    Liam and Phil, many thanks for yet another superb compilation. I have seen most of the content more than once before and am equally happy to watch them over and over. As well as your line/location knowledge, your addition of speed information has added a great deal to the already spectacular shots. My favourite sequence: the double-header at Elvanfoot, with many runners-up. Kind regards, Bob.

    • @williamkesler2373
      @williamkesler2373 4 года назад +1

      That’s because we have different requirements. Smooth track is not a requirement for 2-3 km long freights going at ~70kmh speed, which are the majority of American trains. But it’s absolutely essential for express passenger services going twice that fast such as you find in the U.K.

    Terrific panning at 11:00. As usual, the great quality we've come to expect from you. Australia has some preserved steam locos but UK almost certainly leads the globe. Terrific that many trains do not have diesel assistance in the rear.

    • @BackwardFinesse
      @BackwardFinesse 4 года назад +2

      Edmund Carew The diesel loco is not there to push usually (unless starting out from a stop up a steep hill, as at Swanage) but to provide electric power for modern carriages fitted with electric train heating.

    • @edmundcarew7235
      @edmundcarew7235 4 года назад

      @@BackwardFinesse I gather this has been exacerbated by West Coast Railways in the UK having its generator car being inoperable. I am told it would be an acceptable substitute on some heritage trains in lieu of a diesel at the rear.

Then in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, She did over a hundred and five MPH for most of the trip, and only slowed down when crossing the Mississippi river, and then into Chicago.It was the ride of a lifetime, My father was an Operating Engineer for Union Pacific, and I got to ride in both engines for several hours each. I remember as a boy hearing and seeing the engines pulling the trains up out of Sheffield Midland, through Heeley.
    The exhausts were some times more like a 'bang' as the power was on so much.
    The smoke and the sparks flying all around, and the pride we felt, if the driver, or fireman waved at us on the bridge. :)
    We could sometimes hear them shunting all night as they were making the trains up.

    How much power rating an electric heater should have so that the working pressure of most steam locomotives is developed within 10 minutes? If the tenders of steam locomotives had place for adding a big bank of batteries that could receive power from tender mounted solar modules......then the use of coal can be reduced greatly!

    What are the parameters, whereby a steam locomotive can handle an express train on it’s own, without the ‘assistance’ of a Diesel engine?

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM
      @MarshSteamVideosTM  5 лет назад +2

      Depends on the class of locomotive and what route it's on. Some destinations need diesel's on the back for turning purposes or to drag the train out of a terminus. Sometimes conditions play a part, like Autumn. Thankfully there's still quite a few trips that run without assistance, it's just knowing which one's !

      Dave, would you care to explain or advocate how you think my shots should be framed or executed. If you can find an alternative video of the same niche or content which you think is captured to a higher standard than mine and is free to view, I'd genuinely like to watch it. Some shots are panned some are not, its usually because the location does not allow for it etc or there are other photographers to the side of me or trees and lineside vegetation which masks the scene and not forgetting the embankments where the train goes out of sight, so for me its not worth panning. Go look again at the scene at 15.02 sec, there is no other scene on RUclips of a British steam train at 70mph framed perfectly an panned to perfection at speed. If there is post the link here ! Or maybe go and try and replicate what I do, to the way which you think it should be done. I'll wait.....

      If I may chip in - although excursions, many are running decent distances - these are not 5-mile preserved lines!

    Marsh Steam, I have posed this question numerous times to many enthusiasts without a reply. Pl let me know, whether the engine at slower speed acts as a brake on the other speeding engine? I think whenever two engines are coupled it is rare that both are exerting a driving torque for achieving equal speed. Conversely, does the speeding engine get slowed down by the other? Thanks in advance and for the great upload.

      Commemorating a military dictator.... I'd rather enjoy the Merchant Navy class, Clan Line, commemorating heroism and sacrifice rather than ambition and the quest for personal power.

    I'm lucky enough to live on the line just by Ashford Bowdler, Duchess of Sutherland came past last weekend and sitting in my car at Ludlow station today, heard the unmistakeable pheep of an A4, turned out to be Union of South Africa! It's a magic location that's for sure. Ace video.

    These magnificent engines and their shiny carriages are a delight to watch. The love, care, patience and expertise that has gone into their restoration is admirable. I do just wonder, however, how all that black smoke belching from the chimney is going to help us achieve zero carbon emissions.

    When steam is run right! Somehow American steam that still runs seems like it's weak and can't go fast, and needs 2 modern locos to back it up for a small passenger train. The Chinese had some bad ass steam not too many years ago actually doing work, with multiple engines pulling coal up and down mountains.

    At 17:41 it looks like the pendeleno (sorry if incorrect spelling) slows down so you could film the Union of South Africa.
