I take my hat off to you, you are so considerable. A lot of people wouldn't even think about people with disabilities who want to game. Glad to see people like you exist, love your videos, you are very talented in the work that you do. Keep it up man.
GREAT WORK and very much needed.. Unfortunately I don't have an XBOX, much less Xbox One, and as a disabled veteran on army disability pay, I don't see that changing anytime soon. for me, I lost 4 fingers on my left hand, so there are some buttons I really cannot access on a controller, especially if I'm trying to play against others. so it's good to see you design a controller for someone else with some game controller challenges
So you only have your thumb on your left hand? I know a guy that can reroute any button on a controller to the backside so you could get one with the LB and LT on the right rear of the controller. That might solve your problems. Here's a link to his FB page: facebook.com/XboxRefurb?fref=ts
After watching a few videos, this channel has earned my subscription! In terms of improving this particular design...I imagine it might be easier to use the bottom joystick if it is moved to the other side (RHS) of the controller, due to the reduction of the moment required to operate it. It would probably have to be slightly extended so as not to interfere with the lower right part of the palm. It would be cool to be able to integrate the rumble pack from the left trigger into the alternate 3D printed trigger. Also, the shape of the 3D printed D-pad also looks like it might be a bit painful to operate after a while (depending on frequency of use, which tbh is not often in my xp). Also you could mount a little pivoted button mounted on the face to make the xbox button and the select (or 'share') button more accessible, but the pivots might be too fragile for practical use.
Hi Ben, I am thrilled to meet u and know what u do. I have Expressive Aphasia and I cannot use my right hard/arm due to an accident/incidence. I just purchased a PS4 because I love PS.... I would love it if u can make a left handed PS4 Mod for me......or maybe point me in a direction around Olympia WA that could assist me!!! I have been asking around, but nobody has any clue. thx Ben!!! Josh
Is there a way to make a left handed controller my little cousin had lost his arm from a tumor and loves playing games he's 6 years old and I want to get one for him as a present
Awesome design you made the xbox one controller unique and special not everybody on youtube is not gonna appriciate the design of the one handed xbox one controller but i do it took great skill to do what you did and you are a very talented and skilled at what you do and take pride into helping others that has only one arm and made that special controller just for the keep doing what you are doing i love that design what a breakthrough and im happy to see something like that on youtube so rare as that so again keep doing what you are doing and come up with more ways for us to use electronics love the video.
+BlastRyderMega X no, the knee joystick controller is a bad design, a one handed controller needs to have a joystick design. the design in this video is terrible. there are people who have tried this and agree. there are much better designed one handed controllers out there.
Scrolling through the comments is depressing, so many ppl do not understand the difficulties involved with being an amputee, nor the intricacies involved in making a controller like this. Is this practical for the lazy gamer that wants to eat Doritos and chug Mtn dew while playing CoD? NO! I had to train myself to use a razer naga after my accident(17 buttons w/ programmable software) and within the past year a friend bought me the stinkyboard (4 button foot pedal w/ software). This was not easy and still after 2 years i find myself struggling in certain games and completely unable to play certain genres(fighting, racing, flying) not to mention the inability to relax while gaming which takes its toll on my body during long sessions. I've always been mainly a pc gamer but my one weakness is Halo, however i can see this being hugely beneficial for indie games and with a slight modification to the d-pad, fighting games! To be able to sit back and chill on a couch or bed while gaming again makes this worth every penny! I will be emailing you soon! Thank you sir!
I'm not sure if this is even possible due to hand size, but have you ever tried putting the replacement left analog stick on the bottom of the right handle instead of the bottom of the left handle? If it doesn't get in the way of your hand, I feel like that would give you much better control of the left stick because it's placed directly under the pressure your right hand exerts.
I know I'm commenting on an old video, but I just have to say thank you for making this. My mom has a gimp hand that can only clasp and seeing that joystick on the leg has inspired me to make my own controller mod so my mom can play games with the rest of the family.
I am stroke surveyor and play one handed using my chin to move the left stick and using my right hand to use the right trigger and right bumper. I use my right side of my jaw to depress left trigger and left bumper. I have become good at playing like this. The main problem I have is playing online Its not fast enough to aim and shoot so Iusually loose on those unexpected shoot outs
Really happy this guy can game again. Getting back to some form of normalise in life after war is difficult enough never mind doing it with an injury like his. Great mod for a great cause. The only thing I was unsure of was the leg switch being exposed and glued into place. It would have been nice to have been able to make an enclosure it could mount in that attached to the controller body.
