  • It's an age-old question, which 16-bit console is better? Is it the Super Nintendo (SNES) or the Sega Genesis. While we may never know which console is best, we can talk about the individual genres that help make us fans of the SNES and the Genesis. In this episode of the Big Retro Show, I'm going to be talking about which 16-bit console had the best beat 'em ups.

A note to add about Comix Zone, its also a puzzle game.
The reason that busting obstacles takes health is because the game hides items and secrets to get passed them without injury.
For example, making sure you bring Roadkill to sniff out hidden items in every room is essential. He can find a bomb before the metal door in the beginning of stage 2 allowing you to blow it up without hurting yourself. Or the hidden hang switch in level 3 opening a gate for you.
It rewards exploration and intelligent problem solving.

Sorry buddy. It isn't even close. Ninja Warriors was the best beat'em up of the generation. Not only was the enemy variety better than in most games. The 3 characters played drastically different from one another with far larger move sets than any other game too. Batman Returns is also amazing. As far as 2-player goes, Final Fight 3 and Knights of the Round are amazing and it is a lame and contrived copout to not include Turtles In Time, as if the inferior Hyperstone Heist cancels it out.

The SNES could display far more sprites on the screen than the Genesis. That, along with the ability to display larger sprites is the reason the characters were typically much larger. You can have a debate about which is better, fewer characters that are larger or more characters that are smaller but your claims are objectively false. Ninja Warriors gets plenty of sprites on screen and rarely slows down and is just a much better playing game. This guy really didn't do the game justice as he clearly doesn't realize how many moves their actually are in the game. It is the best beat'em up of the 16-bit era.

Repeat a lie enough and fools will believe it eh? 😂 The rationsl retro gamers have woken up to the fact that the Genesis does indeed outperform the SNES in quite a few areas. I gave a specific example of Ninja Warriors pushing a bunch of sprites on the screen with rarely any slowdown and your response is to call me a liar. The proof is right there for you to see with your own eyes!
If you want to see lots of smaller sprites moving independently with great performance on the SNES play Super Smash TV, Rendering Ranger R2, Space Megaforce, or any of the Parodius games. Those are further proof the SNES was more than capable of running lots of sprites on screen with good performance. If you think I'm wrong, back up your counterpoint with actual facts as I've played literally hundreds of Genesis, SNES, and Turbo Grafx 16 games and have concluded that the SNES was the most technically impressive hardware of the three.

Because of your qualifiers that it can only be one game in a franchise and can't be on both systems, that handcuffs the Genesis to me. Streets Of Rage 1, 2 and 3 just blows everything else the SNES has to offer out of the water lol. Then to limit it only to North America, well, now we lose out on Double Dragon 2 which was excellent on the Megadrive and a shame it wasn't ported here in the US. Splatterhouse 3 is great, Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter makes the frying pan sizzle and doesn't get enough love, Sailor Moon and Power Rangers the Movie were good although a bit repetitive. As far as SNES we gotta give honorable mentions to games like Rival Turf, Sonic Blastman, and Undercover Cops which were respectable and fun. 😄

And have been playing a ton og snes and genesis games comparing them head to head. I can no longer unsee the areas in which the snes is lacking. Mainly the lower resolution, stretched image and slowdown. For beat em ups and fast paced arcade games I give it to the genesis. It really is the faster console and the extended resolution also results in a better gameplay experience for many cross platform games. However, the snes is still fantastic in its own way with diverse sound capabilities, more colours and mode 7. The SNES destroys the genesis in the RPG department.

Hahaha. What a load of bollocks. The Streets of Rage series along wiped the floor with any SNES beat 'em up, and there's 3 games in that. You've missed loads of games such as Punisher & Two Crude Dudes too, and you feature the awful SNES version of Final Fight...but ot the amazing MEGA CD one lol. Awful vid. Don't bank on your channel doing much kid.

If the SNES port was so awful, how come it sold well enough to get two console exclusive sequels?

@@SomeOrangeCat Because it was a big name franchise with a lot of fans, and that was mostly born out of the Arcade. Sales don't define quality.

I'm sorry, but I have to comment on a number of issues that seem to indicate you haven't actually played some of these games, or at least not much. The Punisher IS Frank Castle. The other playable character is Nick Fury, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. You don't have to know much about Marvel comics or anything to know that. That is like calling the two playable characters in Maximum Carnage, Spider Man and Peter Parker.
The stuff that really bothers me is the misinformation about gameplay though. Super Double Dragon has virtually NO SLOWDOWN. The game doesn't play at a hyper fast speed, probably to make grabs and reversals a little easier. That isn't slowdown though.
Ninja Warriors has 3 of the most distinctly different characters of the entire genre. They are far more than your typical big, medium, and small character archetypes found in many of these types of games. They have drastically different move sets and, if the footage you show is any indication, a larger variety of moves too compared to literally any other beat'em up from this era.
This video doesn't do many of these games justice. You should do more thorough research before posting.

Nothing wrong with this video. If you don't like it, why don't you make your own video then? Don't complain or be negative, lead by example or no one will take you seriously.
