I don’t think people are in pursuit of *happiness* … I think they are in pursuit of *purpose* , and happiness invariably follows if they can find purpose.
My disabled son makes me happy. When you talk about aspirations it made me think because that's what I do best. My aspirations are to be able to afford my sons supplies and food from week to week. While other peoples aspirations may be planning their next Disney World trip. Yes my son wants to go to Disney World. Will we go, I doubt it but I never give up hope. So I still aspire to make it happen. I aspire to be able to borrow a car for all my son's doctors appointments and mine too. My point being we all have different aspirations but I think the important thing is ones attitude in the situation they are in. Our world fell out from under us. So my aspirations changed. Did that make me less happy. Well I wasn't jumping up and down with joy. I just take it as it comes because that makes dealing with the bad easier, my attitude, or outlook if you may. I dont know if I got my message across. Basically not everyone is in a good place but I think attitude is what makes it easier. When you said you get up so early. I thought now that would not make me happy. Yet long ago when I could work I had to be at work 1 day a week at 5 am. I had to take my toddker with me, that was no party but we just did it. Did I like it, heck no. Did I do it, sure and I had a good attitude by thinking this will put food on the table. So I think along with what makes people happy and what are their aspirations comes with it. What is the attitude people have to accomplish what they do. Your thoughts on this?
Could you all say a prayer for my son shortly after writing my post. My littke boy git very, very sick. He's been hospitalized. They don't know whats wrong he has an awfully high fever. Ty so much.
hey Casey my cousin Wilbert works right next to 368 in the camera store with Juan. Hes a fan of your videos but hes too shy to go say hi, would be really cool if you passed by

