  • I hope this review of the Impulse RC Apex EVO 5" Freestyle frame helps someone out there looking for their next frame. Besides my main complaints though, I do think this frame is quite high quality and seems to fly just fine so far. There's definitely far worse, but there's also better.

    The holes are supposed to be tight in the arms. It helps with resonance which this frame had been tested to have some of the best on the market. If you drill them out you will end up with resonance over time. Others have stated the reason for the hole not present in the top plate for the metal camera as it’s to give more options for different cameras to be used. This was basically designed for the O3 unit. If you watch Bardwells review of this frame a while back you will see the reason behind this. Hope this helps

      Thanks for the comment, this does help provide some insight! In my own testing, the Apex has indeed been excellent with resonance, even rivaling the AOS frames I've tried. My problem is more with the alignment and assembly process though, not the hole size. Tight screw holes are fine, but IRC needs to ensure that the alignment is still fine when they tighten up a hole tolerance. Besides my complaints with fit and assembly though, this frame has proven to be pretty solid. Its durable, has excellent resonance characteristics, and has a relatively large build area which aids in repairs.

      @@propabilityfpv most of the Impulse frames are like this which is by design. It always helps to not tighten anything down until the last possible minute. I agree it’s a great frame and I have ordered the parts to make my OG Apex into a Evo. The Reverb was my fav frame until the Apex arrived and before that it was the Alien which set a standard that has been copied so many times in this hobby. I’ve heard good things about the AOS frames but yet to try one

    I have built many apex frames. 5-6". I always add a center hole that passes through the bottom plate, the key, and top plate with a press nut on top. Keeps my arms from coming loose and got better blackbox. Keeps the bottom plate from bowing out during impact. PIA, yes but love all the arm size options.

    Interesting review. I appreciate the honesty. I will probably stick with my trusty RDQ TBS Source One frames for now. The price is unbeatable for what you get, and the frame press-nuts are installed from the factory! 😀
    Keep up the great work man!

      Reasonable price AND the factory did what factories do? Wow, it’s almost like that’s how it should be! Ask me if I get worked up about this stuff 🤣 thanks for watching man!

    this quad is my first frame since getting into the hobby, its still my first frame, ive had 1 arm bend on me so far (not crack) but the carbon actually bending! but considering the amount of times i crashed it, im surprised it get slowly bent over time as opposed to it cracking!

    • @propabilityfpv
      @propabilityfpv  3 месяца назад +1

      Interesting that it bent! Mine never last long enough to bend. They’re either fine or snapped in half, no in between the way I fly 😂

    I've built several of these and have never ecountered the issues you've expressed here. They're great as a "bando basher", but to be honest, I much prefer the Quadmula Siren F5 Split over the Apex. It's a nicer build, better frame resonance and can take a larger lipo. Appreciate the comprehensive review, mate. 👍

      @propabilityfpv  Месяц назад +1

      I’ve now built two of them, same issues for both with varying degrees of severity. I think that says something about their QC if anything! I hear the siren f5 is great, I’d like to try one out at some point! Thanks for watching and commenting! 😃

    The second screw for the top plate is not needed. The reason why the camera plate has 4 holes is because instead of making different plates for right and left they can make universal one that just gets flipped around in different orientation. The top of right plate becomes bottom of left.

    • @propabilityfpv
      @propabilityfpv  4 месяца назад

      If they want to make it work for the left and right sides, they don't need 4 holes. Technically, they don't even need 3 holes if they really wanted to eliminate the most amount of hardware. They could just make two on the bottom, one on the top like it is, but make the TPU insert geometry such that it can be used on both sides. Adding the fourth hole is fine if they were to use it on the top plate, but as it stands right now its just added manufacturing cost for no discernable value add.
      If you like it that's great, you're certainly entitled to that opinion. I'm just providing another perspective on something I find to be a big issue in this hobby.

    Funny I see this video right now. Just put together my first Apex Evo frame this weekend and ran into the exact same problem you did. The holes through the arms just didn't line up properly and it took me a lot of fiddling to finally make it work. Indeed disappointing for a frame at this price point.
    Recently built a Volador II. Heavier, more complex to build but cheaper and really durable. Might stick with that one in the future.

    okay about the half hole on the arm hmmm so you want to change the motor bell and the hole does not go fully through, well you cant change it anyways if you use the skid / landing pads there is no hole so no matter what you need to take the motor off and most people will use the included skid pads and there made of pc plastic molded but everthing else you said i agree with.

