      The diesel loco at the rear is there for a couple of reasons. It provides electric carriage heating (steam heating from the loco was discontinued years ago) & it's other purpose is as a backup in case (perish the thought) the steam loco fails. There's *huge* financial penalties imposed on the steam special operators for delaying the scheduled services in the event of a breakdown.

      Most steam hauled charters are usually up to 10 to 12 coaches in the UK depending on the power class of the Loco that’s pulling the tour.
      A lot of the time a steam tour will have a diesel on the rear to generate power to heat the coaches, possibly assist the steam loco and be there in case the steam loco fails so it can replace it. A diesel can weigh up to an equivalent of at least two extra coaches.
      Sometimes on steam tours you can get 13 or 14 coaches. I think 14 is the maximum a steam loco can haul on the mainline ‘I could be wrong there’
      Sometimes I’ve seen steam locos such as 6233 Duchess of Sutherland hauling 14 coaches with a diesel on the rear giving no assistance which is the equivalent of about 16 coaches which is an impressive load indeed by UK standards :)
      Hope this helps :)

    But I have a stupid question
    Why are all these british whistles so high pitched?
    I'm from America & we don't usually have that many that sound like that

    • @RailView_YT
      @RailView_YT  4 года назад +1

      Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! :)
      That is a great question :)
      It could be because of the Victorians using high pitch whistles on Great Western engines first and the GWR and other railway companies around the time keeping pretty much kept the same design of whistle ‘known as a bell whistle because of the shape I think’
      There have been quite a lot of different types of whistles on UK steam locos throughout the years but all of them are smaller than American whistles. This is probably due to the size difference between locos in the UK and US with the US steam being bigger and having more boiler pressure due to the size.
      ‘I’m not 100% sure on all this I’m probably wrong haha’
      There are some low pitch whistles in the UK however known as Stanier hooters carried on most LMS locos :)
      Hope this helps :)

    I've always wondered what is it with rebuilt bullied West country's and battle of Britain's at speed on the mainline the whistle can't stay in one pitch its almost like it's premature doppler effect

    • @RailView_YT
      @RailView_YT  4 года назад +1

      I think a lot of the time on rebuilt Bulleid whistles Doppler effects are caused by an echo from subjects that they pass with the whistle being place sort of on the side of the loco. I noticed it a lot when Rebuilt Bulleids whistle :)

    6:45 how come Duchess of Sutherland has a yellow diagonal stripe on the cab side where the number is?

    • @RailView_YT
      @RailView_YT  4 года назад

      In the 1960s when the West Coast Mainline was electrified they banned steam from travelling under the wires fearing that they would damage them. Thankfully this ban doesn’t exist anymore. The yellow cab stripe was to signify that the loco was banned from travelling south of Crewe where at the time was electrified, this was applied to a lot of locomotives the 1960s.
      They applied this to the Duchess in 2017 to represent her look before she was withdrawn from BR service.
      Hope this helps :)
      Cameron

    • @yoville73
      @yoville73 3 года назад

      Oh yeah... I mean... I’m not sure why British Rail put those stripes on them... I mean there were some instances that the locomotives were shunting themselves at low speed at Crewe station underneath the electrical wires. Perhaps they just wanted steam off the top link express trains out of Euston as they’re days wound down.
