    Double dash coop can do WAAY MORE than you think:
    -You can do a super start if both players do a rocket start

      The bashing also has some great utility when driving. If your driver takes a turn a bit too narrow or wide, you can bash in the opposite direction to correct the course. You can also save the driver from falling off the track. Oh and if your driver is about to narrowly miss an item, which happens to the best of us, you can bash into the item to still pick it up.
      The back player in double dash really has a lot more to do than was said in this video.

    Double dash is definitely my favorite, always will be. I’d love an updated version, with all the additions of Mk8 with the double dash formula. I think that the co-op mode is best with a friend, as it really creates some focus on item usage and teamwork that other racing games don’t have. Fond memories of my childhood friend and I playing it together, and it made Mirror Mode much easier as we only needed to focus on driving or item management, not both. Plus the special items made mixing and matching characters fun, giving a good reason to pick one medium character over another. For example I’d choose Baby Bowser and my friend would take on Baby Mario for their specialties and weight distribution allowing for the light accelerator karts, but it could be used with light medium or medium heavy or light heavy. I miss it a lot

    Something I don’t see mentioned very often about Mario Kart Wii: back when the official online servers were still active, Nintendo held special events online, with modes that weren’t available in the base game. Things like doing races on modified versions of the battle courses, organized tournament formats and even mission mode style stages have been recreated by the incredibly active modding community, but these events gave the game a lot of personality when it was supported by Nintendo.

    You have sorely understated what makes Double Dash co-op so good. The co-op isn't a mere novelty, its quite a game changer.
    1. Double Start Boost. You and your partner have to push A at the same time, and the timing is very strict so you MUST be in sync. If you succeed you get a massive boost compared to the normal one.
    2. When the Driver is drifting the Rider spins the analog stick to charge the Drift Boost. The faster the spin the faster the charge.
    3. The Rider has the ability to punch other racers with L and R, this has 3 functions:
    A) It causes other racers to spin out.
    B) It steals another racers item they're holding.
    C) It causes your kart to slide in that direction, potentially avoiding danger or seizing an opportunity the driver didn't see.
    With good synergy, a two player kart is a powerful force on the road. Or two teams with terrible synergy for a chaotic but hilarious good time. I had lots of fierce competitions among my friends , my partner and i were equally good drivers but he was terrible at support, but we were the best combo out of everyone lol we never lost. Well, "lose" meaning placing lower than the other team.

    Powerslide boosting and starting line boosting were both a thing in SMK, just harder to pull off and less obvious. You can get a boost on starting line if you accelerate near the end of the first light. It's tricky to time but I usually use the sound as a reference and press the acceleration as soon as the first beep ends.
    As for powerslide boost, you have to keep a slide for quite a while, not letting go of the accel button, once you stop the slide, the kart engine will pitch up super high and that's how you know you got it, you'll go faster too.

  • @RTheu2109

    Somethings regarding Super Mario Kart you didn't mention
    The feather item comes from this game and is essential for some shortcuts and avoiding obstacles.
    You can do the rocket start in SMK too but the timing is suuuper tight.
    And something exclusive to this game, the CPU items, like the cupcake that makes you small, and the fact that the CPU is locked to their specific items.

  • @Espeon5
    @Espeon5 2 года назад +7

    A correction: Super Mario Kart DOES let you get a boost at the beginning of the race if you hold down the b button at the right time, it’s just that the timing is kind of precise(about 5 frames after you hear the first beep on the countdown). It takes some getting used to, but I think Super Mario Kart is just as good as some of the other Mario Kart games

    • @Espeon5
      @Espeon5 2 года назад +4

      Also another thing that you didn’t mention about SMK that’s pretty interesting is they the computers don’t rubberband. They all have set paths and times that they are supposed to finish at, and the order of who finishes when changes depending on the character you pick. Great video!

    • @JohnSmith-sk7cg
      @JohnSmith-sk7cg 2 года назад

      I honestly think that the original is the best. The lack of rubber banding on racers and item rolls (save for a handful of item whitelist/blacklists based on position), the need for precise timing with backdropping items to counter attacks, and no blue shell make it the most "fair" of the games in terms of the skill bubbling to the top.
      I'd want to play a later iteration if the whole family is joining in, but if its among peers, no other entry allows you to consistently crush an opponent with skill.

  • @EWOODJ
    @EWOODJ 2 года назад +6

    SMK also has a rocket start.
    The Boo item in SMK also takes your opponents item. Unlike in others games, however, you are still tangible, able to get hit by items.
    SMK also gives you a slight speed boot after drifting for some time.
    SMK also has ghost data. You can even race against a computer controlled ghost by selecting a character using a second controller.
    The blue shell in MK64 and Super Circuit hits all odd numbered opponents in front of you.
    The ranking system in Super Circuit is not just focused on how fast you go, but also a lot of other factors. Out of all the MK games with ranking systems, SC is the most complicated, but still easy to understand once learn what the factors are.
    The items in Double Dash drop from you depending on the item you’re hit with or if you’re holding a triple item.
    I’m sure you know this but since you didn’t mention it, you can unlock the option to use bikes and karts in 50cc and 100cc respectively.

