    I'm 46 years old so I remember all of these games new. Best arcade Port is TMNT. Though not perfect NBA jam was pretty good, Street fighter 2 , MK2 was good. Not an arcade game I thought contra 3 and super ghouls and Ghosts could have pass as one . SNES overall Good system, better than Genesis.

      Not a fan of the fact that the SNES version of NBA Jam lacks music. But with controller adapters these days I'll just play the Gen or PS1 version of NBA Jam with my SNES pad and I'll just pretend I'm playing the SNES version.

      As someone myself in my early 40s, I have to say the snes was the better console overall. While sega genesis was fun and had a few titles better than it's snes 16 bit counterpart, I felt the snes simply did better conversions with their ports like MK2, SFII and TMNT Turtles in Time specially IMO.

    Turtles in time has extra levels in the snes version thats why level order is not 1:1, there is so many extra features it really is one of the best ports to snes.
    The letterbox trick forces games to not render the top and bottom of the screens so the snes can have more processing power for other things.

    MK1 was decent for SNES(the downside no blood, gore) but honestly you should have used MK 2. It's easily the best homeport of the game if you don't have an arcade near you.

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, the graphics for mk1 were better on the snes, but the gameplay was better on the genesis. I agree MK2 on snes is quite good.

    • @MKF30
      @MKF30 5 месяцев назад

      @@mattm7798 The gameplay was a little faster on the SG, the SN had closer to the arcade which is a little slower(MK1 is a clunkier game in general) but the main thing was the no gore, blood otherwise the SNES was a pretty solid port. The SG port was better due to the blood code honestly. MK 2 however was all around better for SNES in pretty much every way possible.

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, it's funny to go back and play MK1 now in the arcade and it does feel slow and a bit clunk, kind of like the OG street fighter 2(except that wasn't clunky, just slow).
      MK2 really took advantage of snes' superior hardware to the genesis. But as a kid, having mk2 at home was awesome you didn't even notice the downgrade much.@@MKF30

    • @MKF30
      @MKF30 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@mattm7798 Yeah I hear ya it's funny how the earlier MKs and SF's had that slower, clunkier feel or some say stiffer which I definitely agree compared to say MK 2 and later versions of SFII the original SFII definitely had that slower, clunkier, stiffer feel compared to Turbo, and SSFII etc no doubt lol with SF they would have 100 revisions of the same game essentially slightly updated lol. MK also had revisions but not nearly as many as SF II did haha. The closest to that would be MK3 to UMK3 which obviously UMk3 was the superior and more balanced game no doubt. Then you had MK 2 to MK3 which was a massive speed upgrade lol.
      Oh yeah MK 2 I think most if not all of my friends and kids who liked mk had it for SNES, my mom didn't want me playing it haha yeah like many parents out there at the time so I had to sneak over to my friend's place down the block to play then like a year after it came out I convinced them I wasn't going to kill anyone lol. My dad actually liked it and thought it was cool haha it was my mom who was like "I've seen that game on the news, I don't like you playing that game!" lol 🤣🤣Well if you know you know haha!

    Good video; the Neo-Geo ports to SNES were always competent but pedestrian by comparison, lacking the extra pop and gloss the the Neo-Geo games had. As I'm sure your aware a few of these games have improvement hacks to bring out the best in the SNES capabilities. Final Fight has both an arcade colors/restoration hack and a fastrom hack that are compatible with each other. Pit Fighter does have a fastrom hack but I don't really know if it helps the overall product all that much. One game that you didn't cover is Captain Commando, which also has an arcade improvement hack that enhances the SNES game. Super Street Fighter 2 has an MSU version that sets the game to the coveted 3D0 OST, which is very cool. I know that Mortal Kombat has an arcade edition hack that reconciles most of the drawbacks that you mentioned. Other fastrom upgrades include Magic Sword and Combatribes, among many others. Good times for optimized SNES games for sure.

    Growing up playing these games both arcade , snes, genesis I can clearly recall how great the arcade would be but how close the Super Nintendo graphics came close it was not as robust but very close. Super Nintendo was the more graphically accurate and impressive when it came to ports then the genesis which sported ugly & graphically inferior ports more often then not. The Sega exclusives like streets of rage and sonic were the best offerings and some games like rocket night adventures and a few other masterpieces. SNES however was superior.

    Great video! It was great revisiting these games. It also brings up my biggest gripe with the whole retro games movement over the last decade. New games that are developed are based off of the console versions of games. Which I get, but from someone that was a teen during this era, it's annoying. We already knew then, that we were going to get a sub par version, despite the sticker on the box stating it was ARCADE PERFECT! We understood the hardware limitations, but the marketing always tried to pull the wool over your eyes. This was especially true during the 8 bit era. Some were so bad, that you would just rather save the money and spend $5-10 beating it in the arcade. Many were good as shown in this video. I just wish we had retro games based off of CPS 1/2 or Neo Geo hardware instead of NES and SNES. I also understand that when this generation of developers were young, arcades were long gone.
    Long story short, imagine if The Messenger was inspired by the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden instead of the NES version.

    Speaking as a hard core fan of the game the graphic's, sound and gameplay on the SNES version are all massively superior to the arcade original. Somebody patched Race Drivin on the SNES to use the SA1 chip and proved it not only could have run much better, but in fact with that chip it would have been the smoothest running home port of the game. If he hadn't done extra coding to control the frame rate it actually ran too fast to be playable! You know somebody screwed up bad when the gameboy version ran and played better than the SNES version. I actually bought the SNES version and took it back to the store and got a refund with no questions asked.

    The letterboxing is due to the fact the Genesis (Mega Drive) had a similar architecture to arcades so was easy to port arcade games and had a higher resolution so often they were ported to Sega' 16-bit juggernaut first before porting to the SNES which is why you get the letterboxing. The original home version is done in a higher resolution on the competitor's system for a lot of arcade games. SFII was an exception to this because I believe Nintendo had exclusivity for the home release for a year.

    Ms Pacman on the SNES was actually a whole lot better; the best I've ever played(once owned this one).
    UN Squadron is super hard; I have never beaten it, but I have made it to the last level(on AVG DIFF) and the next to the last level is hard enough to the last level. Never played the arcade...
    But, to me, the secret to UNS is the planes you get; I save to buy the 250K, 350k, and 1M dollar planes. Another tip: Early on and after you beat the tank, forget those free easy money bases; you won't get much money for them; instead, play the Forest level and--as long as you get halfway through--you'll earn a lot money each time(the golden star). Then, when the home screen begins to beep, you'll have to play the 1st plane target. Buy the $250k plane, stock up, and you should be on your way...