One of my favorite books is called Designing Your Life and the authors talk about Happiness being a terrible destination. Instead it's a wonderful byproduct of a productive life. I think that's true. Those who aim for pleasure and happiness seem to find it elusive but those who DO things find it comes naturally, at the end of the day. So I no longer ask what can I do to be happy today, but rather, what can I do to be productive today? And of course there's the whole God and forgiveness thing but that's for another post.
cookingfordads This seems very true to me. Tomorrow I start my freshman year of high school, and I’ve realized that throughout all of middle school I was a lazy kid who didn’t do much of anything but play video games and a little bit of baseball. Now that I’ve noticed it, this last year I’ve been trying to help my parents around the house, doing chores and stuff like that more, and I’ve ran into many less arguments and found myself to be much happier.
What you say is really true, and I'm happy someone typed this in the comments because I disagreed with Casey when he said that Happiness is the universal goal/meaning of life. Happiness isn't a goal, it's a byproduct of a life that you like to live, be it productive or in any what that you want it. Read a book, "The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck" and it brought the "Backwards Law" to my attention. It's fascinating and it's self-explanatory, those who wish to seek happiness directly, will never get it because it doesn't work that way - that's why it's best described as a byproduct. From the book - "It's the idea that the more you pursue feeling better all the time, the less satisfied you become, as pursuing something only reinforces the fact that you lack it in the first place. You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life." That these words as what you want. Live a life you want to live, and happiness will come. Happiness does not come directly. Don't try too hard for it. Using the words of Ethan H3, chasing happiness could be a curse because we never know when we'll ever be happy and it'll never be enough. (but being productive on the other hand, you can put a limit on that) Hope you guys agree, been on this topic everyday ever since i read the book. Hopefully Casey reads this too. @cookingfordads hopefully this gives you more perspective on your topic.
What you talk about at 4:05 is pretty much what Dostoevsky said in his book Notes from Underground, "But man is a creature both frivolous and myopic and, perhaps like a chess player, he likes only the actual process of achieving and not the goal itself. But who knows (there's no guarantee), it may be that the entire earthly goal which humanity is striving towards consists solely in maintaining without a break the process of achievement - in other words, in life itself and not, properly speaking, in the goal which, of course, must be nothing but twice two is four, that is, a formula; and twice two is four is no longer life, gentlemen, but the beginning of death."
That's a heady observation, and it does resonate with truth. We're all trying to outrun life's eventual conclusions; some more aggressively than others.
What you're saying is only true if you fear death. Life has no objective purpose, we are here for no reason, therefore life is exactly what you make it.
You tell that to magnums carlsen in sure he will say something about goals. I mean you gotta convert, idiot to think he loves the process of getting into position only to draw. Magnus is champ cus he converts that is what's most important is the game. The rest means how you got here dont. Idiots who talk about philosophy that odjectify the whole grand scheme of things and dont actually see visually progressive concepts lose the ability to evolve.
I recently left a job I was at for years, it felt like I was stuck. There wasn't any room for advancement. I liked the people I worked with but was bored out of my mind, I also felt a lot of my potential was being wasted. So I left manual labor behind and got into the Arts, I started Glassblowing. Financially it wasn't a good idea, but for my Ambition my Purpose its what I needed. Theirs just so much more to learn and do in the glass world, I still have a long way to go BUT from here on I will never look back!
Did the same, except for the glassblowing. I decided to become an illustrator, I’m an architect but the job market it’s so hard, that I finally decided to start with drawing, and it’s scary as hell, but I think we have to keep pushing. Good luck 🍀
Happiness is priceless fam, coming from a 50 year old who never left manual labor to chase my dreams...I make a comfortable living, but i also work 80 hours a week doing shit i have to not what i want to...Good Luck
Hey thanks guys, I'm thinking a good challenge is needed sometimes to keep things interesting. Andrea illustrating/drawing sounds like something you could use here on RUclips. Thanks Dixie happiness is important can't forget that. I am starting to sell online Chris, going to try using Etsy, but I won't post the link here just to respect Casey since its his channel.
Casey watching this just gives me joy. Seeing your channel grow the amount it has and the amazing things your doing keep grinding. Don’t ever stop feeding ambition ambition is what creates a state of curiosity and a constant state of searching for a deeper purpose. Comfort comes from the constant seeking of ambition so Keep Seeking.
First video of yours that I’ve watched in a while. I’ve been so busy moving to a new state. I’ll have to binge everything that I’ve missed. When I watch your videos, I can’t help but feel so inspired to create. Thank you.
I used to sell shoes at Sports Experts (in Quebec). The one thing they told us was to never give someone more than three choices in shoes. Too many choices, a customer gets confused and is actually less likely to buy anything. Considering you had one option, I’d say you’re killing it! Lol. BTW, I’m going to be at Hypergrowth in Boston. Trade you shirt for shirt? I’m the guy that sent you the “best dad ever” shirt for Father’s Day :-) Peace!
I don’t agree with that, if I walk into a store to buy shoes and the salesperson starts showing me what they think I want, your more likely to lose me as a customer because I’m annoyed that some stranger would think they would know what I want, if I don’t know what I want walking in, I will in the next 5-10 min. I think maybe they misjudge their customers, it’s more likely that a salesperson being shown 3 different shoes they wouldn’t want and being a hovering salesperson is probably where they get their idea of that. Jesus, that is condescending. Sounds like some 1950s idea of marketing. Today’s customer is knowledgeable and knows what they want. Thank god there isn’t a Sports Experts around here.
We need more people on the platform like Shane Dawson and Casey Niestat people who tell stories and whose videos have values and purpose and aren't just pointless vlogs.
"The curse that is ambition always demands more." I also have these existential thoughts each day Casey, you are not alone on this one. I believe that only those who are aware and conscious of the gift we have on this planet are the ones who contemplate this in depth (or even at all.) The critical thing to remember is to really tune in to ourselves and know when to take that break we so desperately need sometimes. I too am happy and I also realize there is always room for improvement. :)
Why not stop wondering what and why - and get 368 turned into something great except a skateboard rink - turning out great product- and keeping your vlog going along nicely.
