  • This is a 9-minute mindfulness meditation, led by Sam Harris. In 2018, Sam created the Waking Up app to be the resource he would’ve wanted when he started meditating three decades ago.
To learn more about Waking Up and start a free trial, visit: wakingup.com.
Waking Up is free for anyone who can't afford it-so, if you'd like to listen to more meditations like this one, there's no reason not to try out the app.
Waking Up not only teaches the theory and practice of mindfulness-in a way that’s completely free of New Age fluff or religious dogma-but also acts a guide to living a better, more fulfilling, more examined life.

I originally thought it would be helpful to have an "ending" to let us know when the 9 minutes is up, but then again, ... it leaves it up to us when we're through our own meditation.

    • @christianmairodrigues8513
      @christianmairodrigues8513 4 года назад +5

@@tomesky In order to keep the next video from playing automatically, you just have to disable the autoplay. Within the video frame there's a switch that shows a pause sign ( ll ) with a sliding button ( o). This button must be drawn to the left side, next to the pause sign.
Now, this action only prevents the next video from playing automatically. However, if there's an ad at the end of the video currently playing, it will play anyway, until the video reaches the end of the video's timeline.
I hope my explanation will be easy to understand.

Sam is one of the people who inspired me to share my mindfulness journey.
I started deeply looking into meditation as someone who struggles with a constantly wandering mind since early university days. Some days are easy but most days are incredibly hard to be present constantly, especially as a student. But Sam's podcast and audio on meditation has genuinely helped me become a better person and more importantly actively try to be a mindful person. Especially within a secular discourse.
Days are not easy but its the littles steps consistently that count!

Just sharing how I suddenly figured out how to meditate, and totally solved my procrastination problem, along with a single time vaping marijuana THC.
I am a graduate student in condensed matter physics, but I had extreme procrastination problem (developed during late high school years). So extreme that I felt physical repulsion when I work on stuff that I don't want to do. I tried mediation twice, for two hours total. Didn't feel anything.
About eight years later, I tried weed for the first time (small dosage, THC vape), and I felt a total lack of anxiety that I haven't felt in years, and I can do whatever task without feeling of procrastination at all. With this feeling of normality now in my mind, I spontaniously realized a similar sudden decrease of anxiety when I was watching a bobby mcferine music video on youtube. It sudden occured to me that this feeling is possibly related to marijuana and meditation.
The next time I felt the physical repulsion from procrastination. I watched the music video again, and tried to follow the mindfulness basics I learned years ago (like focusing on specific things to keep your mind not wondering). I felt the sudden decrease in anxiety in seconds and I started working with little effort.
This is how I learned meditation in a few seconds (or in eight years...in some other sense) and totally solved my procrastination problem.

As I sit here typing, I have the book "Waking Up" by Sam Harris in front of me. I MUST read it carefully again. The Title also says "A Guide To Spirituality Without Religion." However, it is the blending of three magnificent religions that awakened me: Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. Hinduism taught me that my Inner/Greater Consciousness is my core. Buddhism taught me to help that inner consciousness to observe everything else in and around me. Taoism taught me to do so in a state of deep relaxation, with no aim of "achieving" anything; to just be. Hey, just let go and smile; don't *try* to meditate, just *be* the meditation! As the wonderful Hindu manthra says: "Tat Tvam Asi (pronounced thuth thvum asi) You Are That (which you seek). As the Kena Upanishad says, That which the eye cannot see, but by which the eye sees. That which the mind cannot comprehend, but by which the mind knows. Know that to be Brahman, the Cosmic Infinite Mind also referred to as Atman (Aathmun, the mun as in mundane, often called Self) which is the part of the Infinite Brahman that pervades us. So I don't really have or own an aathmun, rather It is what my mind, energy and body arise from.

So far, I’ve done this three times and I’m enjoying what I’m discovering. I can’t explain, yet, it sure leaves me felling lighter with a sense of inside-peacefulness. (Like watching a voiceless film or an empty.....???) I must keep practicing so I can see further😝😝😝😝😝😝! I love it! Thank you for sharing! ( This is my RUclips account) I used my husband’s before 😬)

I knew about meditation for many years, but like most of the idiots leaving funny comments under this video, I was skeptical about meditation coz I was believing it was just another stupid way of contemplative spiritual bullshit. but I have started random practices almost a year ago / just gave it a try after reading Sam's book - Waking Up.. and after a while I started gradually feeling more relief, in situations where I had never been able to feel it. being an uber-impulsive neurotic person all my life, i cannot overemphasize its influence: and as Sam and others emphasize it, there is no magic with meditation, it is just a subtle technique of becoming more mindful in everyday situations.
People often say that it is just a placebo - well, I dont fucking care what that is, if it is fully sustainable and it works more than it was believed to work.