This video really depresses me. I loss use of my left hand after having a stroke & I can't even play the Xbox 1 I own. Reminds me that I'll never play video games again.
Oculus Rift uses a two hand controller. I've found an 18 button mouse that helps for some PC games. But some of the PC games I want to play don't allow for the wasd direction keys to be reassigned.
Timothy, no need to be depressed. I lost the use of my right hand due to stroke and it hasn't stopped me from gaming on my XB1. There are numerous lower cost options than a Ben Heck controller to get back to gaming. AbleGamers and SpecialEffect are both good starting points. SpecialEffect in particular has good RUclips videos on workarounds. If you have a particular issue/challenge just let me know.
I was brn 3 months pre mature and i have very limited use of my left hand, I also play video games one handed.. my friend wrote an article about how i play with a 360 controller and this is how i play with a standard 360 controller.. I thought it might interest you. " Sitting on his couch, the 360 controller is tilted sideways with his index finger on the left thumbstick and his thumb on the right one. His middle finger is used to press the left trigger and bumper, his pinky finger on the right trigger and bumper. Whenever he needs to access the face buttons, he quickly slides his thumb back and forth. He handles the Dualshock 3 in a similar fashion" I have some pictures up under my account. also same method is used for ps4 controllers..
I had a single handed controller for ps1 when i broke practically every bone in my arm when i was younger. Ascii made it i think... it was wicked once i got the hang of it!
I don't know if this is too hard or not, but to do left and right bumper you should have added a Black and White button like the original Xbox controller and used right bumper and right trigger as left and right trigger. It would be a lot better for playing one handed, but I'm sure it would be a lot more difficult.
I don't know anything about electronics, let alone the inner workings of a controller, but it would be cool if it was also One and two hand compatible.
I was disassembling a 360 controller once to paint it, and I was taking the triggers out, spring went flying out and I couldn't find it, so I just put a pen spring in it and it worked even better. Thanks Microsoft!
Ben. I think I saw you removing the left thumb stick and putting it somewhere else in the controller. My questions is. Can you use a optical mouse as the thumb stick to use it with my lap? If possible. How? Let me know. Thanks
Not using your automatic hot glue gun? Why not? Does it need tweaking? The "leg dpad" is a great idea, but the external wiring is kind of tacky. Is there room to make it recess into the controller or make the switch fit inside like the L3 button? No autofire mods or anything like that planned? I hope to see a Mark II that is a bit more polished. :)
Hello. So happy I found you. Our son a year ago March 2021 was in a horrible car accident. He loves video games but is unable to play them because his left hand is not functioning well. Do you sell these controllers and if so how do I purchase one for him. He would love this so much!!!! Thank you so much for doing this.
Hello ben love the work your doing. I was wondering the desolder iron your using in this video what model is it. I could not find on site you talked out
hey ben, you can actually make springs instead of buying them, just pick a piece of soldering wire or any other metal wire of your liking and roll it around a screw(the size of the screw depends on the size you want the spring) and them you just unscrew your new home made spring from the screw ^^ hope you see this, will save you a lot of money XD
Nice idea, but won't work. If you bend a peace of wire around a screw, you'll form a nice coil, but the metal wire won't have the needed memory. When depressed or extended, the homemade spring will retain the new shape instead of going back to it's "memory"
I swear this is a true dream... Today, I dreamed that i saw you and asked you for a single-handed xbox one controller and you said "I can't it costs 3000$ dollars!"
if there is a Wii U mod to do, I say its to use its Wii U Tablet to see if you can make a 3DS mod that can hook up your TV with the 3D screen as the top and the gamepad as the bottom
That's pretty ambitious... XD (on an unrelated note, I noticed that since an update done who knows when, the gamepad screen - but not the buttons - now works in Wii mode - The gamepad even has a 'sensor bar' built into it. - Since Wii games don't use dual screens, you can now play every wii game without having a TV if you have a Wii U...)
My girlfriend loves gaming but has muscular dystrophy and tiny hands. She has a hard time pressing the buttons especially the triggers bumpers and the buttons under the joysticks. Would it be difficult to make a small controller that's extremely easy to use?
Just watching this for informaiton on the Xbox One controller. If microsoft and the Xbox department is going opensource Ben Heck should be the one to tell people what they did in the controllers.
