
I got rid of my muffin tins and use silicone on a stone all the time now. The silicone cups takes up so much less space and work great! I’m not going back 😊. I love finding these little hacks that reduce my inventory. Thanks for the great videos
Good suggestions. I recently pared down my dishes and storage containers too and it's great to have everything fit in the cabinet. My husband refuses to get rid of his "special" plate even though it doesn't match the others and his favorite lunch containers so I have to keep those. I don't have a lot of gadgets but I do use my Ninja Foodi 3 or 4 times a week so there's no way I'm going to put it away and haul it out every time I use it. It lives tucked back in the corner and while it does take up some real estate I feel it's worth it. Same with the toaster and coffee maker. I do store once-a-year items and special pots and pans in my utility room. I can't get up and down the basement stairs well so that's right out. We just have to do what works for us. I do need some inspiration and ideas for my daily use pots and pans under the stovetop though. It's always a jumbled mess.
It is so hard to keep the kitchen free of clutter. As you said, dishes sort of magically appear. We moved into my grandma’s old apartment and sort of kept all of her kitchen items. I got lots of stuff passed down from my parents and my other grandma. I never bought a single dish nor any piece of cutlery. 😂 I definitely need to get rid of some things. Thank you so much for the inspiration. 🥰🙏🏻
For sure. I have an opened concept and minimal on the countertop is a must. I only have 3 appliances on it. One counter has the toaster, the other counter has two coffee makers. Keurig and nespresso. I need both 😳
@ 😂 I wish it was an interesting one! But nope🤣 i love coffee, thus the nespresso machine, I also love chai tea at night and hot chocolate around Christmas time, thus the Keurig. I use both everyday ☕️ 😄
My husband and I are 2 people. I got rid of most of my dishes. and that gave me room to store things we use a lot, like a toaster. That was how I kept the clutter on the counters at bay.
I think the kitchen is probably one of the easiest rooms to get cluttered. For me it’s a work in progress but I’m getting there. I’m trying not to store as much on my counters. One of the first things I decluttered was my mug stand. It’s just as easy to open a cupboard and take out a mug. If you really put some thought into it you can make big differences. I’m also doing the one drawer at a time. It’s not at all overwhelming and can be done in ten minutes or less.🥰
I have a cardboard box in a quiet corner of my house. Whenever I come across something, especially in the kitchen that I do not want anymore. It goes right into that box. I never take anything out of that box and when it is full, it goes to Goodwill. It has worked beautifully. Because instead of just throwing something back in the drawer, I instantly take it to the box. I still need to sit down and do a drawer by drawer shelf by shelf decluttering but at least for now some things are disappearing one by one.
ty Taryn Bringing more pots -downstairs shelves, every 2 weeks get rid of 1 or 2 items, kids do Not want them-now the hard part lol cleaning out the bathrooms 2drawers- been holding it off
Thanks Taryn, you’re spot on! My countertop is the bane of my existence! Too much stuff 😫It’s definitely on my hit list for this month 😅 So true about gadgets, oh my goodness! Time for a cull for sure.
Great tips. I don’t have a basement but I have totes in garage with items I don’t use often. One is my baking tote, at the moment I don’t do a lot of baking but I’m retiring in a couple of months and intend to do lots more on e free of work. I also have a BBQ/party/Christmas tote, it’s out a lot in summer but not in winter. I keep a small amount of dishes in the house and the rest are in BBQ/party etc tote - it helps so much. My office is next, I have some crafting stuff that I haven’t used in a couple of years but I’m not sure how I’m going to feel when I retire, so going to put into a tote, maybe two 😂 and once I retire I will give myself 6 months, if I haven’t touched it then it’s leaving. I managed sometime ago to get rid of excess clothes, I did a winter/summer tote, I have noticed that there’s stuff I have still never worn, that’s okay, I’m likely to get rid of some of my work wear but just need to see what I will wear when I’m more house based, then I will get rid of anything I still don’t wear. It’s amazing how we still orient to our fav 25%, we really don’t need as many clothes as we think. I’m definitely the type of person who wears things out but I also know I have a tendency to buy two of something once I love it 😂
Since I declutterred my kitchen worktops it's been easier to keep on top off, although I'm looking at putting a shelf up to get rid of a few more things that are on my counter but I use them daily or several times a day.
Great video & tips. I don’t cook from scratch, so the only time they get untidy is when I’ve been shopping. I try to put it all away soon after getting home but that doesn’t always work, as I’m tired from pushing my heavy trolley & need to rest for a while. (I don’t drive) I can never work out why some people leave spaghetti canisters & cereal boxes on their worktops, why not just them in a cupboard. Someone I heard of last week owns 4 air friers! The Minimalist Mum (Mom) suggests having a time to tell box for stuff that you’re not too sure if you want to keep or not. When it suddenly went I thought it was a power cut. Are you on instagram?
Thank you so much! Also, I'm not on Instagram yet - have been thinking of getting an account sometime though!

