Finally, someone who shares the importance of good drawing. That has to be the basis of anything we undertake if we are to strive for a better outcome in our projects.
Yes - I feel like the internet tends to imply that you can create incredible art just with a 10 minute tutorial, and while I have had some results like that, I got very frustrated after a while that I had no clue about composition, about depth of field, about depth etc.
What a gem of a video, so valuable! From the story of 15-year-old Louise (I can relate to her!) to all the reasons you gave for drawing ... I wholeheartedly agree, it is so important to keep honing your drawing skills. Thank you for making this video, Louise. Loved it!
Louise thank you so much for sharing your process. Watching you draw is mesmerizing. I’m a member of your patreon and would gladly pay extra for some drawing tips, exercises or classes. Thank you!
Wow Louise. The drawing by your 15 year old self was amazing. You were clearly always destined to be an artist. But it’s also clear that you’ve invested a lot of time and energy in becoming better. Thank you for inspiring me and so many others.
You really have done a good job of convincing me to sketch more….at least squeeze in one little sketch a day. I’m self taught in that I’ve had no formal training and just recently found beautiful artists like yourself who have taught me so much. I’ve done well I think, winning some first places and even a couple “ best in show”……those have been some of my most treasured art moments indeed. But I am always so amazed at how much there is for me to still learn and I’m beginning to realize that the learning never stops! Thank you for your most excellent help along my journey..it is so soul satisfying.🤗👍🙏🎨
I love to hear about your back story, the other day hearing about your career as a teacher, about your graft over 4 years to perfect watercolour. I have been frustrated with my drawing - but mainly because i havent really had a methodical approach, and have tried ro draw lots of different thibgs without working on one technique (e.g perspective, depth, shape etc). I am trying to draw every day, and am attending a beginners drawing course once a week (although that has been frustrating as we dont seem to be doung any technique, rather just mark making!).
I've been convinced for a long while that i need to learn to draw to be a better water colorist. I am late to the art game so I'm going back and forth with both for all the four reasons you have mentioned. I don't sell my art but I want it to be good. Thanks for encouraging me to push on.
THANK YOU for validating that tracing can be a valid part of an artistic process. For folks not skilled in drawing by hand, it can be an avenue to feeling capable of creating art while developing the drawing skills. This is not to say we want to recreate an entire photograph, but it can certainly help with accurate proportions and scale. This was such a good video, I appreciate your videos for helping me to grow as an artist. p.s., I am working very hard to learn not to overwork my paintings. 🙂
I agree completely that I also need to improve my drawing skills. That is something I’ve made a priority recently..and then, you posted this video. While in art school, over 47 years ago we drew everyday, I know that’s no surprise. But looking back I realize how important it really was in improving our skills as artists. It is a skill that constantly needs practiced. You are a wonderful instructor and always share how you feel about your own art journey. That Louise is what is inspiring us to keep traveling on our own journeys. Thank you, Louise
My watercolors are suffering because it seems I lost my drawing skills😫I always loved to draw but now I feel lost, I need to begin to draw and practice ever so much. I wish there were fine arts classes I could take here in the US, i live in Rhode Island. I am extremely excited to watch this video, thank you ❤️
Thank you for this video and the importance of drawing. I just sold my first watercolour painting yesterday and was thinking of getting back into the practice of drawing. Not only for the practice but for the meditative aspect of it. I too had a similar experience when in grade school. I drew a picture of the Gods that created the Japanese islands for a Social Studies class. My teacher asked to keep it and he framed it and put it up in his classroom. I was very proud of it and occasionally think about it. I do tend to give away my paintings but I think now I am going to start selling them. I have learned so much from your videos and I think they have made me a better artist. Thank you!
Thanks for saying it is ok to trace the basic outline of something as a time saver! I was taught that tracing was a terrible no-no! But, it really is ok. Love your videos.