Hey Ben, have a co-worker who's grandson has cancer and has lost the use of his left hand. He's trying to get something like what you've put together here by Christmas and was hoping to get some help on this. Would really appreciate a PM if you're able to assist
+Corey Petroff Sorry we didn't see this in time for Christmas, but you can purchase one-handed controllers here. www.benheck.com/controllers/ Good luck to your co-worker's grandson and happy belated holidays!
+The Ben Heck Show Hey, I just wanted to say you are doing an amazing thing for people and I really appreciate it. Keep on doing what you do! Best wishes.
+The Ben Heck Show aren't you selling you it for too much? How greedy can you be? Xbox one costs 400 dollars. How can you sell it for 300 dollars? I was hoping I can play again but you people try to make a business out of everything. 200 dollars would have been a bit understandable.. I really hate you..😢
+T.O.P VIP BIG BANG He probably makes them by hand, and has to pay for parts which aren't cheap. Also, Labour is also a factor in cost. If you need a controller like that or better just go to any college or university technology/engineering department. Most clubs would make it for fun as a project if you asked. I hope I helped.
As a person who plays video games I've noticed there is always a barrier between people who play xbox over playstation and playstation over xbox so could you make a controller mod that puts a xbox one controller into the case of a ps4 controller and vise versa I think with that you should be able to eliminate the barrier between the two and reunite ps4 people and xbox one people
Wait, if you have a 3D printer available, why not make a new plastic shell for it? Turn the board sideways and rotate the stick on that hand. Hell, I'd almost go as far as having the other stick controlled by the pointer and both bumpers and triggers set for the middle and ring fingers.
Luckily the Wii remote is good in many games with just one hand. I hope those who need a game that can be played with one hand give those games a try. Kinect games usually don't need a controller, which is also good.
dear Ben heck, which is technically superior, and which is more "well built" in your own personal opinion, the ps4 controller or xbox1?? @The Ben Heck Show
I have disassembled both. On the inside, the ps4 seems to be built a smarter way, and fits together better in my opinion. the Xbox one is sturdier, and seems much less likely to break.
hey Ben, I am a quadriplegic and would like to play fsg but I can't press any of the the buttons on top. I use my mouth to move the joystick and my thumb to. . press the X button. is there any way you can help me?
(Question?/Mod) I have a arcade stick which uses macro ( program combos) and I was wondering would the brain or microcontroller be reponsible for my macro limit or speed limit? This is just a small project that could give me infinite Streetfighter Combos! I would like to modify if this the component that controls everything. So do you agree, this is my focal point to gain my power/turbo/ extra macros? Also would the arduino be able to tell me my current microcontrollers program?
On your right handed model for the modified left bumper button, does this toggle on and off? Some video games require the user to "hold down" the left bumper with the left hand (sniper mode) plus do other things with the right hand simultaneously. Or if not--can it be made to toggle on and off to free up the right thumb?
Can you please modify an Xbox One controller to use USB Mini instead of the flimsy USB Micro that you have to buy a new cable for every month? I love the controller, but it is a pain in the ass to use on the PC because if you barely bump the controller it disconnects.
Hey i am a traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury survivor. I am semi paralyzed on the left side of my body and have not been able to hold a controller since my accident because i only have one hand that works. I have a really good idea for an adaptive controller layout but I lack the mechanical/electrical skills and knowledge to make it happen. Please ley me know if you're willing to help and I can send you my ideas! Finding one-handed adaptions has been something really difficult for us disabled people with one hand
Surely the Leg actuated analogue stick should be on the right of a right handed controller (visa versa on left handed) so less force is use to hold it against your leg..?
I got stitches in my hand a few year ago, and my gaming was gimped during the healing. I had thought during this how bad it would be to try gaming with out the use of a hand. I had thought it would be easier to assign some or most buttons to foot petals, like a piano.
Hey Ben love the videos, BUT has it ever entered your mind that people at home watch these in hopes to build some of this stuff themselves?? It sounds like a no brainer but believe it or not most of us don't have access to computerized CNC equipment, or your beloved 3D printer..... It would be awesome if you could bring us some of your sick ass videos where you use tool most of us can find in out home shop.
like he saide that this idea came from a veteran and peplo help handikaps soo if a handikapet walkt in a work shop they probolbly woud help him soo he can play video game (sory for speling i come from sweden were you talks swedish and have more leters åäö)
I would like to take back a bit of this comment... I no w own a 3d printer and i find myself using it for everything. Although it makes my projects more professional, I would like to note that everything that is printed, has to be designed and drawn in a program.
