The kettle hat were first produced in England around 1011. A type of helmet made of steel in the shape of a brimmed hat. The Kettle hats were very popular with foot soldiers in Central Europe during the 10th and 15th century. It gained its common English language name from its resemblance to a metal cooking pot. These hats, although cheap, were not admired because they were considered only suitable for infantry and did not have the high grace or extravagance of a knightly helm like the bascinet or great helm. When steel helmets reappeared in World War I, the kettle hat made its comeback as the British Brodie helmet, as well as the French Adrian helmet. These kettle helmets were also used in World War II by the British, Commonwealth forces.

Reasons why I love kettle helmet
1. You can use it as a kettle
You can take a wee wee in it too, just like what you can do with wwi a wwii helmets

The kettle hat is my favourite of the medieval helmets. It's versatile, it was popular among commoners and knights alike, it allows visibility and breathing, and it looks cool (most versions of it anyway).

Future archaeologists are gonna have such an easy time with 2019 era armour because it’s mostly made of polymer fibers (kevlar, cordura, etc) which won’t disintegrate for thousands of years
isn't kevlar cotton?
Rhodesian Wojak no, cotton is just cellulose, while kevlar is a synthetic fiber. Cellulose far too weak to make armour (try shooting a shirt or a block of wood, you may find that they’re not very resistant to bullets)

Kettle helmets are still being used to this day though being phased out of almost all militaries and called something different. There's a reason they have lasted the test of time, versatile, doesn't impede hearing but still protects the ole noggin, brim provides some shade so perfect for desert warfare, comfortable to wear, doesn't impede breathing or vision... A salat or other visored helmet has a huge drawback, incredibly limited visibility and hard to breathe in. All that extra protection wont help if you take hits from a Warhammer to the head because you didn't see it coming, and having less fresh air means you will have less stamina which will make you more vulnerable the longer the fight lasts. In a 1V1 fight that's not a huge issue but in thick of the melee with thousands of combatants... I would choose a kettle first.
Glad to see you got one for your harness.
The long visor all around can also neutralize pretty much any downward cut on the head.

People put helmets to the back of there head till the modern age. It was common in the British army in WW1 and WW2.
2 Reasons , if you hunker down it protects you when you lower your head , and if you are prone you can aim your rifle properly.
If you use a German stahlhelm you dont need to. Extends to the base of the head. Fans out at the brim. Like modern kevlar.
Andrew Joy which is why most modern helmets downwards parabolic cut on the back so you can do all of those things without putting it on the back of your head which nullifies its ability to protect the forehead
Aint Jack then explain why in photos of soldiers during the gulf wars *ALMOST* none of them are wearing them on the back of their heads, while being perfectly capable of doing so. I think most soldiers would be willing to have an aching neck over a bullet or arrow embedded into their skull
@Aint Jack Can a modern helmet stop a bullet? I thought it was about shrapnell and silly injuries
@Aint Jack General Quarters , General Quarters ! All hands man your Battle Stations ! Goes to my GQ station as lookout on the bridge wing , dons steel pot and tilts it back so I can look through my binoculars .
There's a logging supply store here that sells broadbrimed kettle hats for logging and wildland firefighting; basically a hardhat of metal instead of plastic. Though a lot of the modern ones are made of composites, most of the metal ones don't look very out of place at the Ren Fair when the paint is removed.
Edit: By the way, one of the best things about this style of hat is found in the name - there were many mornings when one of the guys on my crew would use his to boil up some water for coffee. True then as it is now.
'You're all hat and no kettle'
Aside from accuracy, it's an excellent sample of the metalworkers art. It's as beautiful as it is functional.
Now, this type of Kettle hat I love, Ralph. I don’t like the regular kettle hats. They’re just weird looking but the Italian type is amazing. I’m not Italian but I’m proud to look like a Sicilian- Italian.
Kettle hats rules the world historical armies.
Yes! Something to watch!
For a kettle hat, thats a beauty
When it comes to the original, it seems like someone was torn between the functionality of a kettle hat and the fashionable panache of a sallet for their personal retinue, and that is what the armourer came up with. Stranger things would have happened (Lantern Shields for one examle)
Certainly looks good.
Nice video Raph, really enjoyed it.

Metatron just looks super nice even though he's wearing armor. Reminds me of medieval art where the people are always smiling even when they have a sword through their head.
Think of how far we’ve come in just a few centuries. They used to use this sort of stuff hundreds of years ago, which was before gunpowder was made, crude oil was discovered and engines were made, and before companies started making tanks, humvees and cargo trucks, as well as planes that could be used to drop explosives on enemy camps and compounds.
it's a good helmet, going to look forward to watching more of it

