Thanks for the video Nigel. As someone who takes a keen interest on the propagating side of things, this was great to watch.. I think I have annoyed my family numerous times by pinching cuttings for their gardens! I never appreciated that one could take such a large cutting so thanks for the upload...I will be experimenting with a few larger specimens soon. In a responsible manner obviously!
Nice video Nigel. I got one of these trees grown from the seed here in Melbourne Australia. I agree with you it's a very interesting tree. It's about year and a half old.Spring last year l chopped the trunk like you have done hoping to get more branches. But it ended up with a one branch again. The top part of the tree I chopped off I cut into three pieces leaving a single leaf in each piece and got rooted in water within few weeks. Those three are growing well in pots at the moment. I even got two leaves which got rooted in water and now growing in a pot. They haven't done anything for the past eight months though. But still green.very interesting tree. One of my favourite trees. Thanks for the video.
Yes they are very hard to get to branch, I'm thinking of growing it taller and cutting back in the middle of summer next year in the greenhouse. I hope to get more than one branch develop. There must be a good method, we just have to find it!
Mr. Saunders, you're right about getting a single-branched money tree instead of a 5-braided one as I have one right now. I've had it for a little over 2 years. In the past 5 months or so, a couple of the branches started to rot and the 2 other ones followed suit. The one alive branch left is slowly rotting & weakening as well. I wanted to save them, or even just that one alive branch that's left. I couldn't find any other videos out there on how to root a Pachira Aquatica. Your video showed to root it in soil, which I would try to do and see if I can keep if from completely dying. Thank you for your detailed video.
I was trying to get mine to be more but she and it just grew straight up like it didn’t miss a beat and kept getting taller so I was wondering how this is done too… I was wondering about notching it like a fiddle leaf fig maybe
Hi Nigel. I hope you’re well. You’re video on this plant is by far the most informative I’ve found so far! I’ve been searching for information on trimming the pachira aquatica but can’t find any information on a plant which only has leaves at the top but keeps growing taller. When the leaves fall off my plant, the stem just grows longer with more leaves but then they eventually fall off and the same thing happens again. Is it ok to trim it back to a shorter height, as them it will just be a stem? There is also another shoot coming out of the trunk and it is green but it’s been there for over two years now. Is there any way to encourage this shoot to grow? Hope you can help, thank you!
I have been searching for the answer to this as well. I want to know if I can trim it back to just a stem with no leaves or if that will kill it. Did you ever find the answer?
A quick question, in your experience, do these sprout from a trunk chop? Yesterday I found a braided tree that someone had thrown out and i took it home, one of the trees had died and was rotting; the others had no foliage at all and one had dried back quite a lot. I put them in some nice soil and cut away all the dead parts, I really hope to save at least one. Great little tree btw, looking forward to a new playlist ;)
5:18 looks like a very successful bonsai version. I'm wondering how it was achieved. It looks like there may be two or three little trees wrapped around a larger main one.
I saw one of these plants in a local store, I have only just got into Bonsai and thought to myself maybe I could make a Bonsai from it.. I'm now surprised to find that it is a common subject for the hobby. Going to repot in a shallow pot and wire the branches. Hope it works. :)
I've recently been gifted a braided tree. I think I'll train them outwards away from each other, and cut them for rooting once they're woody. They range from pencil to pinky finger sized, and I'm growing them under a new set of fluorescent lights in my sun-starved apartment. Can I safely get away with pruning down to a single leader on each tree? Thanks Nigel, great show you've got.
Some people un braid the trees to get some nice twisty trunks for bonsai. Unless the trunks have fused together, I would keep green foliage on every trunk within the braid.
Plz help i got two pachira poted and want to repot but i don't know what kind of soild i should used in India(mizoram state) please can you tell me which kind of soild i will used
Hi Nigel. I just separated my braided tree. Two of five trunks died so I’m going for separate trees. I don’t have bonsai soil so I used orchid mix with a top layer of moss for now. Do you think this will do for now? Do the trunks die off from too much water or lack of it? This is my third plant.
