- Shane MacGowan, the singer-songwriter and frontman of “Celtic Punk” band The Pogues, best known for the Christmas ballad “Fairytale of New York,” died Thursday, his family said. He was 65.

He was my friend and like my big brother whenever he made it to west coast America since the late 90s. He was truly a beautiful person and felt nothing but genuine affection from his mere smile at you. Hard to explain but his eyes really looked. He really really cared if he said so. He was soo sweet and spirited you always wanted to stay awake no matter how tiring he could be. Because it was worth it. He always taught me something new. I don’t know really anyone I can say that about. Thought I prepared myself years ago for this. I was wrong. 5 days and still gutted when I hear his speaking voice. I wish I could sit and watch Once Upon a Time in America just Once more with him. He was extremely loving so it’s no surprise soo many people are showing their love back for him. Because he gave soo much love in spades. Don’t know where he got this scary drunken violent persona. He was absolutely the opposite. Miss you buddy

Such a sad loss. Was listening today, all day to the radio but when Ray Darcys mother who was a massive fan of him interviewed him 20 years ago, in her kitchen, was played on the show i couldn't but laught and cry at two most beautiful people in their element. They both loved their interaction with each other and then finished with fairytale of new york. RIP Shane

The first time I saw the Pogues was at a small club. I was totally unprepared for the experience. Shane was in rare form, snarling at the audience between songs. The band’s sheer energy was just unbelievable.

I'm interested in pleasing me and pleasing the people that are interested in me." Or maybe Bob Dylan, who said "What's money? It’s unbelievable what he has achieved over his lifetime. I used to buy records from him at Rock On records in Camden Town. Who would have thought he would become a legend.

I'm from Croatia, I came across his songs a long time ago and I immediately liked them, especially since I love that Irish melos, I followed his work from the first moment and always loved to listen to each of his songs. I didn't know he had died, and it hasn't even been a full month that I watched an online documentary about him and his life, which also featured Johny Deep, and it was interesting for me to get to know his life and work a little better. I am extremely sorry that he died, I believe that it is a huge loss for the world and for music, may he be eternally praised and thanked for everything he gave us.
