  • If you have instability in the spine caused by Spondylolisthesis or degenerative disc disease, the Spinal Fusion surgery will fix the problem BUT it will not fix the the root cause of the problem.
The outcome of the surgery is largely dependent of the REHAB process and how the body is treated after the surgery.
In this video, I will share with you my rehab plan and process that I would follow post the spinal fusion surgery, including tips on how you can prepare for it before the surgery itself.

Have you heard on a Tops Device procedure. It’s new in the US and is a lumber fusion alternative. Basically replacing the facet joint with an artificial one. Allowing for normal range of motion of the spine. Very very interesting as I have been trying to avoid a fusion and the tops device seems the best the only surgery I have considered.
I just discovered your channel today and I am soo greatful. I will be incorporating what you have to share into my journey. Maybe I can avoid surgery. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Hope he answers- would love to hear more from him or you or others. I had a L4-5 fusion and didn’t really have a choice or would be in a wheelchair, and now of course L3 is getting strained and I have a TON of pain and would love alternative healing answers. That surgery was truly horrific

I had a fusion at L4 L5 on June 28 2024 because of dealing with Spondylolisthesis for 12 years and serious sciatica pain and numbness in feet. I was doing really well with recovery until after 10 weeks was walking 2 miles a day and the next morning I was in extreme pain and could hardly walk due to pain on the left side of lower back. I was told I was overdoing it and to rest, ice and medicate but to still walk around the house and not be idle? It’s
been 4 days and still in pain? What did I do just by walking???? Hope you can shed some light on this for me. I am a 63 year old women who is very active and now this??? I can’t cry anymore!

@@annmariezarzecki5787 I can certainly relate to your experience as it has been my experience for the past 8 years also. I’m not sure if you have tried the core balance training program but after doing it for the past almost 3 months I can say my spine has been getting stronger and more stabilized than ever since my symptoms started and for the first time in years I feel there is hope for long term recovery. It’s definitely been helping as long as I continue to put the work in

I have had L4-S1 operated on. L5S1 is fused. L4/L5 is connected by flexible rods.
The disc at L4/L5 is looking nice in MRIs but, 6 years on, L3/L4 above is looking dark on MRIs.
It's a great point that I will need to work to keep that segment healthy.

I'm scheduled for a posterior TLIF of L5-S1 in October because I cannot walk or stand more than 5-10 min without having to sit or bend over at the counter to relieve the pain. The disc is completely gone. L4-L5 is bulging as well but only minimally pressing on the L5 nerve root, so he isn't worried about that one right now but I'm sure it's going to be an issue in a couple of years unless I can save it. 🤦🏼‍♀️ AND L2-3 & 3-4 are mildly bulging so I need to try and save those discs as well from getting worse. I am not in shape due to not being able to exercise for several years. I'm going to go through some of your exercises to see if I cannot strengthen my core somewhat in the next few weeks. I'm worried about recovery and already have SI joint issues from the back pain affecting how I walk.
I looked over the Core Balance program. Is it really $99/mo?

There are so many people who has spondy even with severe grades and without any symptoms. Other people who have spondy and disc bulges at the same time and sometimes the disc bulges could be what is couse the pain.
So you saying anyone who is been diagnosed with spondy must have surgery?

    • @CoreBalance
      @CoreBalance  7 месяцев назад

You’re right… Absolutely not. Relatively few people with a spondy need a fusion, and we effectively treat spondy without surgery on a regular basis. But as mentioned in the video, sometimes it’s necessary.

@@CoreBalance because my L5-S1 disc is completely gone, spondylolisthesis where my vertebrae are shifting and pressing on the L5 nerve root, and posterior spinal stenosis, I was advised not to see a chiropractor because of the never issue. It's so hard to find one that knows what they are doing. After the fusion, I probably won't ever be able to see a chiropractor 😢

Just wanted to pop in on this latest video to ask you that while dealing with an SI joint dysfunction would it still be recommended to do the monster walk and the resistance band sidewalk as well? I've been doing the bridge now for a few days to which I've already seen an improvement I've ordered myself the SI joint belt just because I think right now I definitely need that support but just wondering when you think would be a good idea to start throwing in the monster walk in that resistance training or strengthening? Thank you for offering the knowledge that you have to all of us that truly adhere to the things that you say in order to gain some of our life back truly it's priceless and with everything in me I say thank you!