Hello Jim, probably too much water and not enough drainage, but it's just a guess! Yes, if the one trunk gets root rot from too much water it will die off. If the plant is under watered, it can also die, but they do store water in the trunks and this is less likely. An orchid mix should work, just be sure the pot drains well and the trees are kept in a good sunny spot. Avoid a drip tray under the pot that will fill with water.
There will be another one coming soon, I do have a play list for every tree, here is the one showing the progression of the money tree.... ruclips.net/p/PLQouTWwmTQoyGFJDJj1ybWKKFzdm3UJwo
Hello,I got a money tree as gift, from the time I received it it has some yellow leaves because according to the buyer it stayed for sometime out in minus 8 .I really dont know what should I do now with this plant? how many times water it or how much fertlizer it is needed to stay alive and what shall I do with the yellow leaves???? would you please tell me which video I can find this information? Thanks in advance
Money trees like a porous soil that drains well and lots of water! Here is an article... homeguides.sfgate.com/care-instructions-money-tree-plant-50174.html
The new growth will come out a light green. In time it should darken to a nice dark green. If it does not, try adding some fertilizer to your water and it should help. Follow the recommendations on the fertilizer, too much is as bad as too little!
Wendy Smith The new vigorous growth shows the tree is liking the treatment you are giving it. To keep the growth small and compact, you would have to water and fertilize less. I like to keep the trees growing strongly while you are developing the tree. This new growth can be cut back to the first leaves to keep the tree smaller in height.
Scouts you help me on this ? The condition on my money tree is very bad! I have a small one, almost a sapling, but the stem is very loose out of the soil! My soil has rocks on top, very small ones, but the stem is starting to turn brown and get all mushy! Do you have any tips? I put it in shade and gave it more water!
The bottom half of the tree is dead. The only chance it has is to cut off the top of the tree above the rotted section and plant it in soil as a cutting. Be careful not to over water the tree, just mist it occasionally to keep it humid. Keep it in partial shade until it begins to grow again. Good luck!
My money tree 's lower leaves are turning yellow, I thought I overwatered it bc the roots got smaller than thaey used to be. They were growing through the bottom of the pot but not now. The soil is peat based, and there's no new growth on it. What do I do?
hi. im reading that finding a 7 leaved stem on a money tree is similar to finding a 4 leaf clover. is this true? if so, what would a money tree dominated by 7 leaved stems be compared to? i have a tree that, currently, has thirteen 7 leaved stems. is this super rare? your videos are very explanatory & informative. thank for sharing your knowledge and tips! so helpful.😊
Can i grow my Pachira in just water? I purchased it in a small pot filled with water from a bonsai nursery. It has been two months and temperatures touching a low of 48 deg. F. There are new sprouts, but some leaf tips are turning brown and some leaves are losing their green color. I have kept it indoors, With some ambient light and fluorescent lights. So should I be patient(spring is 2 months away) OR pot it and put it near a sunny window(south facing or north?) Any help?
Many trees can grow in plain water for quite some time, but eventually the roots will need more oxygen and nutrients. Many cuttings are started in water and they need a transition to get used to growing in soil. I would re pot your tree in a free draining bonsai mix now, but have a tray of water under the pot that will keep the soil wet at all times. The roots on the tree will see little change in this wet soil. Gradually over a month or so, let the water level in the tray under the pot reduce. After about a month the roots should be used to a normal watering schedule that keeps the soil damp, but not wet. I have a video on watering and fertilizing that might help also..... ruclips.net/video/gXIIpxUqxdY/видео.html
you said it likes lots of water but another video that guy said it needs water only once a month and does not need direct sunlight. you said it needs sunlight. totally confused, I am.
Mearyeaurng I watched another video w same instruction. Also to only use purified water. 🤷🏽♀️ I just purchased Money Tree today am in same boat as u. How is yours doing?