A placebo? It isn't a drug. If someone were to call it a placebo I wouldn't know what they were talking about and I'd assume they didn't either.

Excellent!. Complementary to this would be "Mahamritunjaya mantra - Sacred Sounds Choir". Listen to it for 5 min per day for at least two weeks and dive into the Source of All, Sat-Chit-Ananda, the "One" of Plotinus, The Tao. Or, simply Pure Consciousness-In-Itself. Enjoy the Bliss.

If you're not sure when the meditation ends, just listen to your shakra - there will be a bright light in your third eye that will make your pineal gland throb when this is over and you will feel your spirit come back into your body through the power of attraction.

They tell you, "You are not free; you are constrained by the chemistry of your brain. You are just a neural machine." Yet, some of them advise you to embrace life, overcome challenges, strengthen your personality, and build psychological resilience. Isn't that a huge contradiction? If my brain is the one controlling all this, then why give me advice, since neural determinism is supposedly responsible for achieving these outcomes?
However, we often lean toward feeling enthusiasm and strength as a result of applying such ideas in our minds, which clearly indicates the existence-and power-of human will. But we tend to forget to logically analyze the contradiction in such claims, like those made by Sam Harris. He says, "You are just a machine," implying that there is no "you" in reality, and yet he tells you to follow certain advice. Isn't my application of such advice proof of my will to change my perspective and thoughts about matters? Isn't my interaction with life’s events with happiness, strength, and joy evidence of my free will? Or does merely recalling something involuntarily mean the absence of free will? That’s a shallow philosophical absurdity.
The speed at which we make daily decisions and analyze situations within our minds makes people like Harris imagine that our brains are solely responsible for everything. But in reality, you are the one exercising your freedom and will through your brain. Reflect on this: the speed of analyzing scenarios when you want to make a decision or the rapid transition from one idea to another within your mind does not indicate the absence of "you." Instead, it reflects the precision of our minds. It is you, acting with will, who makes those transitions.
Of course, you will exercise your freedom in what you experience and learn. So, don’t ask, "Why did that image come to my mind and not another?" and conclude, "It wasn’t me who chose." That’s nonsense.

Take a seat either in a chair or crosslegged on a cushion, and gradually become aware of the sensations of sitting, the feeling of pressure in your back or legs, feel your arms at your sides, and perhaps take a few deep breaths
allow gravity to settle you into your seat
and now gradually become aware of the process of breathing
notice where you feel the breath most distinctly, either at the tip of your nose or in the rising and falling of your abdomen
just feel the mere sensations associated with the breath, from the beginning of the inhalation, through the pause between breaths, and follow the exhalation to the end. Simply cover the breath with your awareness
theres no reason to control the breath, just allow it to come and go naturally
every time your mind wanders to a thought, gently return it to the breath, or to the sensations of sitting, to the feeling of your back against the chair, or the cushion, to the feelings of pressure in the legs
as you focus on the process of breathing, you will also perceive sounds and bodily sensations and emotions and the full flow of your experience. Simply observe these phenomenon as they appear in consciousness, and return to the breath
See if you can notice the next breath in the moment it arises, through its full duration to the moment it subsides
begin again in this moment, noticing the next inhalation, and the pause between breaths, and the next exhalation
the moment you notice a thought present in the mind, watch what happens to that thought, to the image or bit of language; where does it go?
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been lost in thought; just notice it in this instant and come back to the feeling of breathing, the raw sensations of the movement, temperature, pressure
If there’s a mood or emotion present in the mind, notice that too, notice the constellation of sensations, in the face and the body
If you’re feeling sleepy, notice how it is that you feel sleepy, what is it like in your face, and your body
And come back to the sensations of breathing
Notice any sounds in the room; observe how they arise spontaneously. You don’t have to make any effort to hear them. They’re continuously arising and changing and passing away
With each sound, simply reveal the space of consciousness, where all sounds and sensations, thoughts, and emotions are simply appearing, moment to moment
Theres nothing in principle that falls outside this practice of meditation; you’re simply being aware of sights and sounds and sensations as they arise.
Simply notice what you do in fact notice in each moment; there’s no need to change your experience into anything
Again the moment you notice you’re lost in thought, simply observe the thought itself, as it passes away, and then return your attention to the breath, or to sounds, or sensations in the body
And just continue in this way until you can merely witness all the objects of consciousness: sights and sounds, sensations, emotions, even thoughts themselves, as they arise and change, and pass away.

Before I can observe a thought, it's already gone. All that's left is a feeling of resentment, mainly about my loud computer, but this, too, is elusive. I couldn't even feel happy or sad bringing up the memories.
But I could already see the beginnings of awareness, of taking a step back.