    • @CoreBalance

Hi Karina, thank you for your kind words and support! The monster walk and the sideways resistance band walking can be great exercises after the SI joint has been stabilized, which we teach in the program. 😊

    • @ryanpeeblesdpt

Hi Karina, I'm so glad the advice is helping you out, and I really appreciate your kind words and gratitude. It's for these reasons that I keep going. To your question, the banded lateral walking exercise is not so stressful on the SI joints if you maintain active glute hip abduction/external rotation force against the band (without that force, the band is pulling against passive structures which could include stressing the SI joints). It would be a good exercise to experiment with early on in the Stabilization phase. It can potentially even help to stabilize the joints in a functional way, which is a win-win. Had I thought of it, I'd have mentioned this exercise in the recent live streams. As far as monster walking (forward/backward) with the band, this will be slightly stressful on the joints, but would be an excellent one for early in the "Reintroduce" phase - maybe even the very first exercise. It's slightly more stressful than normal walking because the band actually resists the forward motion by the hip flexors as well (which pull on the joint). So you'll want to make sure you've got a strong core connection for this one. Hope that helps!

@@ryanpeeblesdpt what you said absolutely resonates without a doubt I did try to do the lateral resistance band but I think just where I am at right now it's just too soon so I'm looking forward to getting the SI belt to help with the stability while I work through the pain I'm just getting my body to understand that it's okay I'm not trying to hurt it anymore LOL what a painful lesson this has been but truly a remarkable Journey that's changed me forever and especially how I Loo at fitness. Again I can't thank you enough so many videos to go through so much amazing knowledge and advice that I look forward to following very strictly until I can get back up on my feet hope you two had a beautiful Valentine's Day together

I had fusion after 2 failed surgeries. I was still in pain afterwards. But after a year, a physio taught me about chronic pain and I could finally recover.
However, with hindsight, I should only have had one surgery. The first one was to remove part of a ruptured L5S1 disc. That had to come out because it was actually causing paralysis in my leg.
But after that, I did not rehab properly. I had a few good weeks, then massively overdid it and went into a spiral of chronic pain.
If I had my time again, I would have followed a program like the CBT course and restored the stability I needed.
Instead, I had a whacky "dynamic stabilisation" of L4-S1. That left me in even more pain because the kinematics of my lower spine were wrong. The fusion was necessary because of the second surgery.
My fusion has held very steady but I did develop SI joint pain later. Both times from a traumatic event. But I suspect that if my lumbar spine was bolted or fused together, those events would not have damaged my SI Joints.

Hi Michael, it's wonderful to hear that you found a physio who taught you about chronic pain and that you've been able to recover! It makes sense that your spinal fusion procedure may have been a contributing factor in the development of the subsequent SI joint pain. Spinal fusion surgery aims to immobilize and stabilize the spine by fusing two or more vertebrae together. However, this can sometimes lead to altered biomechanics and increased stress on adjacent areas, such as the SI joint. It sounds as if you have been through it, considering your discectomy, then fusion to address the issues arising from the first procedure, and to top it all off, SI joint pain. Hindsight is always 20/20, but we believe there is still much you can do to alleviate stress and strain throughout the body by addressing muscle imbalances in the here and now. By addressing these imbalances, particularly by strengthening the muscles around the spine and pelvis, our main focus areas, stability can be restored, reducing the risk of SI joint issues. Addressing these imbalances can improve joint alignment, reducing abnormal stresses on the SI joint and promoting better overall biomechanical function. There is hope for a better tomorrow!

Go to a physiotherapist with a lot of experience of rehab after spinal surgery. You cannot figure out what to do by watching videos on YT I'm afraid.
