7beers The way Part 2 juxtaposes the scenes of young Vito & Godfather Michael are a thing of beauty. The more Vito tries to save his son, the more he is, in fact, sowing the seeds for his ultimate destruction. There are at least 2 things one can say about this performance that qualify it as great film acting: (1) DeNiro was able to create nuance and depth WHILE NOT EVEN SPEAKING HIS NATIVE TONGUE. He speaks, what, four words in English the entire film? That alone is an incredible feat. (2) More significantly, when one considers how by the time Godfather II was released in 1974 the character of Vito Corleone had been so INDELIBLY linked to Brando in the public consciousness, what DeNiro achieved here was remarkable. Most actors would find it impossible to play this role and not impersonate a young Brando. But DeNiro doesn't do that here: indeed, he plays a young VITO! How can anyone follow Brando? Well, DeNiro essentially did. Incredible, incredible acting. Added bonus: consider how different this performance is from DeNiro's role in Mean Streets (released the previous year - 1973). Yes they're both Italian hoods, but the CHARACTERS are different. Corleone is calculated, whereas Johnny Boy is an impulsive hothead.

The O'Neal family is cursed. Tatum's mother, Joanna Moore, had a decades long drug problem so it's not all Ryan's fault. Her mother can be seen before all the problems kicked in as Sheriff Taylor's rich girlfriend in four episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show." She's really wonderful in that part and we can only wonder what if her life had taken a different turn.
Her problems were staggering - booze, speed, multiple marriages and multiple arrests, loss of custody of her children, the loss of three fingers, etc.
I still there there's a curse around Ryan O'Neal though.

I remember being rather shocked when I first learned of his tumultuous family and personal drama, after I’d seen Love Story and finding his screen presence so charming and likable. Felt so bad for his daughter Tatum and it scared me to learn the dark side of the famed Hollywood life. Then when I lived in Los Angeles in late 90’s and early 2000’s, I met Ryan O’Neil’s younger brother who I believe then was also an actor, who was dating Rebecca DeMornay. They were a very nice couple.

De Niro wasn't even there! I can understand why: he probably thought the three of them would dilute the vote, being from the same film. Think Marlon Brando. For 1954 he was best actor for On the Waterfront. Three actors from that film were nominated for best supporting: none won. In 1973, the first film, Brando again won best actor, again three actors, all playing his sons, we're nominated: again none won. I keep forgetting his name, but the one "son" not nominated holds a unique record in that every film i the which he acted was nominated for best picture, including Godfather III, released 12 years after his death. The guy who played Fred; always forget his name.
