I know the Trojan War has been done to death, but I’d love a retelling that focuses specifically on Andromache after the war and winding up with Helenus, or Helen and Menelaus falling back in love with one another in Egypt. Or one focusing on Achilles’s half-sister, who I think has one line referencing her in the Iliad?

I remember hearing word of Narcissus rejecting not only Echo but also a fellow named Ameianias. I could see him and Echo bonding over how much Narcissus freaking sucks.

Very surprised you didn’t pitch the idea of an Outlander-type fantasy novel where a young Greek mythology expert is transported back to the Trojan War and falls in love with Diomedes 😅 I totally second the Hypsipyle and Dido retellings (not so sure about whats-his-name eating his arm).

some greeek myths I want people to retell would be
    1. the Titanomachy, it's the start of the age where most greek mythology starts, but it's always seen in the background, as set dressing, the titans were already dealt with so why tell a story about them? because it would be cool and something we don't see done. from Cronos swallowing his children to the gods dividing up the universe I'd like to see that story
    2. The Oresteia, a modern retelling would be nice to see, maybe a courtroom drama/comedy revenge soapopera of the tragedy with all the messy parts. Some things would obviously have to be changed, but I think it would work
I'd also like to see a story where Athena isn't portrayed as a villain or at best a cold uncaring bitch. I get that she isn't always portrayed well, but a lot of the terrible acts she does are as Minerva in Ovid's stories, not actually Athena. I'd like a story where she can be complicated instead of one dimensional.

Natalie Haynes’s “The Amber Fury” is the Oresteia!

I've started coming up with notes on how to eventually write a Calypso retelling! also Hypsipyle and Sappho would be an interesting dynamic. and Erysichthon all I could think of is a vampire who refuses to drink blood and tries drinking/eating ANYTHING else to survive

  • @cassidygrundmann

These are literally all SO amazing, Erica!! I think the story of Hypsipyle would be wildly different and more brutal/direct than other retellings but it would be incredibly interesting to read about (especially the part about the killing of all the men). And the story of Echo and Narcissus, and Io's myth would be heartbreakingly beautiful. I actually believe that Io's inner thoughts and feelings when she is wandering around as a cow, would be a fascinating addition to the story (even though her walking is probably not a big selling point for the story - but it would provide a really good opportunity to develop her character). Thank you for putting these together! I am now (not so) patiently waiting for someone to pick one of them up!

Thank you for this channel! I've really enjoyed your guests and it's great to see so much energy and interest in this amazing source material. I'm hoping you keep at this because your channel has so many great videos. (Iliad v. Odyssey, for example)
I was wondering if anyone had done a good work up with Cleon of Athens? I know he's not a mythical character, but similar to Wicked, I've wondered about a man who so enervated Aristophanes as to give Cleon his full attention; Thucydides had much to say, as well. But at the same time, we have this perspective of him largely through his opponents but we know that he was also very popular with a large segment of Athens. Just seems like there's a lot there to look at even if it's not necessarily as entertaining as some of the other characters.
    Thanks!

Love the suggestions and especially the idea of an Echo and Narcissus retelling!
I only ever seen one modern update to Echo’s story and that was in the Class of the Titan’s series on Amazon. The episode is called “The Last Word” and the plot line is that Echo kidnaps one of the main characters who happens to be the descendant of Narcissus.

Describing Erysichthon eating his own arm made me think of Junji Ito manga and now I want a full on proper mental horror retelling of this that doesn’t shy away from how insane you would become from having insatiable hunger

Ooh, these are all great picks! Personally, I’d like to see something told from Hephaestus’ point of view. What it was like to be raised as he was, his yearning for Hera’s love & approval, his disastrous marriage to Aphrodite, etc.