Not to undermine the importance of drawing because you have inspired me to figure out why I'm avoiding drawing, however,, I just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed your "outtakes". They made me laugh and lifted my spirits. Thanks Louise! ❤
Louise, your drawings are as beautiful as your paintings! I certainly can see why drawing will improve painting skills! Your Cutie Pie is adorable! I do hope you will share your bird drawings as you go along in your sketch book! You do create such stunning birds! ♥️🌹
Hello Louise, so glad to come upon your video. Thank you for your encouragement and tips. From a child right up to my teenage years, I never had good art teachers , nor encouragement from family. Art was never given importance. Thanks for being that teacher.😊
Love to draw birds too. I would love to watch you draw the birds you choose to draw in your sketch book I am sure I will learn and even possibly get better myself at drawing birds. Hope you will share as you draw in your sketch book. Thanks for your Chanel.
Thank you so much. I just recently discovered you...I love to draw and watercolour paint...I am a rusty amateur however you've inspired me...yes please do more drawing videos - love what you do!
You are a terrific master Louise . Every time I watch your video, I just tell myself to wish if I could ever be as talented as you are. You never fail to impress. Lots of love. Your student for life, Sid. 💗🙏🏼
Those drawings are incredible. I'm so glad you brought up the importance of learning to enhance one's drawing skills. It truly is super important for painting as well.
Drawing was also my first love also. Seventy + years later I still enjoy the process. Thank you for sharing your journey and explaining how important this facet of art is and how it relates to our watercolor endeavors. I recently gave my grandson, aged 11 several sketch books and his own graphite pencils as he loves to come to Grandmas house to draw. ❤
Excellent video - I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. I was also 15 in 1982 :) Your drawings are exquisite. I also love the work of Joseph Zbukvic and John Lovett and have been lucky enough to attend workshops by them both in the past. I try to draw and/or paint every day and have a growing library of sketchbooks. Thanks again :)
Aw Louise, you haven't deteriorated in the least! You are an amazingly patient and authentic artist and teacher. Your story made me think of my best friend who let our high school keep many of her gorgeous soapstone carvings. The nerve of some people. Very glad you kept that piece for your own posterity. ❤️
I believe this video on YT will perhaps resonate with many more of your followers than other of your watercolor-centered ones, especially those of us in our, er, mature years 🧓 as we have all spent at least a few wasteful years doing something other than art -- I know I have, and it wasn't just a few. My story is a lot like yours, and I was even older than you when I was able to re-ignite my art journey, so I completely empathize with this entire video, word for word. I also loved to draw before I loved watercolor, and I hope you show more drawing-themed videos here and on Patreon. Where you find the time for all these, I will never know, but somehow you do it all!
Thanks Vickie. Me too- life gets in the way and you need to earn a living. Drawing/painting often gets pushed aside. We also didn't have the internet when we left school so a career as an artist was a pipe dream for me. I plan to post some drawing tutorials on Patreon when I can. I need an assistant. So much of the work I do could be done by someone else and that would give me more time to draw/paint and voice over videos.
@@LouiseDeMasi I feel that “wasted time” pain. Every time my husband brags to someone about how wonderful a watercolor I’ve done is, in the next breath he’s asking what’s for dinner (he won’t cook or do housework, long-standing complaint of mine), and after that, if I DO escape to my quiet “art” room and demand silence, I still am interrupted by life - grocery lists, texts, dear lonely husband wanting to show me a funny video, adult son who can’t afford to move out yet because of this economy and he wants to see what I’m painting… How can you explain this NEED to people who don’t feel it? I’ve tried but finally realized they don’t get it. And for you it’s worse because your family depends on you financially and as a mom too. Sigh. When it gets too much, I always turn funny and positive and say a prayer of gratitude that God was generous enough to give me these artistic and musical talents, so I should shut my mouth and quit complaining about them and use the humor talent He gave me to deal with my family before I slap them all and end up in jail, where they don’t let you paint at all!! 🙄😂😂
Oh my,,I loved this! You are so precious,,,and I seriously paid attention to every word. And had a good chuckle at the end with you and Carl! Way to go! Thank you for helping me get back on track with my art, I love birds and can't wait to draw some now! Onward!
