    As a die-hard fan of F-Zero (I firmly believe no racing game will ever top GX), I really like this review. It's extremely fair and highlights GX's difficulty without denouncing the game or just being hard to control, etc. Hit on all the major points about the fun camp, controls, etc without coming across as fawning, and legitimately addresses the fact that the story mode (the first mode that most players will try to play) is REALLY damn hard, a little too hard for how central it is.

    One thing you should master in the GBA F-Zero is "Blast Tapping" (granted, it exists in SNES but it's made as a "must learn" tactic from MV) which is repeatedly pressing the gas to take corners and to regain grip from bumps.

      Also double shoulder drift in the 3D games; by half pressing both shoulder buttons you can enter a controlled drift that in some tracks might as well be neccesary, by doing this move until you release you WILL NOT slide out and lose speed massively during a drift like you would if you just yanked the stick into a turn

  • @LinkageAX
    @LinkageAX 2 года назад +12

    Good to see someone new getting into the franchise! In GX if you press X and left/right you can do the side attack from fzero X, which is double-tap R or Z. These attacks are stronger than the spin and also knock enemies off the course, guaranteeing a kill.
    With AX, I had the opportunity to play it at an old arcade near Ikebukuro in Japan and it was pretty fun. It's a lot harder the control than GX because the machine is shaking continuously and you use a steering wheel to turn. It feels great though and I recommend tracking a machine down if you ever go to Japan.

      If you dont want the machine to move dont use the seatbelt and its much easier to control as in ax you got more grip on the ground in jumps compared to gx and drifts have grip and dont lose you any speed unlike gx where a drift costs you speed but in ax you gain speed in a drift, you can even snake with it to get an unbearable amount of speed with the drift

    Can't wait to see what you got planned for a second part, as considering only GP Legend and Climax were remaining, I'm thinking that you might be covering some more extra content as well! Also, there's a couple of corrections I got regarding some stuff you've talked:
    -Regarding the N64 Disk Drive, its not that "most stuff" for it didn't get released outside of Japan, but that absolutely nothing about it, not even the addon itself, got released outside of Japan ever (it was a commercial failure so despite there being a plan to export it, that never happen), and the only thing remotely related to the N64DD that got released internationally was Doshin the Giant, and that was as a Gamecube game.
    -You can actually find patched versions of the Expansion Kit (either as a Cartridge+Expansion combo, or just the standalone Disk; the latter is the recommended option to actually save your stuff but you need to use an emulator that supports 64DD combo disk loading) that has translated Track Editor and Car Editor menus. While I haven't played it in a long while, I remember making a lot of stuff with it; surprisingly intuitive outside of figuring out what button does what.
    -There's a very common myth about AX in GX being exactly the same as the real deal, but its actually just a code that reenables the AX menus and timer, but otherwise its literally just F-Zero GX. The actual F-Zero AX has altered physics and controls (due to that you play it on a wheel, they resemble F-Zero X much more in that you only have two side brakes that are also used for attacks instead of separate air brakes and attack buttons), which means that there's tech from one version that doesn't work in the other one (AX has "T-Drift", while GX had much more techniques that simply don't work in AX). However, you can only get to play AX outside of a real arcade cabinet if you have a modded Nintendo Wii/Wii U and Nintendont, since unfortunately the only Triforce emulator that works does not the real arcade version of the game (There was an older version of it that did...but had a lot of issues; I tried that myself years ago so take my word on that it is unfortunately unplayable on that old emulator).
    That said, I didn't ever expect to see an F-Zero video from you, glad to see that you enjoyed playing them!!

    • @Niosai
      @Niosai  2 года назад +2

    If you complete all the GPs on Master mode you unlock the AX cup, or alternatively all the missions on the hardest difficulty. It wasn't locked behind an action replay, it was a legitimate unlockable in the game, albeit almost impossible for most players. Alternatively linking your Gamecube memory card with the AX arcade machine will also unlock it in GX.
    Also, I happened to find an AX machine in the wild in a random arcade in Indonesia, although there are a few different variants. There are the static cabinets and then there are the moving gyro ones. The latter is really a surreal experience and if you can find one near you I certainly reccomend. I literally spent the entire day playing AX as it was 10cents a track (in Indonesia).

I still remember this was before RUclips came into existence and when I needed help beating each of the story missions on Very Hard to unlock each AX machine I had to visit a fan made website that uploaded low resolution videos of them beating each mission on the hardest difficulty. Chapter 7 was the hardest mission for sure and it was the only one I couldn't beat for the longest time. I was able to locate an AX arcade machine at my local AMC theater, brought my GameCube memory card to unlock the Pink Spider machine. Months later I finally beat the dreaded Chapter 7 and it was one of the most euphoric moments in my gaming history. Great video! Nice to see someone else giving this franchise some attention. In terms of the GX section, I have one fact check and a bit of fun info.
    You mentioned that Nintendo knocked it out of the park when you were talking about the track design. Nintendo was the publisher, but the game was developed by Amusement Vision, a division of SEGA. And fun fact, the game was built using the same engine as the Monkey Ball series.
    Listen to this! You mentioned the story mode cutscene music and you specifically played the Story Mode Chapter 3 Intro scene (to highlight the comically cheese voive acting), the same music you mention later that says “F-Zero” over and over as if it’s a ballad. The crazy thing about the music that plays in that cutscene is that it’s actually a real song! I don’t know what the process was internally, but the music in the cutscene is almost a 1:1 pirated version of this other song, but with different lyrics. It’s even in the same key! I can’t take the credit for this discovery though. I learned it from this video over here by Blue Falcon: ruclips.net/video/xCs5rfnW2MU/видео.html
    I also just finished up work on a remaster of the ENTIRE GX soundtrack. Courses, menus, story, and pilot profile themes, all original versions remastered in an ultra high quality widened audio format. And I even include full matching recorded gameplay to the music so you can watch while you listen. It’s definitely the definitive version of this OST on RUclips. If you’re interested to hear or you’re skeptical of these claims, have a listen at my channel: ruclips.net/video/EKrP_K52_AU/видео.html
    And if you really really love the music, you can have the remastered audio files through my Patreon!

