  • Also spelled Penjikent, is a city in Tajikistan. It lies at the entrance to Zeravshan Valley. Around the town, there is one of the great cities of the pre-Islamic Sogdian peoples (ca. 6th century BCE - 11th century CE).
From Samarkand Uzbekistan I took a taxi to the border which took about an hour, then walked through both countries border passport controls. On the Tajikistan side, there were many taxi drivers asking me to take them. There were some guys there can give exchange money. The taxi ride from the border to the city of Panjakent took about fifteen minutes.

The city is small, in the center you can just walk around. Other places you can take a taxi, which is not expensive.