Wonderful reminder and info for all. I can still hear classic watercolorist Tony Couch (In a workshop I took with him) saying, "Paint it any color you want! Just get the values right!" In fact, instead of signing his books I owned (that he authored) with a simple "Best Regards", he wrote, "Remember the Values!".
Love this video, Louise. You are absolutely right about the importance of drawing. I'll have to go back to my sketch books and re-teach myself what I used to do, and then practice. Our lives get so filled with "stuff" that we don't take the time to practice....at least, I don't. My mom used to draw (or sketch) little birds and other animals, every day......and she was very busy. I need to follow my mother. I still have her little sketches; because I know how much pleasure she got in doing them. She also dabbeled in oils, acrylics, watercolor, charcoal and pastels. There definitely was an artist in her reaching out to the arts. Love the sweet bird and your darling grandson.
Wow!!! 😀 I did learn quite a few things by watching you draw the Sparrow I will try some birds in my sketchbook it has been a long time since I drew an animal or bird. Thank you for posting this.
So true I needed to hear this! I love watercolor work, but I probably jumped into it without Drawing Skills! I will change that, and draw and draw and draw! Thanks for sharing your Words! Karen Dirmish
What a cutie ❣️Beautiful drawings, great idea, I am going to actively draw more. Absolute commonsense to do so, it definitely improve my skills, thank you 💖
Thank you for all the motivation and inspiration, dear Louise 💗 My drawing and painting supplies have more travel miles on them than I could count; from home to cottage and back, and winters in warmer climes - and over many, many years..... But did I paint or draw much??? Sadly, no 😬 If I had one drawing for each mile they have travelled, just imagine the skills I would now possess!!! And now that I am almost a dinosaur, you can probably guess how I feel about that 😞😂 BUT, today I dust off a sketch book and promise to put it to good use, Louise!!! Thank you for your fun, friendly and enlightening instructions, always encouraging us to try under your guidance!!! You are a true gem, and I love your works of art 💗💗💗
I have been looking for inspiration and I keep coming back to your channel for several reasons. First, I love your paintings. Second, your voice and personality calms me tremendously. I’m interested in painting birds right now. In fact, I bought some baby chicks yesterday to add to my flock. Two of them are Barred Rocks. They are identical to your chick painting you did a year ago regarding mixing black. I was looking at taking some physical watercolor classes, but there are few in my small town. So I’m going to just bite the bullet and become a Patreon so I can take classes from you. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos. You make it seem effortless though I know it isn’t.
Really enjoy watching your skills Louise. Your grandson's portrait is beautiful. Keep preaching the strength of drawing! Took a portrait class many years ago a fellow artist was teaching. We were chatting one day after class and admiring each other's work when she looked at me and said " I love drawing so very much , but it is SO much work." We both laughed and laughed, because it is....however, it is extremely satisfying work! Have saved a lot of them over the years and am so glad I dated them. I get them out every few years and enjoy seeing how much I've grown.
I had a similar experience at school, when a teacher wanted one of my sketches of a cat. My art teacher advised me what to charge, which was much more than I would have asked for, and explained to me how my art had value. Luckily the other teacher didn’t buy it in the end (he probably thought he’ll get it for free or much less, and I also didn’t like him very much) so I’m very happy that I still have my sketch. It will always be a reminder to not undervalue my art, both regarding its economical as well as emotional value.
Hi The _unpopular teacher_ wanted to *buy your drawing* . What a *lovely compliment* But _Instead_ you decided to keep the illustration to yourself. Isn't it wonderful to bring joy to others (Your image made that unlikeable teacher happy) Instead you have the illustration tucked away .
Wonderful Louise. Another reason for a good result: really love the subject you are drawing. I’ve noticed that when I’m doing something because someone asked me to do so, but it is lacking my own feeling with it or inspiration, the result is never quite what it should be. I can see that you love that sparrow and that, if course, you love your grandson. ❤ Maybe it’s even so that some subjects are better done in a fine medium such as graphite than in water colour because of all the fine details that give the extras?