Existentialism is good because it shines a light on your priorities, but it can also blind you to them if you stare for too long. Glad you came out fast the other way on this one, Casey. I would say something like "Please keep chasing your need to create, because it doesn't only benefit you" but I'm sure you'll keep at it. And we appreciate it. x
It's called eudaimónia in stoic philosophy. Daimon is your inner soul also known as the “other” that is always watching you, the highest expression of yourself. Eu = good Eudaimón = Good soul If you had a good relationship with your soul (daimon) you had a sense of flourishing and well being. It does not matter what other people think about you, It matters what the daimon, the highest version of you, approves what you’re doing. Areté - The way we achieve a good relationship with our soul (our daimon). We can expierence Eudaimonia by Areté. In other words, do the things that the highest version of ourself is proud of doing, usually it is creating, contributing, helping, growing etc. The highest purpose of stoicism is to achieve Eudaimónia by Areté. Cheers from Amsterdam
Lewd Teacher I know this might seem wrong, but believe me Jesus is the answer. Think about this, literally everyone in the world is always looking to the next thing, always wondering why am I here? what is my purpose? Why do I always want more? Yet they’re always unsatisfied. The reason is because we were made to chase after something that is eternal. It makes sense that if you chase after something temporary you’ll only have temporary pleasure or satisfaction. If you chase after something eternal it only makes sense that your satisfaction will be eternal. That is why you should chase after Jesus. Think about this would it be worth it to be wrong. Would it be worth it to spend eternity in a place of pain and suffering. Because you have two options. Follow Jesus and have eternal pleasure and happiness, also following Jesus does not mean you can’t do stuff and have fun. Your second option not listen to this, take the chance that Jesus isn’t real and spend eternity in hell. I mean is it worth the risk?
venom2k2 you know for yourself the emptiness and frustration that comes in waves after you are finished... You know that there must be something more.. There is, my friend. There is
Wow I never thought of it this way, but I relate to how you talk about ambition in a big way. Feel like I’ll truly be happy when I achieve the next thing and it never quite feels to be enough. Thanks for sharing Casey!!
In my opinion, Hapiness are those valuable moments you lived during your journey in pursuit of your purpose. Your own craft from your searching of meaning. I want to start sharing this values in my recently started RUclips channel. Feel free to see!
I feel like it's not happiness we are chasing. That's a by product of it, because that's a feeling that is fleeting. Or it could be a feeling that's so intertwined with the feeling that I'm about to say that we really can't say. That feeling I'm talking about is of belonging. See, a feeling of happiness for me are the adrenaline rushes I subject myself to. Skydiving, going fast, public speaking, anything that raises my heart rate to high levels and elicits a feeling of being alive, which happens to be the exact opposite of my many years of feeling dead inside. Feeling of belonging somewhere. That you having a purpose is more of a long term happiness that you have while doing something and that that feeling of happiness seems to be caused by accomplishing something that you set out to do. I'm not sure I got out what I wanted to say correctly, but hopefully someone out there has an inkling of what I'm talking about.
I would sell it on ebay in a heartbeat. Is it cool? Yes. Is it worth more to me than the hundreds, or possibly thousands someone would likely pay me on ebay? Hell no.
Crowd control? Really? What's with the Draconian laws in NY? All those permits and stuff? Sheesh. De Blasio what's a piece of everything. Your little one-day opening secret is safe with me and 10m other people. ;)
actually...........since 2000, Republicans have been responsible for more regulations than democrats. also, it is clear you have no understanding of socialism means. go get an education.
You should see it in New Zealand, i'm in the process of opening a restaurant and there are tonnes of different permits we need to apply for which need renewing every year, must have spent about $6k (NZ$) on permits alone :(
Progress brings happiness. Growing, improving, achieving, makes you happy. Being self sufficient and able to provide for those you are responsible for bring happiness. I hope to have all that someday.
Alvi Elisabeth he has one it’s great he talks about his experience as a young dad and how it pushed him to be the best version of himself and so much more it’s on RUclips look it up :)
MMM true. Any hey Dan got hit by a car (or rather he hit one) but if the person hadn't driven away then he could've tried to sue and could've put the money towards 368... Dan is John Ralfio!
As an amputee I have encountered many existential questions during and after loosing my leg. I have come to see that the opposite of unhappiness is not happiness, but connectedness. There are three things I needed to connect with: 1. Love, for someone, something, and self. 2. Purpose - that reason why I want to get up and engage the day and 3. Meaning, which was to be found in the good that came from loosing my leg. This brought connectedness, which allowed happiness to emerge as a by-product of these experiences. Sharing my happiness brought me joy and a space within which to pursue new experiences. Thanks for an interesting chat Casey.
Just love it. When Casey makes his new videos of good old NYC! Lol. Real. Genuine,,speaks truth. Can't wait for the. New baby😊I be followed Casey long time,,love the camera footage,,scenic views, the crazy things he does, many fun travels, Candice and him such a great couple. My favorite video,,,a love story,,him and Candice. Priceless ❤️
Well, imo once you figure out how to be happy it’s about making everyone around you happy, and how they can be happy. And ultimately making the world a better place
I think happiness is very circumstantial.. in other words it’s very hard to have bc it’s based on what’s currently happening in your life... and if you no longer have or lose that “happy situation” your back to trying to find it.. my question is can anyone find true joy.. meaning your in a good place even when things aren’t good.. no matter the situation you have the confidence and optimism that even when things are good or bad you’ll find joy in your life.. that’s something rather worth chasing and once finding can be much harder to lose than happiness.
Casey it is totally clear when you realize you don't think of what life is about when you are happy, so the happiness is the answer, you just added some awesome stuff to make it better, thanks bru
Wow what a deep thought video lol. Just started vlogging and those existential thoughts are happening much more often now that I have so much time after finishing school. I'm loving the process of being a new content creator- I'm nowhere near where you are so I can understand why you're taking time to be grateful. I'm still on that 'chase' of fulfillment.
1 ) I bought a Boosted Board after watching your videos, and 3,000 miles, 2 boards and a OneWheel, life game changer 2) Can't believe you worked one of the best lines from the best scenes in movie history, into the vlog, A.B.C. 3) Got to find the video of you with the white sweatshirt, glasses logo, giving one to Marlon. Are they for sale in the store? 4) Recently reading about Buddhists, no expert by any means, but I think they say the secret is to stop "craving" If you experience bad, you crave better. If you experience good, you crave better. Try not to crave.

