Both are the best beat um ups on there respected consoles so I supposed it depends if your a snes or megadrive fan. Although I own both and Sor2 is better.
Yeah, that looks like a pretty solid list there. Interestingly, there's more SNES beat 'em ups on that list I'd rather play again today due to how well the hold up, with Turtles in Time on SNES being a highlight, but Streets of Rage 2 is right up there too. There might be a few Genesis examples missing that I'm not noticing that aren't there, but I can't think of them just now. I think Ninja Warriors for SNES really should be up there too though. And probably Iron Commando on SNES as well (just wish it wasn't so frikin' punishing). PS. I tend to think of "beat 'em ups" with swords and such, like Knights of the Round and King of Dragons or Golden Axe, more as hack 'n' slash. That reminds, the Golden Axe games on Genesis aren't here (since you count them as beat 'em ups). Neither is Alien Storm for that matter. PPS. I just have to say that I personally think the manual double directional tap method for dashing on SNES is much more satisfying and actually intuitive than holding a button to dash. The action of pushing twice in the direction you want to dash just matches much better to the action you want to perform than holding an arbitrary button down imo. So I think the SNES actually has the edge there. But each to their own.
Great work. Quick question: Why does your Batman Returns video image capture look so smooth and blocky? It looks good and all...maybe even better... just different.
rushing beat syura is a great beat em up with multiple paths and beautiful super power screen, the peacemakers is english version is a watered down version dont play that version. and you miss the ninja warriors again on the super famicom/snes
The Rushing Beat sequels are pretty good, I just wouldn't consider them as being among the best. Same for Ninja Warriors, it's just a bit too slow. If I'm going to play a strictly 2D beat 'em up, I reach for Comix Zone or Mutant Apocalypse.
What an excellent list of games. I've searched youtube for lusts of beat em ups and they are usually are common repeats or sometimes other genres are mixed in. This list is nice and focused. It's unbelievable a game like comix zone was made one and done. The look alone is highly marketable to me.

It's a bit of a gray area but I'd say Comix Zone still counts as a beat 'em up, the core gameplay is beating up bad guys while the other gameplay elements are secondary. Someone suggested The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the SNES, but that is a case where I'd say it's more of a general action game than it is a beat 'em up.

Oh man, this takes me back! I loved the first two Streets of Rage games (never could get to Mr. X in 1, but I could beat 2 with effort) and my sister and I used to beat Hyperstone Heist every morning before catching the bus to grade school. And every time I see some of these, especially Final Fight, I think of the version called Final Fight LNS Ultimate, where you can play as several dozen characters from numerous games and punch your way through not just the first Final Fight but other BMUs.
My favorite was the death and return of superman on the snes, baught that game bran new when it came out and took me over 10 years to make it past the 3rd level... hadn't played it in almost 10 years pulled my super Nintendo out of a box, it still had that game in fired it up and blew threw it in about an hour... it was such an emotional moment! I also liked the Simpson's game, I don't know which one it was but I remember playing it for years at our dollar movie theater!
I really enjoyed SoR1 back in the day. It came on the 6pak cart and that was cheap enough for my summer job budget. #2 is fantastic as well. Comix zone is one of my favorite genesis games. Such a cool game. I'm not sure I can enjoy the double dragon series as much as I did as a kid (master system). Those games were a little barebones when compared to the later 16bit stuff. The capcom belt collection is pretty cool. I'm experiencing all the Nintendo releases that I never got to play. Really glad I imported it. Gonna get in some good co-op when my brother comes to visit 😁
SNES definitely got a lot more beat em ups than the Genesis did, and quite a few of them are really good, with some mediocre ones thrown in. Genesis got a few subpar beat em ups too, but has more good than bad.