Smoothies are daily event, so blender is out, spice tray also, used daily. Vitamin s are grouped in a container. very small vitchen but efficient. Others I know have small kirchens (retiremetn community. I keep my instant pot in the garage and use it on the patio. Microwave on opposite counter.
I fill our seven day pill holders every week then put them in the cabinet on top of our coffee mugs. Every morning, whoever starts the coffee maker (set up the night before) pulls the two mugs and two pill cases out onto the counter. Believe me,we never miss a day!🙌🏻 I also keep our meds and supplements in two different, large, ziplock bags inside the cabinet. It started as an easy way to take it all if we had to evacuate, but it also really helps when I fill them each week. I dump my husband’s bag on the counter ,then put each bottle back in the bag as I fill the seven day case, same with mine. The result is no forgetting or double loading!🙌🏻
Most people in UK outside the rich would give their second best kidney for a kitchen half the size with half the storage space of your kitchen. I have had a kitchen that I could stand in the middle of and touch all four walls. That forces a drastic consideration of what is necessary or not.
Another great video. I love your videos, because not only are they very good advice, but quick, and straight to the point. I’m not a clutter kind to person, but I’m not happy with the stuff on my counter. There’s a much needed tissue box, a wooden lazy suzan with some every day meds for my son, who has memory issues, so its easy for him, a toaster which gets used every day, my Bunn coffee maker, ( which I love,) and gets used every day, and a small k cup coffee maker, which only gets used occasionally. Anyway, you get what I’m saying. Snd I really don’t have a lot if cupboards, but I think if I clean some of them out, which I have in the past, I could cut down. Thanks, Taryn.🤗
I am very short, but I have some tall cabinets. So I put all the stuff I barely ever use on the top shelf. Get it out of my way for 99% of the time when I’m not using it.
At 9:33,you made a gesture indicating, “Can you believe I have two of the exact same pan?!” Hopefully you and younger people realize that the set is for making a double layer cake.🤭🤣😅😂
I just bought a thing that makes ice cream out of a solid frozen block. I do have a 1200 w Bullet and a powerful food processor. I don’t know how they convinced me but it looks like a game-changer. I won’t have to freeze my ice cream “batter” into small ice cubes now 😅 I don’t know how that’s gonna be different compared to still having to freze it in a large container, but it was the selling point. How do I stop being like this 😂
I've got a tiny counter space, so the amount of items / is naturally limited. It's a kettle (I love my tea and a ton with tea bags). Everything else lives a short life while preparing food and than goes. Unfortunately there's an exception when I'm lazy and don't tidy up after cooking. I work on that issue.
Went carnivore and my utensils are an air fryer and a pressure cooker. Also silver cutlery for elegance. Edit. Only use Corell dishes. Got rid of heavy stoneware. Use the lightweight white Corell.
My single-use gadget I won't get rid of is my Apple slicer/corer. We go to the orchard every year and are growing 1 pear and 2 apple trees. We make a lot of apple stuff, and it's great for my younger kids to use.
I have the air fryer on the counter because it's used multiple times a day. I have a tray with oils and salt and pepper on it. Then there's a silicone mat for a drainboard. That's it on the counters. The knives are out but on a magnetic bar on the wall.
I'd love to have my counters cleared off. Unfortunately, this older home has shelves in the lower cabinets which come all the way to the front - so no place to put appliances, also limited cabinets. We have a pantry but it is flat, so it's small, again no room for those items.
If you can remove the upper shelf (as in not built in place), have someone rip the backside of the shelf. You might need some holes drilled to support the less deep width, but you can pick up shelf supports at any hardware store.
@susansweat9125 I f appliance height is the issue, could you store them separately? I have the pitcher of my blender beside the base instead of on it. I turn the top of my food processor upside down and place it in the bowl so the whole thing isn’t so tall.
My bottom cabinets have a full shelf too. I put laundry baskets or strong boxes on some shelves to act as pull-outs, so I can get to things in the back. Big sheet pans serve the same function. Drawers would be my first preference, but full depth shelves are far better than those half depth ones I had in my previous house.
A set of GOOD knives are you half way there. The KenMaid mixer with gadgets will all you need and as set of dishes. All other things store in the basement. Here’s another idea. Take everything in the utensil drawer and empty it into a box. Clean the drawer and as you use utensils over a week, allow them a place in the drawer. After a week, put the rest of the utensils away. You’ll find that you use very few utensils apart from your good knives!
It's crazy how the kitchen seems to accumulate the most random things. I used to own an insane amount of Tupperware. Cake and pie takers that were rarely used and enough bowls to sink a ship. It feels so much better to just keep the things I use on a regular basis.
I put most of my baking dishes in the basement. Our kitchen is fairly small, so anything that I don't use at least every couple of weeks either lives in the basement or went bye bye.
Organizations that help refugees can use dishes, cookware, utensils, gadgets, anything in good condition that you would like to donate. Same with clothing, by the way.
Omg. We have enough dessert plates for 5 families!! Eek! They were presents from my parents and one extra set my husband bought. Toooo much. Very nice different styles, etc. etc. Then the small sets of very good quality dishes. SMH. Kid in a candy store style is how we ended up with even more. And no they won’t be sold by us. Thrift store is the only option, I guess. No more purchasing by us. So done.

