Discord Scams Are Getting Smarter

Currently there's a new wave of "scams" running around, involving friend requests. You may have received a friend request from someone with the name "Check My Bio", where they promote some sort of Discord server or scam in their About Me. The weirdest part is that they all have "no mutual servers" with you, so how do they find you? In this video, I dug into how these "scammers" do this, by contacting one myself. So, enjoy, and be aware to not fall for such scams :)

To grab your attention, these "friend request spam accounts" usually involve some type of "you got doxxed" aura to them. They are all trying to social engineer you to join their server, or get your account hacked by "verifying" to something. Just ignore those.

Yeah, they "evolved" from advertising servers with "check my bio" only to getting your attention with "you got doxxed".

When you add someone through the search bar ("Add Friends"), you're calling the "relationships" endpoint (Discord's codename for "friends"); that request to Discord's API has as "body" a "username" and "tag". However, if you append "/ID" to the relationships endpoint, you don't have to provide the username and tag, just the ID. Example: /relationships/1235678912456789. This isn't accessible via the GUI (Graphical User Interface) that Discord has, in fact it's blocked if you put an ID in the "Add Friends" bar, however, every time you click the "Add Friend" button on the drop-down that appears when you click on a user profile, you're adding the user by ID. (You can see how this works via the Inspect Element > Network)

aight thanks man, lmfao, i was panicking for a moment 'cuz i got randomly friended by a dude with a display name of 'CHECK MY BIO YOU IDIOT' and i checked everything, no there were no mutual servers or friends, and their bio had a server link. i didn't click it tho. it was enough to make me figure out that it's a scammer.