    Serious note, that I recognized the stock footage you were using for F-Zero Maximum velocity where the Fireball is being piloted perfectly by the demo player, it's using the tap acceleration technique. Unless you'd perfected that technique yourself using the Fireball, one of the more hard to control vehicles, I'm fairly sure that is indeed the demo that plays when you don't press start for a while.
    The control method that you indicated that "helps" with the slippy slidey handling is a core mechanic necessary for succeeding at racing normally. It's like saying that locking on enemies in Dark Souls "helps" facilitate combat.
    I don't think you gave the game a fair shake.

    • @Niosai
      @Niosai  2 года назад

      I actually will address this kinda in part 2, but I'll explain my mindset here, too. The blast turning/tap acceleration is clearly pivotal to the gameplay, but that's what makes this game so weak for me. When X and GX feel so perfect to control, this one is the outlier. I figured it out, I just didn't enjoy it.
      Oh, and that footage was all me. I actually went back and checked just now. Shortly after that, on the final lap, I hit enough walls to lose a machine. Like I said, I figured out the blast turning, I just couldn't stand how bad it felt to play. I think GP Legend and Climax were far better control-wise!

    In f-zero x you can double tap z or r to side attack, which can also be used to quick turn, if you press z or r plus the opposite direction on the stick you can do really sharp turns.

    Maximum Velocity controls perfectly fine when you get used to it. It's pretty good in fact because every vehicle has different ways to control, some are very slippery some are very tight, you just need practice to figure out. I loved the game as a teen.

    Big F-Zero fan here, and you nailed all the main points to the series. The big allure of F-Zero is the sense of speed, which is so much better than modern car racers like Forza. I won’t nail you for hating on MV, and I agree that the machines are real slidy. The trick for me was practice. I played that game daily for years, to the point that blast-turning (tapping A rapidly during turns) was an instinct. Anyhow, great video on a franchise that needs more love. Keep up the good work!

    I really love this series with all of my heart, especially GX and GP Legend. GX is just a legendary game which was made by Amusement Vision 2(or AV2) which was a company that work for SEGA and it's previous game was a little game called "Super Monkey Ball", in fact, GX and SMB shares the same engine and yes, Toshihiro Nagoshi worked on GX too before jumping into the Yakuza series. GP Legend on the other hand, works as game based on the F-Zero anime(yes, there's one) and it's a great GBA game with much better controls than MV.

    BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2: The 5 tracks we have are the ones that were in the Practice rom, and are also the ones that were added in Grand Prix 1. I personally think these are GREAT tracks, and well worthy of their place in F-Zero SNES. The 4 new machines are also a welcome addition. The 5 tracks that were lost to time, Forest I/II/II and Metal Fort I/II, have survived in a VHS recording, and they look like they were pretty fun. Hopefully we'll get to play them someday.

    I also played F-Zero AX on the cabinet and it was tons of fun. Unfortunately the wheel got broken and you couldn't nose dive so I stopped playing it. And now that cabinet is gone leaving only one cabinet in my entire country. If I knew how rare those cabinets are I definitely would have played it a lot more.
    The cabinets also can link themselves up to 8 players maybe? and there is an even rarer bigger version called 'monster ride'.

    Regarding AX, what you're playing is a leftover unused AX menu on the disc of the GX. You're still playing GX, and those cheats simply enable that menu. The actual AX ROM (that weighs ~500MB) has different music, different controls (naturally), completely different physics and apparently it also has better graphics, because Sega Triforce has 2x the RAM of the Gamecube.
    To play the real deal, you need a Wii with Homebrew, and an app called Nintendont, which lets you play Gamecube ROMs, and which also uses the extra performance and memory of the Wii to play Sega Triforce games. There's no support for memory cards though, but there is support for F-Zero AX License Card emulation, which lets you access the License Card features and perks, albeit in AX only, and you naturally cannot carry over your progress onto a real license card.

Let alone GX's story were basically done and created by the same people who i think did the story for the Yakuza games so it comes out a good way. Let alone the story was ment to be challenging and man it was hardcore when i played it

    Anither thing to note about thoae brutally hars missions in story mode js thats how you unlock fzero ax racers. You have to beat them on the hardest difficulty. Also those one on one races like the one with goro in the video, youre supposed to stay in close second the enture race then pass him the last second. They dont boost when theyre in 1st.

    So a detail about Blast Turning (the strategy you were talking about in the Maximum Velocity section): turning the accelerator off and then back on again in quick succession restores your traction, and you can do this as much as you want during a turn, even though the manual makes it sound like you can only do this once. It also works in every 2D F-Zero game. Now, Maximum Velocity is still too slippery, and Blast Turning *that* much (like, 3-5 times per turn on average) shouldn't be a thing you have to do, but doing it does make the handling much better.

    • @Niosai
      @Niosai  2 года назад

      Yeah, I didn't go into too much detail about it, but I actually initially found out about blast turning online before I knew it was mentioned in the manual. It's hard to tell from the video, but using that exact strategy was the only way I was able to complete any of the tracks