Wonderful drawings! This was motivating. I rely too much on tracing outline sketches as my drawing skills are poor. I believe this is so because I don't practice and prefer the painting process. You have definitely not deteriorated--you are growing and developing your skills and you are so generous in teaching us!
Thank you for this inspirational drawing video. You’ve inspired me to reach for my sketchbook more often. Know you are super busy but hope you will do more of these drawing videos. I couldn’t quite catch the name of the sketchbook?
Hi Louise, I liked your video very much and your b/w pictures turned out great. I started with colored pencils many years ago and now I paint with watercolor, gouache and other media.Maybe it's time to draw a picture with pencil again! Thank you for your beautiful video with insights from your life! I enjoyed it very much! Best regards from Germany Claudia : )
Thanks so much for sharing your art journey with all of us, your drawings are outstanding! I have been doing more ink drawings inspired from your ink tree content. I am excited to spend more time developing my drawing techniques.
I have been thinking I should start drawing lately, too, but have only done a few. Thank you for sharing this video, it gives me more motivation to get going!
That was very inspiring Louise. I agree - although I have to admit to not doing enough drawing. A few years ago I found an old copy of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" at a thrift store. I had good intentions to work my way through its exercises. I will get back to that thanks to your encouragement. Your grandson is a cutie-pie. Hope you get to see lots of him.
Thanks Louise, I really appreciate this. Being so new to art I've decided for now watercolour needs to take the backseat whilst I learn to draw and sketch. I'm resolved to draw one hour a day every day this year. I have developed a Sienfeld chain and keen to see how far I get before I break it. Hopefully I can watercolour some time every week. I am also working on painting with just black and white for the next few months to work on tonal value. Take care.
Spending more time drawing is one of my goals this year too Louise! I loved your drawings in this video and will now go and track down my toned paper! Take care 😊
What a beautiful sketchbook! I would love to learn how to make one of these, especially the doors, and take it to France when I go in September. Have you ever thought of teaching a watercolor class that focused on architecture?
Your Drawings are as beautiful as your paintings. Everything u say makes perfect sense. However, I can't draw. But I have taken on board what you have said about learning more about tonal values to improve my paintings, to make it look more 3 dimensional. That I can work on, thank you for sharing.
I absolutely loved this video and watching you draw. The few things I have managed to sketch in detail I absolutely loved. But I rely on tracing. Will try to find more time to sketch. Thank you for the supply list, too. I don’t have many drawing supplies.
This is a great video Louise - you may have heard me mention before that several artists on a TV series I watch here are trained on the 7 year painting course at the Art School in Florence - for the first year they are not allowed to use paint or pick up a brush - they are only permitted to draw and one can understand why, especially from watching this video; it is going to be one I return to - often! What a special and precious little grandson you have - the perfect model!💞 Can I ask was that a cosmetic sponge - pink - that you used for blending? Also, what was the the mechanical pencil you were using - that had the quite thick lead? Thanks!
Louise that Sparrow is so beautiful that I want to have a try , Can you tell me the pencils and other products you are using...many thanks from France .
Yes, I would like to know, too. I looked at the supplies list under the video but I don’t think the different pencils and the smudge stick are there. Right now I blend with my finger which is messy.
Thank you Genevieve. Some of the supplies I used are listed in the description. I also used a 4b and either a 6b or a 7b graphite pencil I think. I used my hb mechanical pencil on the eye because it was much finer.
Love this tutorial though I felt a little overwhelmed with the number of reasons to hone one's drawing skills cuz I didn't write them all down. But I do have the overall understanding that detailed drawing will significantly help my paintings improve (as well as my drawing of course. I just bought a pad of tan toned paper. I look so forward to digging in and really paying attention to details which I do anyway, but can always use additional practice. Thank you so much for this one. XOXOJANE P.S. I now have 3 of your T-shirts, Cool.