    • @CrickettoSantalune
      @CrickettoSantalune 2 года назад +7

      Maybe the game would be much more difficult with traffic. This game is already kinda hard with its touch controls and lack for Bluetooth controller support, actually I think that's why courses like Toad Turnpike, Mushroom City, Shroom Ridge or Moonview Highway won't appear on MKT :/

    • @dresseuse_de_johto
      @dresseuse_de_johto 2 года назад +1

      Traffic cars wouldn't work that well with Tour's controls.
      And traffic cars are always the main gimmick of the courses they're featured in, and city courses already have a main gimmick: Being based on real world locations. Having two main gimmicks would weaken both.
      And it's would also be kinda complicated to get traffic cars in most of the city courses because of their layout. A lot of them have glider ramps, so there's no flat closed loop for traffic cars.
      And Vancouver 1 goes on a wooden bridge in a forest, Amsterdam 2 or 3 will go into water, Singapore 1 goes on a pool on a building roof, and Los Angeles 1 goes on a beach. Not ideal environments for cars.
      That said, I'd still like one city course with traffic cars. It would make it a little unique among the others, and that would be cool.

First off, Mk8 on the Wii U didn't have the driving assist at all, and it is enabled by default on the Switch. The Wii U version is also a more satisfying game for completionists and technical players, due to changes in difficulty and having most things unlocked in the switch version by default. Please don't take this comment as negative. It's not intended to be. I just wanted to point out a few things, while also giving the original mk8 some attention.

    Nice vid and thoughts on all Mario kart games. All sections were explained well except for DD that you skimmed by quickly. You missed it's more violent drifting in the series, it's slippery controls and newly added characters. You didn't talk about the tracks at all compared to Wii and 8 and how there is a All-Cup Tour. Lastly, forgot the mention that it was the first Mario kart to add Kart and character unlockables and first kart game in the series to have a more diverse choice in your layout.
    Also wished there was more info on Tour, but other than that nice vid and nice to hear your thoughts.

    This was super cool and a blast from the past. I think you may have glossed over a lot of some of the details of some of the games though, like Mario Kart double dash, and its multiplayer mode which shines above most any other mk game's multiplayer mode, and I've heard it spoken of with reverence in a few circles I think.
    It also brought an absolutely massive amount of polish to the N64 controls, which were pretty loose and hard to play with IMO.
    There's a few other minor errors throughout, I don't know if there's a person to be a fact checker or a sounding board but you have a great presentation style and capture a lot of cool stuff about the games, I think it would be cool to bring it to that next level of possible somehow. :) :3

    Tour controls arent that bad, especially when you consider the platform it was released on. The problem is, people seems to give up too easily and doesnt want to invest just a bit of practice in order to get the controls, especially when they use a bad setting such as the default steer option. If you change it in the options menu, you get a pretty decent control scheme (jumps to steer and chain mini turbos, and using the arrow guide just for small adjustments).

    One thing I wish you talked about more was the physics in each game, and how it affects the controls. Double Dash feels like your kart has a lot of weight, yet feels very fast. Wii feels very heavy at times, and you drift soooo far in Snes and Super Circut compared to other games. Mario Kart 7 and 8 have much tighter controls than most of the other games.
    For me personally, my biggest problem with 8 is many of the retro tracks are so damn wide, with courses like grumble Volcano and Snes rainbow road losing a lot of their challenge as a result. This is mainly why I prefer 7 to 8, it stikes that nice balance.
    Overall though great video, really cool to see a take on the arcade games as well!!

      That's a lie lol, on lap 3 on grumble volcano in 8 the top ramp just before the finish line is a very wide road in Wii, but in 8 it's an incredibly tight road close to the off-road so if you screw up you either slow down in the offroad or fall off.

    You can also dodge the blue shell by using the mushroom. As a matter of fact, it used to be the only item to beat the blue shell before the super horn was introduce. It's never mentioned in the game but it is possible. I learned about it in MKWii and it's also doable in MK8/MK8D (though the timing is more precise in this game). Idk if it's doable on the other Mario Kart games though. I only know you can do it in MKWii and MK8/Deluxe (and probably MK7)

    • @Astra3yt
      @Astra3yt 2 года назад

      It's not doable in Double Dash, so I would expect the first game that introduced the shroom dodge is MkWii. You can also use invincibility items to dodge a blue shell (star, bullet bill, boo in Mk8 Deluxe etc.). Though, to be fair, in the video it was said that super horn is the only item that can cancel a blue shell, not dodge it.

    • @redhatviewer
      @redhatviewer 2 года назад

      @@Astra3yt True, but it can be misleading not knowing that there are other ways to avoid the blue/spiny shell. I notice that the way Nintendo marketed the super horn when MK8 was first announced, they say that it's the only item to beat the blue shell even though we know that there are other ways to avoid it and that includes the mushroom dodge.

    • @Astra3yt
      @Astra3yt 2 года назад

      @@redhatviewer I kinda think that the super horn should not destroy a blue shell. It's too easy to avoid with it and it just defeats the point of the blue shell, to stop the person in the first place.
      Shroom at least requires skill and timing and is way harder to execute and, therefore, way easier to miss the timing. But that's completely another topic.

    • @redhatviewer
      @redhatviewer 2 года назад

      @@Astra3yt You have a point but I think the low rng of obtaining the super horn when you're in first place balances it out of it's usefulness just to make it fair for all players. It's not often you get the super horn in your possession when you're in first place all the time so I think that's out of the question.

    • @Astra3yt
      @Astra3yt 2 года назад +1

      @@redhatviewer The chance of getting a mushroom in first is none. I don't think the low probability of getting a super horn in first really balances it out. Sure, maybe getting a mushroom in first can be unbalanced too, but trust me, players would keep it if it wasn't for the super horn. But then again, getting hit by a blue shell isn't as punishing since MK7 anyway.
      In another words, I feel like that once you have a lead it's way easier to maintain than it used to be.