I'm very certain that it likes filtered water and NOT direct sunlight. Tab water will kill it. I believe tab water and direct sunlight killed my first plant before I watched these youtube videos. Recently, when I received a new plant I left it in my office next to the window with INDIRECT sunlight or minimal sunlight they seem to sprout with greenish leaves. :)
I don't think that tab water will kill it. I use tab water for all of my plants (doesn't matter if house plants or my bonsai) . I've had my Pachira for 3 years now, I think. I don't grow it as a bonsai, just as a nice house plant and it usually gets sunligt from the morning until noon and it's doing really fine. But I always let the soil dry out completely before I water it again.
You will need to prune the tap root off and then see what roots develop from the wound. Hopefully you will get a nice ring of radial roots form. After the new roots are strong enough, you can remove the other large root.
Did you do anything special to let it root from the cutting? When i try getting a cutting to root either in water or soil, they seem to never grow roots and just die off, similar to what you described happened to your Kapok cuttings
Nigel Saunders Then what defines a plant being a bonsai? i've alway thought it meant a miniature tree, Also would u recomend me ordering a japanese sakura cherry blossom bonsai
You will have to let it grow and then cut it back, keep repeating this process to get a short tapered trunk. The trunk will get thicker naturally, but the tree will get very large!
Hey Nigel, it's me that eleven year old again. I have a question about money trees because I have one. How exsacly do you style a money tree because mine is not braided which is good I love it but im having trouble styling it. Thanks for awnsering my last comet it means alot.
They are a very hard tree to style! It is very difficult to get branches, but if you keep trying to equalize the vigor when you do get branches, it should slowly develop a canopy. I have cut mine back in a recent video and so far nothing has developed yet. I'll keep posting updates!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone thanks for the information it helps alot.i got two more bonsia the other day there doing well. One day I might end up like you with a thousand bonsai trees in my house. Again thanks
The only technique that I have found is to let the branches grow until they are woody and then prune the tree back hard. It is a very difficult tree to get branches on as a bonsai. The trees seem to want to grow only one branch as the leader and that's it!
I didn't know they could look like that, wow! I unbraided mine after having them for years, but they were already all wonky and curvy. Really didn't know what to do with them and just let them grow in weird directions, but I think I might just prune them back to get some nicer stems.
I've never grown one from a seed, but I found a site that might help.... forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/2175113/how-to-grow-pachira-aquatica-from-seed Good luck!
Congratulations on a new bonsai! I hope you get enough branching in time! What are you thoughts on starting a bonsai directly in a bonsai pot (with bonsai soil) instead of a training pot? It's how I started my Ficus tree from a cutting. I hope the trunk will thicken eventually because now it's very slim. I think clip ad grow technique will give it a good taper. Thank you for your videos, it's always nice to see your beautiful work.
Your ficus will grow fine in a bonsai pot, just keep letting it grow to a bush and then cut it back. Over the years of doing this, you'll end up with a fine bonsai tree! Be careful to re pot before the roots become a solid brick in the pot. You will need to repot every 2 years if the top is left to grow wild.
Yes this is correct. In its normal habitat with normal humidity and heat levels the water it receives in the wetlands/swamp environment is survivable. But in our home environments it is much drier and not as hot, at least not usually. You could probably keep it moister in a greenhouse of course. However mine does not like to be over watered at all, hates it and almost has died from it. Dare I say they “thrive on neglect”.
Hard to believe, but I don't have one! I've always wanted one too, but I've never seen one at a reasonable price. I only see them in box stores for 65 dollars or more. If I can find one, I'll make a video for sure, thanks!
They can get good root system. I'm going to try and keep it warm and humid, but let the soil dry out each day, hoping it will stimulate root growth. It will be in the greenhouse for the summer. I'll keep updates on the trees progress.
The name "money tree" seems to refer to a story of its origin, where a poor man prayed for money, found this "odd" plant, took it home as an omen, and made money selling plants grown from its seeds.