    • @propabilityfpv
      @propabilityfpv  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment and the watch! That's just another miss on the design IMO. If they had just made the skids with a hole in them its no longer a problem. It just feels like they tried something new just to say they tried something new. But I don't think it really adds much value!

    I've built five of the Apex frames of various sizes and the downfall to them is the narrow rear and the fact that no matter how tight the arms fit they will start to get a wiggle after getting banged around to the point where I find myself constantly tightening them... I'm thinking it's time for the center key design to disappear into history

    • @propabilityfpv
      @propabilityfpv  4 месяца назад

      Interesting, that’s good to know! Yes, the center key business seems like more trouble than it’s worth. Along those lines- another thing that irritates the hell out of me that i forgot to mention, is the lack of access to your stack when the frame is fully assembled!

    i got 2 of these frames and they're ..fine. i do acknowledge your issues and IMPULSERC does complicate things for no reason/aesthetics (? ). as far as value it's a tough one. it flies good when you got all the top components and you built it well. but for a 1/3 of the price i got tbs source and after a blind test of showing some friends the 03 footage ... no one could really tell the difference.

    • @propabilityfpv
      @propabilityfpv  2 месяца назад

      ^Exactly my point! Frames have really become a popularity contest instead of a real competition between companies to make the best design. At the end of the day, it’s just a piece of carbon fiber that holds stuff so you can fly. I feel like that is lost on some companies when they try and add various new features. Thanks for the watch and comment 😊

    #1. $92.50 includes a replacement. So you get 2 frames for that price.that little warranty card you got with it?! Thats gold😉2. They couldnt put a second screw on the top plate it would directly conflict with the gopro/action 2 mount. Hilarious that you think they were just being lazy..😆 ... 3. The polycarbonate skids are exactly that...skids. .. 4. The antenna mount you just trim and customize it to fit what antenna you choose to use. . 5. They didnt go with through holes on the arms for added durability infact i made a video about that exact feature and praised it for i had 3 different frames break in that spot from hard crashes in fields. Ive been flying the apex since i got in the hobby 4 years ago and ive broke one arm . I try new frames that come out. I fly them and crash them. And they almost alway break in places i dont expect. I fix them and give them away. But. Who am i?!😂 i never do this but i just had to....sorry

    • @propabilityfpv
      @propabilityfpv  3 месяца назад +1

      You clearly have many opinions which is great, but I’d like to refute a few of your points.
      1. That’s good to know, I wasn’t aware of the warranty.
      2. So you’re saying it’s impossible to design a printed GoPro mount that has clearance for that screw? It’s easy, I do it all the time. They already went through the trouble of drilling 4 holes into the CNC metal piece, it’s clearly not a capability problem. Leaving a screw out causes confusion and looks unprofessional.
      3. Protectors can do all skids can do while also providing more arm protection. The arms in this frame are very well designed so that you can fit a protector on that actually protects AND doesn’t impact performance, they should have taken more advantage of it!
      4. I understand that, and that’s what I did if you listened. I’m saying that it’s not the best design. Just another thing I have to take the time to design and print on my own.
      5. I assume you’re talking about the center motor hole? I will argue that not drilling that hole thru has extremely minimal impact to durability, and that any impact it does have can be accounted for by including TPU arm protectors- see point 3.
      I appreciate the feedback, but I respectfully disagree with some of your comments. Also, to be clear: I DO like this frame for the most part. It just wouldn’t be honest to not call out the things I don’t like.
      The only way this hobby continues to grow is by making it more accessible to the common man. You shouldn’t have to modify things, design your own parts, and drill out clearance holes to build a professional consumer product.

      Three things:
      1. Send me a link to where it says that.
      2. Why am I filing down their parts to make them fit?
      3. This still doesn't address the issue of the holes not lining up because they are improperly sized.

      It’s not negative, it’s the truth. With a price point that high, these types of issues should not be occurring. The way we can make products better is by calling these things out so they get fixed in the next revision. This is my way of doing that. You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, but I don’t have to agree with it.
