It seems rental bikes (and e-scooters) are often priced like tourist entertainment, not transport. Some places have cheap monthly passes, those make sense for actual commuting. But for example YerevanRide excludes e-bikes from the plans... When I visited Hamburg, their (non-e bike) system (Stadtrad) was nice: the ride was free if you returned the bike fast enough (~30 minutes). So hopping from one bike station to the next and changing bikes along the way was a viable way to pay nothing. If I read their site correctly, now it's 5Eur/year, but you still can station-hop for free after that.
Wait, what? Almost 1$/minute?!! Here in Montreal, electric Bixi costs 1.35$ + 0.35$CA/minute without a membership, and if you have any membership, it drops down to 0.17$CA/minute.
Not sure where he’s getting his prices from-I assume CitiBike subsidizes regular users by fleecing tourists and day passes. My annual CitiBike membership is $200, the e-bike is $0.24 per minute and there’s a cap of $4.80 per ride in Manhattan for up to 45 minutes. Not bad if you’re a daily user-though it’s pricey enough to still incentive going with the traditional free-for-member analog bikes if you’re not completely lazy. But NYC is a flat city-the steepest “hills” are on-ramps to bridges. And, of course, our street grid is endless straight avenues, with the best protected bike paths running uninterrupted along the waterfront…so you can get surprisingly far in 1 minute. How’s Montreal’s bicycling topography? I know the old city at least is pretty hilly-do you find the pedal-assist mandatory? (Never felt more out of shape than cycling in San Francisco. 😰)
It’s great going up hills
Agree, makes hills super easy.
Fun video! Thanks for sharing. Yes - About $1 per minute can add up quickly.
Thank you! That is so true. It was 19 minutes, so for 1/2 hour would be about $15, so really $30 for one hour. A bit steep.

12 dollars for that shitty ass ebike for 30 minutes? what a joke.
4:03 Even the dog wanted to know if it’s worth it 😂