Hi! I just purchased some money tree seeds and I am wondering if one seed produces multiple trunks for braiding or do you plant multiple seeds. Also when do you begin braiding? Thanks!
So much contradicting info on these. Most say little water, low to medium light, no direct sun but then we see a huge tree in direct light. Maybe the small ones we buy for indoors are like wild animals born in captivity lol. Either way I just purchased my 1st one yesterday, I'll see how it goes

It will develop new branches from being cut back, but it's a risky process. If conditions aren't right, the tree just withers away and dies.

Sounds good, they are a difficult tree to create a bonsai with, but not impossible.
is there an update on this money tree
Coming soon, it is getting very large!
how do you germinate pachira from a seed?
I've never grown one from a seed, but I found a site that might help....

This site tells all...

M y favorite plant but i don't have much luck in growing them
is a money tree the other name of horse chestnut tree ?
It is a different species. The money tree is tropical and the Chestnut tree needs winter.
Very nice tree
Says they live in a swamp but you must not over water them ?
Yes this is correct. In its normal habitat with normal humidity and heat levels the water it receives in the wetlands/swamp environment is survivable. But in our home environments it is much drier and not as hot, at least not usually. You could probably keep it moister in a greenhouse of course. However mine does not like to be over watered at all, hates it and almost has died from it. Dare I say they “thrive on neglect”.
anyway you could do a video on how to trim a fukien tea, or Chinese sweet plum ,thanks
Hard to believe, but I don't have one! I've always wanted one too, but I've never seen one at a reasonable price. I only see them in box stores for 65 dollars or more.
If I can find one, I'll make a video for sure, thanks!
thanks for your response . I also got a sageretia( sweet plum) if you happened to have one you can make a video snout thanks
by the way I am surprised you don't have a fukien tea I was able to get one for 15$ if could believe it ,ok tganks
i repotted my money tree a few days ago and i thought i had ripped off all of the roots.
They can get good root system. I'm going to try and keep it warm and humid, but let the soil dry out each day, hoping it will stimulate root growth. It will be in the greenhouse for the summer. I'll keep updates on the trees progress.
great vid thank you
Hi Nigel.why is this called a money tree? Is there any particular history about it?
The name "money tree" seems to refer to a story of its origin, where a poor man prayed for money, found this "odd" plant, took it home as an omen, and made money selling plants grown from its seeds.
Hi! I just purchased some money tree seeds and I am wondering if one seed produces multiple trunks for braiding or do you plant multiple seeds. Also when do you begin braiding? Thanks!
I believe you need to start separate seedlings and then when they grow tall enough, plant them together and braid them.
Very nice
Thanks, It has grown well and will need to be re-potted this winter.
Iam going start a money tree bonsai
Iam going use trim grow u use on yours trees more natural .
Sounds good Chris, happy growing!
Maybe it’s cause there is NO ROOM FOR THE ROOTS???
Like it very much
Thanks for liking!!!
Wow very nice me too i have money tree bunsai
So much contradicting info on these. Most say little water, low to medium light, no direct sun but then we see a huge tree in direct light. Maybe the small ones we buy for indoors are like wild animals born in captivity lol. Either way I just purchased my 1st one yesterday, I'll see how it goes
Here is a video from the largest grower of these....

From my experience, his information sounds correct!
I bought one today because it looked like marijuana. My favorite plant.
Happy growing, but don't eat the leaves!
Yes, braided trees are no good. They don't do well. 4 out 5 died and left me with one. Surviving one is doing well.
Hopefully the one that is left has some interesting curves to it!
So That's a Chestnut.
It's still growing well, but it's very difficult to get good branches!
@@TheBonsaiZone Good to know, thanks Nigel, and thanks for the Pictures of it in it's Native Soil, I've Never Seen a Chestnut Before, I'll Repot the Braided one I got as a Christmas Gift in the Spring.
Share post - tq.
very amazing
The tree is growing strongly since this video, almost time to prune it!
