- 10 MILLION PRODUCED IN 1941 BY 6 DIFFERENT MAKERS,THIS ONE HAS THE INSIGNIA OF FG FOR FIRE GUARD, LATER IN 41 IT WOULD BE REDESIGNATED FW FOR FIRE WATCHER.,HELMET MADE BY PRESSED STEEL COMPANY,COWLEY,OXFORD, WHO MADE METAL PANELS FOR MORRIS MOTORS.
I remember the United States civil defense helmet - it was solidly built and it would one size fitted all!
yep, a much more solid helmet
A very timely video! I picked one up at a car boot last weekend for £15! Not something I would normally do but you know.... I couldn't resist...
lucky!!!
Hi C J, quite interesting I used to have one many years ago I was given one when I was a young lad cant remember what happened to it.
it probably got chucked out!!!,a lot did
Great review. I've seen these helmets quite a few times but can't say that I've ever been tempted to buy one.
i figured i should get an example to replace all those i have never kept!!
Not quite 50p when I was a kid but remember them being well within pocket money range.
Remember trying one on, thinking it wouldn't have filled me with confidence in a air raid.
Suppose 'owt's better than nowt' as they say...
true,
they look nice
Very informative Cj…🤘🏼🏴👍….
thanks
Alot of good info. Over 50 helmets and thats one Im not familiar with in the U.S..I have a few u.s. civil helmets usually cheap $10-$20. They look more like a "deep dish" dough boy helmet.
Do you still answer questions on older vids or just time for current
videos..? Thanks CJ
hi, i have seen the US defense helmets but never really fancied an example, yep, i try to answer all comments to any video, past or current..
I was offered one of them helmets not so long ago. It had been turned in to a flower pot .
probably a better use for the helmet!!!
I old german farmhouses you can sometimes find german helmets with a welded piece of tube to fix a pole. So the helmets had been transformed into a Gülleschöpfer, a tool to fill ,csttle piss' into the ,Cattle piss barrel' to take it to the fields.
@@brittakriep2938 ha!! nice, i have seen such items on e bay!!
Great review CJ....did you get this off eBay?...if so I think I saw it up for sale. I always found it odd that these helmets turn up on ebay/fairs etc and there never seemed to be any photos of people wearing them..even now!. Your review has made me think I should really get one....it does make sense however that if they were a stop gap and only made in 1941, you don't see a lot of photos of them. One for the home front bit of the collection..
Cheers CJ 🙂🙂🙂🙂
it prob was, i got it off e bay...prices are as low as £29, nows the time to buy a good example, as prices will go up.
@@historicmilitaria1944 cheers🙂🙂🙂🙂..yeh I reckon i will get one🙂🙂🙂
@@steelhelmetstan7305 how many helmets you up to now stan
@@johnshanahan8477 39/38 can't remember...ha ha..cheers 🙂🙂🙂
Nice Zuckerman helmet mate
thanks
Very interesting and helpful, Did they wear a civil defence armband if they was aware of CD?
Thanks, originally around the year 1940,armbands were issued on a local issue, but by 1944 they were widespread...
@@historicmilitaria1944 thanks also do you know anything about wardens helmet stencils? I am wondering if hand painted are fakes or if they was all stencilled? I have found a wardens one and it is hand painted but doesn’t look new
@@Tmilitaria difficult to say...its a minefield when it comes to home front helmet markings....there was a good book out in 2019 called home front helmets...it cost around 60 quid then and it's the bible on the subject..problem is in the early days helmets issued locally to villages etc would be hand painted but also stenciled, particularly in the case of factories where multiple helmets need issued...its difficult nowadays identifying a home front helmet cos just as all armbands have been replicated,so has every home front helmet transfer and stencil.
@@historicmilitaria1944 thank you, I have a picture of the helmet if you could clarify if it’s an original painting / stencil, since I cannot post pictures here do you have an email? Thanks.
@tmilitaria hi,I dont
Does any one have any info on a manufacturer L.B. I have one with this marking with a may 1941 date directly under the LB mark
cant find any reference to an LB maker
@@historicmilitaria1944 I tried to look it up but is says it was an unknown maker
@@joshbatterham1781 must admit, ive drawn a blank on this maker
@@historicmilitaria1944 thanks for trying cj
Look up Zuckerman Civil helmets. Marketed as civilian private purchase steel air raid precaution helmets to the general public during the phoney war and first London blitz, under the auspices of the philanthropist , Sir Solly Zuckerman.
Not one of the best helmets some people like them not for me anyway thanks for showing all the best john
true, its not a good design
