He uses a simple but powerful technique called capture-recapture, developed by biologists studying animal populations.

      so théy could take a smoke break :P Why bother with getting 600 pingpongballs and numbering them all several times, if you can just wheel in the TV and VCR :P

      He's a legend, many kids from the 80's learned so much from him while being entertained. But sadly he disappeared from our TV's by the 90's

    I would have counted the balls in each direction and multiplied them. But this seems a much more interesting method.

    Is there a mathematical name for this estimation because I searched for a theory about this situation, but I could not find anything?

      It's literally said in the video. It's called Capture Recapture .
      The method in order to work it out for anything is: The first sample divided by repeats then times by second sample.