Can you please elaborate for me on why that would be advantageous to him? I'm ignorant about the 10minute mark.
He's got more than enough money already xD
Whatever
Yeah H3, papa bless
Coincidentally, I was just wondering why they were taking a break
Neal Bagai me too
People need a purpose in life. Happiness comes when you have a purpose. I think that's how it is.
it'd be so nice if 368 was that quiet the whole time, but lets be honest - its going to be worse than new iphone release's.
Thats cause evrybody loves casey no matter if hou have an iPhone or a Samsung lol
just the wise words i needed to hear today!!
And we appreciate it. x
Amen.
Steve Rogers I appreciate the validation, Cap.
Jerry Sanders Thank you so much man, as a small youtuber this really means a lot. x

I feel like I learn more with every Casey video I watch. Very educational and well spoken
It's called eudaimónia in stoic philosophy.
Daimon is your inner soul also known as the “other” that is always watching you, the highest expression of yourself.
Eu = good
Eudaimón = Good soul
If you had a good relationship with your soul (daimon) you had a sense of flourishing and well being.
No business licence = big fines in NYC.

I'm 32 and I don't even know what makes me happy anymore to be honest.
TheAndySan I'm 32, and I never have and I'm pretty sure I never will either...
Exactly
venom2k2 you know for yourself the emptiness and frustration that comes in waves after you are finished... You know that there must be something more.. There is, my friend. There is
When you find purpose, you will find happiness🙌
Wow I never thought of it this way, but I relate to how you talk about ambition in a big way. Feel like I’ll truly be happy when I achieve the next thing and it never quite feels to be enough. Thanks for sharing Casey!!
Hi can we bring back Casey niestat classics please

In my opinion, Hapiness are those valuable moments you lived during your journey in pursuit of your purpose. Your own craft from your searching of meaning. I want to start sharing this values in my recently started RUclips channel. Feel free to see!
so true
*oh. I should have waited to watch the entire video before booking my tickets to New York City. Oh well.*
Good Job lol
HAD to re-watch Caseys talk 4 times just to really soak up all of his wisdom for the soul
I love the podcast. Especially when Candice uses proper medical and anatomical terms 🤣
Mrs Space Cadet podcast is legit for sure!

I searched. Couldn’t find one😭😭😭
he was selling shirt with couple letters for 5$ why someone would not take more rofl:
I would sell it on ebay in a heartbeat. Is it cool? Yes. Is it worth more to me than the hundreds, or possibly thousands someone would likely pay me on ebay? Hell no.