At least someone is thinking about the one handed gamers.
Them too. Still, the nun-chuck.
I have a friend with one arm and he can play on a normal controller
Axel C good for him. My brother can’t.
Axel C are you saying to not make it easier for one handed people? If so you’re a trash human
I broke my
Arm
I take my hat off to you, you are so considerable. A lot of people wouldn't even think about people with disabilities who want to game. Glad to see people like you exist, love your videos, you are very talented in the work that you do. Keep it up man.

Sweet.
Best controller of the new generation made to work with everyone :)
The moment you realize the person is left handed
Hargettt These can be made for either hand. I choose to show the right-handed version in the episode because it's the most common request I get.
90% of the world is right handed.
maybe.
Someone Random 90% of the world is WRONG handed!!! #lefthanded4lyfe
left handed people are generally more creative from my personal experience. Full disclosure, i am left handed.

I think that Microsoft and Sony should make one handed factory made controllers.
target group is too small, it won´t pay off. Only fablabs with 3D printers can make these on demand without burning heaps of cash.
Scrolling through the comments is depressing, so many ppl do not understand the difficulties involved with being an amputee, nor the intricacies involved in making a controller like this. Is this practical for the lazy gamer that wants to eat Doritos and chug Mtn dew while playing CoD? NO!

Ben making it possible for everyone to enjoy the next console generation. Awesome work.
so very very smart to not only map out how everything would work but to adapt the original controller, very impressive
Its awesome when people use their ingenuity to help others out. Great work. Kudos
ben I gotta say this is very impressive, you've always been an inspiration to hardware specialists all over the world, great job buddy! :-)
I'm not sure if this is even possible due to hand size, but have you ever tried putting the replacement left analog stick on the bottom of the right handle instead of the bottom of the left handle? you sir, are a saint!!! God bless you for helping people in need!!!
Such a cool controller, I can't wait for the PC drivers.
I fucking love the fact that theatre of magic and attack from mars are in the background. two of my favorite pinball games.
Oh my god. He is so darn inventive and smart, he should work for like some huge company or something, because he is truly amazing!
Really happy this guy can game again. Getting back to some form of normalise in life after war is difficult enough never mind doing it with an injury like his. Great mod for a great cause. The only thing I was unsure of was the leg switch being exposed and glued into place. Hi there , I game one handed using a joystick! I can't help you play Xbox :)
Xbox One
Wow ben this was amazing video, great controller mod. Cant wait till the next videos.
Would have been nice is you 3D printed a cover to fit over the axis module thingy underneath the controller, would given a super clean look.
You are the smartest human on earth. Watching this made me feel extremely stupid. I couldn't follow anything you were doing lol.
You should try to make a smart watch using an iPod 5g or other sort of device. It could play music, have video and tell time!
I don't know anything about electronics, let alone the inner workings of a controller, but it would be cool if it was also One and two hand compatible.
OMG HE IS NOT USING HIS AMAZING GLUEGUN!!
I'm hooking up a foot pedal from a rock band drum set, I think you should try something similar (may be better for the bumpers)
I was disassembling a 360 controller once to paint it, and I was taking the triggers out, spring went flying out and I couldn't find it, so I just put a pen spring in it and it worked even better. Thanks Microsoft!
i am very happy that you built one for him he must me really happy about it :D
Ben. I think I saw you removing the left thumb stick and putting it somewhere else in the controller. My questions is. Can you use a optical mouse as the thumb stick to use it with my lap? If possible. How? Let me know. Thanks
Where did you get that massive reel of solder? That is awesome!
It's so cool you do this kind of stuff
What happened to the Great Glue Gun? I see you are using default mechanical one again. :p
He did a giveaway for it.
Silly question, whenever I've used Hot Glue, I find it fairly flimsy, do you use a special brand or type Ben?
Not using your automatic hot glue gun? Why not? Does it need tweaking? The "leg dpad" is a great idea, but the external wiring is kind of tacky. Is there room to make it recess into the controller or make the switch fit inside like the L3 button? No autofire mods or anything like that planned? I hope to see a Mark II that is a bit more polished. :)
I had one hand(left for exact). How do I get one? Oh, what kind of Control should I get?
Hey, I have the exact same disability as you. Did you buy one or hear anything from them? What did you do?