I live in Florida, and there are no basements! If I had one, things would be a lot less cluttered.

I did the same with knives. There are wooden knife holders for drawers which work well.
Thank you!!
Before I put my toaster away in the cabinet, I tip it over the sink, and tap tap tap the crumbs out. Takes a few seconds.
@LuluMacaroni I did that with our toaster too! I got tired of coming behind and cleaning crumbs from someone else's use, so I began thinking in terms of "follow-up" proofing! I got a cute, long Walmart glazed ceramic tray, a duplicate of one I had on a counter across from the kitchen for keeping a sugar bin and dog treats out on... used daily. Great video, Taryn! I took a full weekend last summer to declutter the kitchen. I also went through one cabinet at a time to minimize the chaos.
Awesome, great job!!

Thank you for sharing!
put stuff in boxes take boxes to reclycle and enjoy your empty spaces ,,,
Have stackable glasses I bought years ago from IKEA.
I'm hosting Christmas this year. 18 people ... not enough dishes that match. 😮
Have one side not match the other side. Or, let it all be random. If it bothers someone, let it.
If it's in the budget , matching dishes from Dollar tree, they have heavy plates and chargers for last minute decor at a lower price
I’m hosting thanksgiving in a few days for 50-60 ppl. They are getting the finest china that disposable plates come in 😂
I'm sure people will be much more interested in the food than whether the dishes match! 😀
@barbarak2836 thank you for the + feedback
Went carnivore and my utensils are an air fryer and a pressure cooker. Also silver cutlery for elegance.
Edit. Only use Corell dishes. Got rid of heavy stoneware. Use the lightweight white Corell.
Thank you for sharing!
I also went carnivore. Two frying pans and a crockpot.
My single-use gadget I won't get rid of is my Apple slicer/corer. We go to the orchard every year and are growing 1 pear and 2 apple trees. We make a lot of apple stuff, and it's great for my younger kids to use.
Oh yeah - it sounds like your apple corer gets a ton of use! I have a tiny milk frother that I use every day so I know what you mean.
I have the air fryer on the counter because it's used multiple times a day. I have a tray with oils and salt and pepper on it. Then there's a silicone mat for a drainboard. That's it on the counters. The knives are out but on a magnetic bar on the wall.
Thank you for sharing, Gwen!
I have the same full depth shelves. We decided to use the closet by our kitchen to store larger appliances and serving pieces.
Yes! I love this idea!
There are so many kitchen gadgets that can be replaced by just using a knife.☺️
For sure!
It's crazy how the kitchen seems to accumulate the most random things. I used to own an insane amount of Tupperware. Cake and pie takers that were rarely used and enough bowls to sink a ship. It feels so much better to just keep the things I use on a regular basis.
Yes - so true!!
❤❤❤
Thank you!❤
I put most of my baking dishes in the basement. Our kitchen is fairly small, so anything that I don't use at least every couple of weeks either lives in the basement or went bye bye.
Thank you for sharing!
I think a lot of people collect kitchen gadgets just for the fun of it I used to be guilty
I know what you mean!
I use my toaster almost daily but I do not keep it on the counter
Same here.

So done.
I so get it, ha!

Thank you! ❤
I think clutter is more a symptom than a cause of stress & other health issues.