I really enjoyed your portrait of grandson. What did you use to with paint brush graphite powder or paint? Did you add any water? Definitely thinking of joining patreon.
At 1.37 you say *I used to love drawing* (as a youngster in march 1982). So Now in 2023. . Do you find drawing... _boring_ ? .... Opaque? Thank you. Mr p decker. London village

Totally agree Micah- it is a lot of work- but very satisfying. Thanks so much.
Hi
The _unpopular teacher_ wanted to *buy your drawing* . What a *lovely compliment*
But
_Instead_ you decided to keep the illustration to yourself.
Isn't it wonderful to bring joy to others (Your image made that unlikeable teacher happy)
Instead you have the illustration tucked away .
Maybe it’s even so that some subjects are better done in a fine medium such as graphite than in water colour because of all the fine details that give the extras?
Wonderful drawings! This was motivating. I rely too much on tracing outline sketches as my drawing skills are poor. I believe this is so because I don't practice and prefer the painting process. You have definitely not deteriorated--you are growing and developing your skills and you are so generous in teaching us!
Thank you very much Louise.
I am excited to spend more time developing my drawing techniques.
this was really helpful! thank you!
I'm so glad. Thanks Monique.
I love your work! You are such an inspiration! Thank you!
Thank you so much Janet.
Lovely channel. Thank you!
I agree❤
I have been thinking I should start drawing lately, too, but have only done a few. Thank you for sharing this video, it gives me more motivation to get going!
I'm glad. Thank you Yumi.
Enjoyed this so much🤗👌. Your art teacher was right, a work of art🥰. Thanks for this, Louise.
Thanks so much Linda. 😊
Thank you Louise.
You’re welcome Susan. Thank you.😊
That was very inspiring Louise.
Wonderful! Thank you Mary. I have that book too It's a great resource.
Take care.
Great video Louise. Have commented on it on Facebook. 🌹
Awesome. Thank you Di. 💕
Again I’m so impressed. You make it look so easy.
Thank you Ginger Pie. ❤️ 😊
Spending more time drawing is one of my goals this year too Louise! I loved your drawings in this video and will now go and track down my toned paper! Take care 😊
Thank you Sarah. We all need more hours in the day- so much to do! 💕
What a beautiful sketchbook! I would love to learn how to make one of these, especially the doors, and take it to France when I go in September. Have you ever thought of teaching a watercolor class that focused on architecture?
Thanks very much Kelli. No I haven't.
Excellent drawings Louise, Thank you for sharing. I have learned a lot to help me and will practice regularly xx
Wonderful! Thanks so much Amanda.
Your Drawings are as beautiful as your paintings. Everything u say makes perfect sense. However, I can't draw. But I have taken on board what you have said about learning more about tonal values to improve my paintings, to make it look more 3 dimensional. That I can work on, thank you for sharing.
My pleasure Paula. Thank you!
Very Nice technics & skill
Thank you Lal.
I absolutely loved this video and watching you draw. The few things I have managed to sketch in detail I absolutely loved. But I rely on tracing. Will try to find more time to sketch. Thank you for the supply list, too. I don’t have many drawing supplies.
I'm so glad! Thank you Nancy.
Absolutely love the bloopers lol. Thank you
Glad you like them! Thank you. 😅
Beautiful Louise. So match talent.
Thank you so much Christine.
Always wise words.
Thank you Jon.
Thanks for sharing
A pleasure Amita. Thank you.
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
My pleasure Veronique. Thank you.
Thanks!
Which watercolor bushes should I use for my watercolor paintings
Thank you very much Jane. I hope you find plenty of time to draw. 💕
I really enjoyed your portrait of grandson. What did you use to with paint brush graphite powder or paint? Did you add any water? Definitely thinking of joining patreon.
What sketch book did you buy?
Thank you Jana. The sketchbook in this video is a Kunst & Papier.
At 1.37 you say *I used to love drawing* (as a youngster in march 1982).
So Now in 2023. .