Hello. So happy I found you. Our son a year ago March 2021 was in a horrible car accident. He loves video games but is unable to play them because his left hand is not functioning well. Do you sell these controllers and if so how do I purchase one for him. He would love this so much!!!! Thank you so much for doing this.
People like this should get all this "Oscars" and awards! Not stupid people from TV!
Two nice work Ben!!!
I see quite a big commercial potential in this. Sweet mod!
I woud have used pedals and a big d-pad you can use with a partial arm or with a foot
When depressed or extended, the homemade spring will retain the new shape instead of going back to it's "memory"
oh, i didnt knew this, thanks for the info guys, i only used this method once to make a cooper coil for a project, always learning something new
Awesome !!! Can you do the same for a pc controller or its the same thing ????
1. why use a regular gluegun again? and
2. Who is that person in the back?
when do you plan on making the xbox one laptop or ps4 laptop?
I swear this is a true dream... Today, I dreamed that i saw you and asked you for a single-handed xbox one controller and you said "I can't it costs 3000$ dollars!"
It would pretty fucked up if in the end the one-handed war guy had his left arm, not the right
this isn't the first one he's made, I'm pretty sure the war guy has his already.
hahahaha i wa thinking the same ...
Awesome work mate
I need it to look prettier, Would be cool to print an entire new controller casing so everything fits nicely.
finally tbhs turned to that cool show i knew in the past, and not a kids show...
Dude. You are a badass
For everyone asking about his hot glue gun, I believe they gave it away to a fan through element14.
That's right.

Wii u have fun
excellent I am so grateful to have all my limbs
I had know idea what you were talking about in the vid but I'm guessing that it's cool :)
Aha no more knifing or running in COD
(the leg-operated analog stick was really cool!)

If you need a controller like that or better just go to any college or university technology/engineering department. Most clubs would make it for fun as a project if you asked. I hope I helped.
True Ingenium thanks mate
The great glue gun?!?!?!
My son can only use his left hand….
Would be great to discuss options for ps4 and Xbox…. Many Thanks
Hey ben, Just thinking about the old Nintendo Power Glove. Would it be possible to make one for all the game systems?
You should get someone to do some artwork on it, there are plenty of people making custom controllers!
Good job !
will also be on the left hand ?
Great work!
"Junior, I have to tell you something. The floors on fire"
Can you please modify an Xbox One controller to use USB Mini instead of the flimsy USB Micro that you have to buy a new cable for every month? I love the controller, but it is a pain in the ass to use on the PC because if you barely bump the controller it disconnects.
Seeing a Wii U single handed controller would be interesting :P
Hey i am a traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury survivor. I am semi paralyzed on the left side of my body and have not been able to hold a controller since my accident because i only have one hand that works. I have a really good idea for an adaptive controller layout but I lack the mechanical/electrical skills and knowledge to make it happen. Please ley me know if you're willing to help and I can send you my ideas! Finding one-handed adaptions has been something really difficult for us disabled people with one hand
Not sure what number comment I am but bummed about packer loss. .... But love your show!
imagine the possibilities of Ben Heck modding a Steam controller!
what you made is amazing though. great work
this guy is amazing..
YOURE SO GENIUS
!!!!!
you didn't wire up the clickbutton of the left joystick, did you?
no great use of great glue gun?
Surely the Leg actuated analogue stick should be on the right of a right handed controller (visa versa on left handed) so less force is use to hold it against your leg..?
I got stitches in my hand a few year ago, and my gaming was gimped during the healing. I had thought during this how bad it would be to try gaming with out the use of a hand. I had thought it would be easier to assign some or most buttons to foot petals, like a piano.
hey ben do you think it would be possibal for you to build this with 1 hand
Hey Ben love the videos, BUT has it ever entered your mind that people at home watch these in hopes to build some of this stuff themselves?? It sounds like a no brainer but believe it or not most of us don't have access to computerized CNC equipment, or your beloved 3D printer..... It would be awesome if you could bring us some of your sick ass videos where you use tool most of us can find in out home shop.
like he saide that this idea came from a veteran and peplo help handikaps soo if a handikapet walkt in a work shop they probolbly woud help him soo he can play video game (sory for speling i come from sweden were you talks swedish and have more leters åäö)
that post was just a general comment about his channel, and how he seems to need a a 3d printer for everything
I would like to take back a bit of this comment... I no w own a 3d printer and i find myself using it for everything. Although it makes my projects more professional, I would like to note that everything that is printed, has to be designed and drawn in a program.
