I had a really good think about how I got started with electronics. I honestly think it all started with one of Ray William Johnson's videos back in 2012/2013 when he featured one of ElectroBOOM's videos and I started following his channel, I think as a result of that I eventually found Clive and other similar channels and ultimately that's why I'm here Didn't get an EE degree since I was already studying IT but programming and IT work goes well with building electronics and I can keep it as a hobby instead of doing it for a living which I think works out better for me
Really love these, and totally appreciate the splitting at 20mins,, able to watch 1 before dinner, 2 after dinner, and 3 the next morning - that's awesome... I'd be less inclined to watch a full hour or hit in one hit so excellent choice :)
5:57 YES! Just messing around in the workshop together! This alone has inspired me to create little projects or repair items that I could just as easily replace, but then to take time to teach those around me at the same time. THANK YOU for the invitation to hang out in the shop!
Thanks Clive I really enjoyed these three short sessions. I think many of us would appreciate a single 20 min Q&A once a week when you reduce the length of the livestream.
Hi Clive! I'd love to see a video about recommendations for replacing internal batteries in tools and such. What things should we have in mind, etc. I have a few tools with batteries that don't hold a charge anymore (electric screwdriver, torch, cordless drill, and a handheld vacuum cleaner that never held a charge) and I can't get any replacements in my country, so I'd have to buy single cells and replace the old ones in the packs as needed. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation! A big hug from Argentina!
One of my favorite channels. I don't really know a great deal about electronics. But I've always been that person that has an internal drive to need to know how a thing works, what's on the inside of gadget X and what makes it tick.
Best RUclips channel for my limited knowledge. Clive you have the knack and a way of explaining lots in such a simple clear manner that makes sense. I have gained a lot of knowledge from your videos. QUESTION. In time will you consider doing some bits and pieces with ebikes bldc controllers. Many of the controllers have missing features that are on these boards but no wiring or schematics so would make a really interesting tear down and hack.
Your "Fanny Flambeugh" was the very first video I saw from your channel. A few years ago now. And Clive that is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen. You made a fan for life with that x
I love that you made the reference about being self conscious about tour voice. I hate how my voice sounds on video etc. I think everyone typically fels that way
Your voice sounds different in your head due to your sinuses being connected to your middle ear as well as sound being conducted through bone. If you stand a few inches away from a wall and talk at it, you can get used to your voice like that before recording as a way of easing into it.
"It's happened very slowly, I don't feel famous, it's fine I'd like to keep it that way. It feels more personal, it's just like... you and me, messing around in the workshop together, it's what it's about." 💖
10:02 I wouldn't say that "round values" will do, but if you're working primarily with battery powered electronics, I'd say E6 values from 100 ohms to 10K will handle 99.44% of your needs.
For measuring cell capacity, may i suggest the OPUS BT-C3100 charger. it will discharge, charge and give you a readout at the end of the cycle. really good. just set and forget
I've watched all three of your q & a videos and thanks so much. Very enjoyable and interesting. The live streams have made me laugh and entertained me. The channel on the whole has literally inspired me to move my own stuff on... now I have no spare time, thanks lol.
I remember as a child of about 11 getting my 1st electric shock. Bedside lamp, lamp separated from bayonet fitting, thumb pushed in to remove said bayonet, switch still on, thrown across room into bed, several melted layers of skin missing from top of thumb, very sweaty, hid very throbbing and painful thumb from family, LESSON LEARNED........

I'm frustrated, my new soldering station (936 clone) didn't fix my bad soldering (I should have paid more). Tried to make up some cables and had trouble getting solder to flow to 14 ga silicone wire (pre-tinned even) and medium size gator clips. Used paste flux and still had to rub the wire and the clips with the tip to get the solder to take. Kept cranking up the iron up to 400C (verified with thermocouple), but was so hot I could hardly hold the iron and the smoke would burn you. Components are easier, but I get tired of scraping the traces off my solder wick sometimes. What's the clear flux you use? My flux says it contains zinc chloride (not for electronics use... what? Non-agressive paste flux). Is this flux the problem? I have new rosin flux on order. My solder says 63/37 and I've had it a long time but it's still shiny. Does solder get old? Edit: New flux didn't help. I did have some older radio shack 60/40 solder that wouldn't hardly take at all (clean but not as shiny as new solder). I'm pre-tinning thicker stuff. It depends on the current the pump draws. Generally it's a good idea to have a fuse at the battery too as it will protect the wiring against melting if a short circuit occurs.
You talk about traveling to Glasgow. How about international travel (post-covid)? Have you traveled far before? Visit me in Singapore (Srsly!) I'll take you to Sim Lim Square, five floors of dodgy electronics of every kind.
Hi, thanks for the great channel and I have learnt quite a lot from your tear downs and reverse engineering. A bit ago you did a teardown of a BMW genuine part and I was thinking if it would be possible to do a tear down of a genuine part and a 'cheapie' Chinese knock off. Cheers!

