@thet1375 It is beautiful because even in a time of great grief his family were able to find a bit of joy on what is undoubtedly one of the hardest days they'll ever have to live through in Gods house and in music. Clearly none of the priests had any issues with it or else the music would not have been played. In my experience coming from a family of funeral directors, a character like Shane MacGowan was not meant for a drab funeral, but one full of madness and dancers just like he would have endorsed were he still with us. You can have your opinions of course, but to many that is considered the ideal way to be remembered. Love and light, that is what Catholicism is all about. All the best :)

I agree with you, it is a truly Irish tradition to celebrate someone’s life this way. It is a tradition that was opposed by Rome in the years following the famine, who then instructed the church leaders in Ireland to suppress it along with much of Irish tradition and culture, replacing it under the “devotional revolution”. It included suppressing Irish dancing, making it stiff and upright instead of its natural expression of joy. But thankfully we still have sean nós dancing, growing all the time, and Shane’s funeral showed our true Irish cultural traditions are still there to enjoy and show the world. The most important thing was a beautiful tribute to Shane, it honoured his great gift to the world. So why should anyone want to impugn that by imposing strictures purporting to be religious observance? @@holly-rosemckinneycondren

Sitting in Nenagh Church at Shane's funeral was am amazing feeling. It was SUBLIME. The music brought me to another level of being sung and played by the people who knew and understood him, and they even brought their music to another level in honouring this extraordinary man. Yes he had many faults but he was sincere with no airs and Grace's and HUMBLE. Wow what an extraordinary send off to a man.who loved and lived his Irish heritage. We should all take a page from his book - proud to be Irish especially now in these uncertain times. RIP Shane yoor legacy will live on.

I have been to a lot of churches and masses in different countries during my life but this is the very first time I have seen a rocking party at a funeral with dancing, shouts of yahoo and smiling people, The priest was going to get up at one time grab at guitar and start singing in to a mike, Good on you Shane you had that effect of people all of your like, you brought out the best in people, you made then jump, dance, sing, shout for joy, feel alive and you spread the love to all, God is now rewarding you for all the good you did al during your life, you were and are a shining example of good in this world, you did not know what you your bad members The Pogue's did for Irish people any millions of others all over the world, you gave then the courage to be themselves, and the Irish to be proud of their country and people and their history and their culture, So thanks A Million Shane & The Pogues for you gave and all that you did