The armor smith I was looking at for Winged Hussar armor (Eryk from polish hussar supply) is out of a workshop for the time being so I'll probably consider Craftsmen of Taurica if they can make Hussar armor, it would be great to have it at a cheaper price too since it's only half armor and Eryk charges it for roughly the same Metatron is paying for his full plate armor. I'll just get the clothing and maybe the wings or cloak separately from polish hussar supply.
Gonna need a horse too!
@@louirudy670 Oh yeah lol, I don't really have enough space to ride a horse on my property but once I join this Polish living history group near me they'll probably have a horse I can use. It would be kind of awkward wearing calvary armor without a horse.
This helmet gets bonus points for the name alone.
Its also clear that an Englishman created it. If it were french, who knows what its name would've been.
"Hat-helmet. Because it looks like a hat"
Mein Gott, please tell me no one, other than me, has said this before.
Perhaps knights wore kettle hats as a "marching helmet"? That is when moving long distances outside of the battlefield. More comfort and better vision. Slightly less protection than a helmet covering the whole head and face, but still some degree of protection if ambushed.
Pretty much every helmet would fall under the category of "marching helmet"
@@proudtitanicdenier4300: No, because a visored helmet would not ventilate as well for marching, nor does it offer the same freedom of vision to spot ambushes along the roads.
@@sevenproxies4255 And yet almost every helmet design was used by marching soldiers.
@@proudtitanicdenier4300: Because most couldn't afford two different ones. So some opted for more protection rather than comfort and vision.
@@sevenproxies4255 The whole point of a visored helm is that the visor lifts up for better vision and ventilation. Why lug around a second helm when you can have the best of both in a single helm?
Great video.
hi Metatron looks like a Military Helmet of today. i wore this Type of helmets for Days. And the relaxed style of wearing is
really more comfortable ( so long the officers it not seeing :-)
i have also another question
What swords and armor using the Swabian ( Swiss) knights in the battle of civitate 1053 , against the Normans?
William of Apulia says this over the Swabians : " There were proud people of great courage, but not versed in horsemanship, who fought rather with the sword than with the lance. Since they could not control the movements of their horses with their hands they were unable to inflict serious injuries with the lance; however they excelled with the sword. These swords were very long and keen, and they were often capable of cutting someone vertically in two! They preferred to dismount and take guard on foot, and they chose rather to die than to turn tail. Such was their bravery that they were far more formidable like this than when riding on horseback
@Aint Jack Typically on their head.
This man needs way more views per day
Nice hat bro. :D
Looking at this kettle helm, it's easy to see how the morian developed.
The long brim kettle hat looks very aesthetic. It was my favourite in mount&blade crpg mod.
A bit similar to the asian/japanese "jingasa" hat which the ashigaru used i think.
Also Raiden from Mortal Combat wears one :)
craftsmen of taurica is great. i want to order a maciejowski kettle hat soon.
Hey Rafaello , thank you very much for sharing all your formidable knowledge !!!
Question if i may; What do we know about the ottoman jenissaires? what made them so good? for sure not their funny hat i guess...?
Best regards!!!
Knights from Aragon and Southern France wore these helmets, as they had a preference for it. Especially during the late 12 to the mid 14th century, as many opted for the Sallet instead.
Kettle helmets with bevors are very nice
I prefer the long brim but I love the more modern style as well.
I just love how The Metatron uses some music from Dragon Age Origins. Also, gotta love the kettle hat! I mean, this thing looks like a proto-morion helmet

When I watched Avatar the Last AirBender, I saw Earth Kingdom's and EarthBender's helmets, this helmet gave me those same vibes.
What a coincidence. Actually a classmate from my school times name was „von Kettlehat“ the German version though.
Eisenhut? If so that's also a one of europe's most poisonous plants that used to be somewhat ubiquitous in middle european culture and stories. The name could also come from "Eisenhütte", which would've been a place for smelting iron
@@majorfallacy5926 oh no no it wasn’t Eisenhut, it was Kesselhut or a similar equivalent to kettle, it’s been years so I can’t really remember.

I am a manufacturing engineer, and I have been studying historical manufacturing for almost 2 decades now. I would like to know if you know the exact location of the original kettle hat?
I see a line down the middle on the front picture of the original hat that could be indicative of higher carbon steel, or more highly contaminated steel.
I have long suspected that some of the original craftsmen dealing with plate may have taken two sheets of steel and ground up cast iron or chunks from a bloom, placed the chunks/grindings at the weld site to lower the temperature of fusion.
And this helm looks like it was treated in just that manner, certainly this could change a small portion of our history books if it is true!
I would greatly appreciate knowing whom has it!
Both Stahlhelms and Brodies were based on variations of the kettle hat.
Hey Metatron, I'm not getting your videos on my recommendeds like I used to. I was unaware of this video until 2 days after it came out, and there are a bunch of recent videos on your channel that I was unaware of too.

Mr.Metatron, what do you think about Spanish-made armours, knifes and swords (from Toledo)? (They're very famous in all of Spain, what does the expert have to say?)
I was thinking the same. A morion would be a nice addition, but I guess we can't have it all.
Most items from Toledo nowadays is cheap tourist ware.

what
In my country, motorciclists wear their helmets like in the greek statues. It can get really really hot here so people never wear them properly.
I would like to also point out, at least in the US where we still have rather heavy fire helmets, especially leather helmets, a lot of us wear them in a relaxed way when standing around on scene
Captain here - please fix the echo :D Love the vids
Do you have any recipes for cooking in your kettle hat?
I should remember to actually go on Patreon to watch all that Patreon content........
If you want to use a helmet for actual combat, I advice an inner helmet like in a modern one. Merely lining/padding will give you lots of concussions when hit, and you will end up sounding like an old boxer.