Honestly if you'd done this as an hour+ long vid, I'd have watched, mostly cos I've been cleaning, repairing and lubricating an Amiga external floppy drive (which for some reason people pay silly money for!!), so always good to have something to listen to as I do stuff... :D
I once worked at an educational place using computer to teach typing, spreadsheets & stuff. One of the computers went dodgy - I fixed it with a drop of oil on the CPU fan !
Yeah, that works for a short while wetting the old dried up grease in ball bearing fans, though in sleeve bearing types, it's what they need on occasion to last years... :)

Following the question about the mercury rectifier, have you seen the recent videos of the deep shelters from the urbex communit? For example TheSecretVault was inside, and in each of them they found (not in use; at least not switched on) mercury rectifiers. Also PhotonicInduction recently did a video showing one he powered up (In his lounge! The guy seems bonkers!)
I watch your videos constantly, and learn a ton from your breakdowns of devices and electronics, thank you for everything you do, primarily. :) Have you ever looked at rechargeable usb aaa/aa cells with the built in usb connection rather than an external charger, adapter, or brick to charge them, tested their performance bychance, or torn them to bits? I think I can almost envision how they do it but knowing how cheaply these could be made I want to be sure its not going to break from normal use, intending for gameboys. I may have missed this if it was a video at one point. There are so many on amazon in general with positive score and tons of reviews that its difficult to choose based on that alone, this may not be the place or way to ask, but may I ask for help?
'Accent chamelion' - an new term to me - but yes Clive, your accent will change - mostly between Glaswegian and light Glaswegian - depending on whether you're in Glasgow or not.
Accent Chameleon: I definitely do this...I have lived all over the US and my accent changes very quickly to what is around me...the "Valley Girl" is my most hated. This has a drawback when ordering Chinese food...or any foreign stuff really...until they get used to me...they usually think I am making fun of their accent.
My wife is an "accent magnet" whoever she is with she picks up the accent, people think she does it on purpose. I can always tell when she is speaking to her family in Wales because her voice changes so much!
OK, now the comments seem to work again - amazing! Anyhow, I recently talked with someone in one of my technical Telegram groups (Computer and Linux stuff) and your name came up, Clive. I pointed him to your most famous (nowadays ancient potato-quality) video about "Fanny Flambeaux", and he asked me "Is it true that Clive has been locked up in jail at one time?" - and while I don't think this rumor is true, I still think that you'd get a chuckle out of this question, so I thought I'd ask it here ;)
Here’s a question: I’m currently drinking a kimchi sour beer. I know you tend to have German gose style beers in Europe, which are sort of salty, but I guess you’re more of a traditionalist - Guinness, Bass, etc. Am I right? Do you have an opinion on nontraditional styles of beer? Hate IPAs like I do? :) Favorite beer if someone else is paying? Also I just want to say that I appreciate your Alzheimer’s videos - they’re honest and accurate, and I feel (having gone through the same as you) that content like that is super uncommon on RUclips and sorely needed.
I am curious if you had seen FranLab's video about how many annoying marriage proposals she gets...she was asking you, aVe and others get them too? I am super curious curious if you had seen that, and *do* you get them as well!? Thank you!! 😊

Here is a question for you Clive, since you mention you enjoy videos like Ave and others. There is a popular anime series called Dr. Stone, and many episodes show how he creates various things like Edison Bamboo Filament Bulbs, Radio, Sulpha Drugs and more despite living in the "Stone Age".
I have nothing to comment. I just like the videos.
3rd question: what was the highest voltage You worked with? DC and /if AC
My projects use 15KV-AC and 27KV DC, as the highest on my workbench. What about you?
@@d.t.4523 most I ever used was 5kV DC and for huuge magnet 165V 16A DC at work setting, at home i try to stay close to 5-12V dc because i lack proper tooling to go high safely at home
@@marcinkowalczyk647 It's hard to put a price on safety, so do what you can. My Salisbury Class 1 gloves are rated to 20KV by testing! I have the 16in long version, with the leather protectors and a GB-114 carrying case. It's a $400 kit. I prefer to not get a shock. 👍🏻 Ebay, etc, sites sell used gear if you want to try them cheap. I prefer the "fresh" setup.
Do what you can, and work your way up if you like. Noen lights and electrostatic air filters can be a nice side hobby income too. Good luck to you!
@@d.t.4523 thanks! also 1 thing i forgot that was HV was HeNe tube that ran on 8KV start with about 160k ohm ballast ~5ish Kv (not sure) running, but that was MILSPEC SURPLUS so it was all rubber sealed so that i could use at home with 11V 3A input DC, I do have 400V AC gloves for use but they are very clunky to use, so that's why i prefer to leave HV work to where i am SURE i can do it safely! with HV it is very easy to kill yourself be being careless so my word do anyone i absolutely agree with You SAFETY FIRST !
@@marcinkowalczyk647 Cool! Now, get out there and up your voltage game! 👍🏻 😆
Clive when you do start to ramp down the live stream times can you start streaming at a later time, as I live stream at the same time as you now, I’ve always streamed at 8am Sunday NZ time, but it overlaps with your streams so I end up with people popping in and out between our streams.
Thanks for these videos, they were fun to listen to. One very minor point; as I live very near to Heysham, I can confirm that it's pronounced HEE-sham not HAY-sham.
Did he say haysham ?
Apropos to your blinkenlights, ever since I saw Gerolf's "Sci-Fi" desk on his TPAI channel, I've wanted to build one. Need to figure out the space thing though... 🤔 ("Space" as in cubic volume, not vacuum and stars. Bloody English language. 😅)
I’m an accent chameleon sometimes. Sometimes it’s copying accents I hear, sometimes I go back to places I used to live (Montana sound vaguely resembling Gary Cooper’s, for instance).
Can you show us your set up?
Sorry Clive, you're famous! :)
How about doing the zoom meeting with other electronics youtubers again?
I loved that video. :)
I missed that, who were involved?
@@combinedagent It was on Dave EEVBLOGs channel ruclips.net/video/Ricc9IZNuPo/видео.html

