Great video as always Morten, the reason the server started being really loud half way through the update (shush, we are filming here lol), was the iLo 4 update, the iLo 4 controls all the fans and temps, when it got upgraded it rebooted and normally when you restart an iLo adapter it ramps all the fans to 100% as it doesn't know what's going on and this is also the reason the iLo 4 just said "Success" after upgrade as it had already been rebooted. Glad it all worked out in the end 😎😎🙌🙌👍👍
Hi Morten, thank you for your video! According to the Dell firmwares and drivers - they are available for download without an account or subscription. The same as Lenovo ones. There is a Dell Platform Specific Bootable ISO which is an alternative to the IBM/Lenovo BoMC (Bootable media creator) with the difference that you are not choosing yourself which server models to include in the ISO - it is an ISO per server base model (620, 720, 730 and etc). As this said the BoMC is much more flexible and customizable. Thanks and I am waiting for your next video!
generally you can use the iso's for multi servers for RX2X and so on, the only real thing that might not get updated would be the bios, another rule is do not run this over iDRAC to update servers esp if there is an iDRAC update pending as you could just loose the virt CD/DVD/etc in the process making it slightly dangerous in bricking whole server or network card or even the PSUs hell you can even update using the iDRAC LifeCycle controller to update your server, thats a nice touch (=^-^=)
Awesome video! I am doing SPP update via USB on a server that is on the other side of the planet. This video helped me to get a good grasp of the task ahead. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Hello Morten, watching this video helped me a bit, as I might be a bit newbie around these landscapes, my machine is a gen 9 DL360, followed your instructions, digged the internet after the SPP with the right checksum and all and so forth... as I thougt it could be a firmware issue, ended up finding the right SPP, used the right USB key toolkit from HP to make the damned SPP USB key to try and update the machine... did it all, at least I feel like so, tired! My issue is I cannot connect remotely to the machine. The machine is connected to the network. I have it running linux and can access it through ssh and run my experiments as intended. The thing is, I'd like to have the iLO option working, for remote management and all its benefits... Entered several time into iLO configuration utility, reset it and entered IPv4 address, mask and subnet... machine iLO 4 is now the latest (so I think) 2.82. When set for no DHCP and add my own IP it shows it on Post. When set to used DHCP, it only shows Mac Address. Even tried to setup access through LOM, instead of iLO port, attached cable to port #1 (I felt iLO port might not be working...), still can't access iLO... at the end I kinda feel like I might be doing something wrong... you have any idea? Thank in advance
You have kind of tried everything I would have suggested :-/ I would connect a laptop directly to the ILO port (to rule out anything else. Make sure the laptop and the ILO IP numbers are in the same range. like 192.168.1.x Make sure SUB mask is right,, like 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.1.1 I would also disable IP6 just to rule that out. Ohh check the ILO port if the pins are okay... Best of luck.
Thanks very much as recently got a cheap ML350 G9 to start a homelab with and this video helped immensely with updating the firmwares (was still running on original 2014 version) - now I have the degraded iLo/NAND error to look into but hopefully shouldn't be too much of an issue if can't be fixed.
Hi, I created a hp account and download the spp without problems, greats from Germany and thx for the information about spp 😊 i used the iso image in Windows Server 2016 over html without problems 😃
Hi Morten, I see that you've been spending/working for some time to boot and get the SPP working finally. Anyway, I see that it still have shown some "weird" stuff like the "not secure" screen, which also I haven't seen that kind of issue, but as suggestion for the future, in case of have problems with booting SPP ISO via iLO, just upgrade first the iLO firmware separate way, then use the iLO to boot the SPP ISO and proceed with the rest of firmware updates manual or automatic, I know the iLO may be sloooow to boot ISO's and get GUI available to start the upgrades but at least you save time, instead of going around with USB keys into the servers, by the way, I've recently involved in firmware upgrade a complete HP C7000 chassis full of blades with G10, G9 and even G8's and I simply got to iLO of each blade and do the firmware upgrade via their iLO interface, much easier and time saving. Just to add, I'm not an HP fanboy, but I like their equipment, is more cheaper for me to buy used for my homelab :) Best regards
The SPP iso used Firebox to display the progress. Because this is still a old ISO he uses the intern certificate is expired. Resulting in Firefox telling the page is not secure. The newer SPP doesn’t have this problem.
I remember doing stuff this like on a prod server and there's a moment when things don't look like they are working and you're hands start to sweat - Stuff like this can be stressful (!!) when its a prod server !
Hello hoping you can help me out here I have a HP Proliant DL360 G6 I bought new replacement SAS HDDS but my server won’t read them when I log into the ILO it says that the drive firmware needs to be updated but I don’t know what to look for :/
Dell is sooo much easier to update firmware. You can get the bootable ISO or individual components in both exe and bin formats for whichever OS you are running. I only got a pair of Gen10 servers in 2018 for VDI to house nvidia tesla cards. Can't register the system with support because it requires a certificate and when trying to use our company wildcard certificate, it said one if the fields was too long and can't use it. I gave up.
Hi , from the last week i am trying to setup this server for my home lab and i am getting a lot of problems, Intelligent provisionin- F10 option doesnt comes up in the start, i downloaded 2.x from HPE , Getting error "ERROR FLASHING THE NVRAM" , i upgraded ILO but still no luck , now i am thinking to upgrade SPP , but the problem is now i have 32 GB USB , that USBKEY software is not allowing to make it bootable, i am new to the server basically from network..can you please tell me exact ISO file to download when u open the link for lenovo to download the SPP from there. i dont see ISO file there .Thanks
I successfully installed the SPP , but unfortunately even after that it doesnt show Intelligent Provisioning -F10 Option. i need that to format my disks, it does show the total disk i have , any help would be apprecaited. Thanks
I believe you can disable the F10 to show up,,, in Bios,,, but hitting the key randomly should still work,, and loading bios default setting might be a good idea.

That's quite stupid from HPE, as the firmware only is of any use on HPE servers, so by denying it's downloading, they are only going to piss off their own buyers, that could very well just decide to buy another brand the next time they have to choose servers.