Crowd control? Really? What's with the Draconian laws in NY? All those permits and stuff? Sheesh. De Blasio what's a piece of everything. Your little one-day opening secret is safe with me and 10m other people. ;)
That's what happens when people vote for Democrats and Socialists¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . (De Blasio & Ocasio)
actually...........since 2000, Republicans have been responsible for more regulations than democrats. also, it is clear you have no understanding of socialism means. go get an education.
You should see it in New Zealand, i'm in the process of opening a restaurant and there are tonnes of different permits we need to apply for which need renewing every year, must have spent about $6k (NZ$) on permits alone :(
Mr.Bubbles lol you must still be in college without a real job paying taxes. I can’t wait till you see how much the city deducts for taxes 😂
To be fair no one knew unless you knew and in that case, case closed

Progress brings happiness. Growing, improving, achieving, makes you happy. Being self sufficient and able to provide for those you are responsible for bring happiness. I hope to have all that someday.
Casey should do a TED talk
Alvi Elisabeth he has one it’s great he talks about his experience as a young dad and how it pushed him to be the best version of himself and so much more it’s on RUclips look it up :)

Does 368 remind anyone else of Entertainment 720 from Parks and Rec?
MMM true. Any hey Dan got hit by a car (or rather he hit one) but if the person hadn't driven away then he could've tried to sue and could've put the money towards 368... Dan is John Ralfio!
Hahahaha
As an amputee I have encountered many existential questions during and after loosing my leg. I have come to see that the opposite of unhappiness is not happiness, but connectedness. There are three things I needed to connect with: 1. Love, for someone, something, and self. 2. Purpose - that reason why I want to get up and engage the day and 3. Meaning, which was to be found in the good that came from loosing my leg. This brought connectedness, which allowed happiness to emerge as a by-product of these experiences. Sharing my happiness brought me joy and a space within which to pursue new experiences. Thanks for an interesting chat Casey.
another piece of great inspiration by our vlogdad!
I wanna go back to nyc so I can actually finally meet Casey

Surely life has to be about more than just *me* feeling happy. The world is much bigger than me.
But in the end, there is only you.
TheDeathopper nonsense
Well, imo once you figure out how to be happy it’s about making everyone around you happy, and how they can be happy. And ultimately making the world a better place

Thanks for this. I needed to hear this because I feel this has been me lately and I wasn’t sure what I was feeling.
I feel the real pure happiness ONLY when i make other people around me happy
HadjDaoud Metiaz that’s so true man, it all goes around
I think happiness is very circumstantial.. in other words it’s very hard to have bc it’s based on what’s currently happening in your life... and if you no longer have or lose that “happy situation” your back to trying to find it.. my question is can anyone find true joy.. meaning your in a good place even when things aren’t good.. no matter the situation you have the confidence and optimism that even when things are good or bad you’ll find joy in your life.. that’s something rather worth chasing and once finding can be much harder to lose than happiness.
its possible
Yes, I always called the word “peace”. Grounded and at one with the situation; good or bad.
Happiness is circumstantial only if you're placing you're joy in what's currently going on in your life.
We exist to have fun and make more people. That's it.
Don't need to have more people. It only brings more suffering. I'm sorry if I'm too blunt.
Explain to me why any animal exists, oh wise one
Don't think anyone created us, but I like your last statement: Human beings need purpose, or else they start to self destruct. This makes sense to me.
Casey it is totally clear when you realize you don't think of what life is about when you are happy, so the happiness is the answer, you just added some awesome stuff to make it better, thanks bru
This man clickbaits more than Jake Paul lowkey...
LittleBigSnake Official I’d like to think he does it for the irony

Wow what a deep thought video lol.
Just started vlogging and those existential thoughts are happening much more often now that I have so much time after finishing school.
I'm loving the process of being a new content creator- I'm nowhere near where you are so I can understand why you're taking time to be grateful.
I'm still on that 'chase' of fulfillment.
your content does and 2 mins into the vid exactly what I always think about
Casey had a quick pop up shop at 368
You probably have a thousand people outside the door now don't you?
1 ) I bought a Boosted Board after watching your videos, and 3,000 miles, 2 boards and a OneWheel, life game changer
2) Can't believe you worked one of the best lines from the best scenes in movie history, into the vlog, A.B.C.
3) Got to find the video of you with the white sweatshirt, glasses logo, giving one to Marlon. Are they for sale in the store?
4) Recently reading about Buddhists, no expert by any means, but I think they say the secret is to stop "craving"
If you experience bad, you crave better. If you experience good, you crave better. Try not to crave.