Half the time I never know what I'm really watching lol
But it's fun to pretend
Hey Clive, I read an article about the Isle of Man that said some wealthy or famous people have lived there. Musician/composer Ronnie Aldrich being an example. I was wondering if you've met many folks like that on the island.
It's a popular exile for rich people. But they make up a tiny minority here.
There's a couple of them near me - old cinema - unless they've been scrapped.
I like the RGB order of thumbnail colors :)
Hi Clive love your videos😊 what’s that purple pen called you used for your drawings
I watch your videos constantly, and learn a ton from your breakdowns of devices and electronics, thank you for everything you do, primarily. :)
Have you ever looked at rechargeable usb aaa/aa cells with the built in usb connection rather than an external charger, adapter, or brick to charge them, tested their performance bychance, or torn them to bits? I think I can almost envision how they do it but knowing how cheaply these could be made I want to be sure its not going to break from normal use, intending for gameboys. I may have missed this if it was a video at one point.
There are so many on amazon in general with positive score and tons of reviews that its difficult to choose based on that alone, this may not be the place or way to ask, but may I ask for help?
My heart about stopped seeing your reaction, thank you for seeing me. Goodness, I thought I'd be missed
'Accent chamelion' - an new term to me - but yes Clive, your accent will change - mostly between Glaswegian and light Glaswegian - depending on whether you're in Glasgow or not.
I like your behind the scenes videos like the Edinburgh tattoo, will there be any more like that.
Yes. I hope so.
I pointed him to your most famous (nowadays ancient potato-quality) video about "Fanny Flambeaux", and he asked me "Is it true that Clive has been locked up in jail at one time?" - and while I don't think this rumor is true, I still think that you'd get a chuckle out of this question, so I thought I'd ask it here ;)
I've been arrested and had a few other police incidents in the past.
3:24 I genuinely think that is so sweet....Just wanted to let you know....
I am curious if you had seen FranLab's video about how many annoying marriage proposals she gets...she was asking you, aVe and others get them too? I am super curious curious if you had seen that, and *do* you get them as well!? Thank you!! 😊
Are you going to do a Part 4?
After decades of electrical work my hands ach, crimping, twisting screws, cutting etc. Anyone else have sore hands all the time? Recommendations?
Sharp side cutters and tools designed to make the work easier will help a lot.

Honour is concerned merely with such qualities as everyone may be expected to show under similar circumstances; fame only with those which cannot be required of any Mam Man
. Honour is of qualities which every Mam man has the right to attribute to Him or herself etc.; fame only of those which should be left for others to attribute( the Aliens). Whilst our honour extends as far as people have knowledge of us; Fame Runs In Advan ce, and makes us known whoever it finds its way.
Have you never seen/what do you think of Tim Hunkin’s machines (and YT channel)?
His weird arcade machines are great.
Damn I missed the first three when are you going to have Q&A part four?
More nuclear stuff please, but based on your and my location, do it with wind from the EAST please !
Clive are you and your brother going to do another Christmas eve dinner?
That depends on Ralfy being in the mood for it.
Questions to be answered , Part 3. (Reasons to be cheerful (Part 3 ))
Where can I get this radium gin?
IIRC some supermarket gin + drain tracer dye (the latter not really recommended for human consumption though...)
Would this be something you'd be interested in watching perhaps? Mythbusters Kari Byron goes over some of the things he does at ruclips.net/video/HpV85d1hm6I/видео.html and I think you would enjoy it.
i know this isn't a political question but more football/sports... would you share as a fellow weegie which team you like?
Love these q and a videos and indeed all the content from your channel. First started watching your videos about the water heaters and went on from there. With the recent and extremely sad passing of Sir Clive Sinclair I was wondering if you'd ever had any experience with the zx spectrum and if he'd influenced you in any way at all.
What was the sketchiest repair you've seen
Hi Clive re your extra work what have you appeared in ?
