- This arrangement of My Soul's Been Anchored" was first performed by the Moses Hogan Chorale on February 21, 1999 at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans. The Trinity concert was followed by the final tour of the Moses Hogan Chorale which would include concerts in Chicago (Orchestra Hall), St. Louis (The Cathedral), and Los Angeles (Dorothy Chandler Pavillion).
I believe this is one of my performances in the alto section of the choir, although Moses placed my range as contralto. I so enjoyed my brief stint as a member of the chorale. Moses Hogan was a musical genius, and we were all blessed to have known and worked with him.
Am I the only who prefers this tempo? This is the most powerful version on RUclips in my opinion.
yes, and it's Hogan himself conducting. Why does everybody do it way slower than the written tempo? I'm clocking them at around 98 beats per minute, which is above the tempo he wrote (quarter=ca.84 in the published score)
This is the arranger directing this. I think his tempo is exactly what he wants!!!
When I was in high school we got to perform this song and sing till the spirit moves in my heart at districts chorus under the direction of Mr. Hogan himself. He pushed us hard and we kept this pace. Also if you learned this song under him he told us to drag the part my souls been aaaanchored in the lord. Wonderful man.
finaly someone who truly appreciates good choral music
Moses Hogan is directing the ensemble and he is taking his piece at the tempo he desired (unless he had too much coffee). Your critique about "lose all the value of the song when it is so sped up" is like telling a famous painter, you don't agreee with his painting.
Moses Hogan is greatly missed...his pieces are raw emotion created by his wonderfully composed music.
We performed many arrangements by Moses Hogan when I was in high school. We took top honors at many national competitions with performing his work and some of our members had the pleasure of being under his direction before he passed.
These are the pieces I most deeply cherish!
My heart almost exploded when the tenors got to the Hallelujah. Every part was great tho every part was fantastic. I get chills EVERY time. wonderful
Soprano 1 rocked the FREAKING HOUSE! I love the speed of this two. Did not drag at all!
Chills. Absolutely amazing!
Phenomenal. Nearly makes me cry each time. I can't wait to have my choir sing Hogan once I start teaching.
it fine just the way it is!!!!go head moses.
This has to be the most moving performances I've seen of this piece. I performed this piece in my college choir, and it so difficult. Hats off to this group!
YES YES YES! This is fantastic. Nobody does it this fast...because they probably can't with this accuracy.
that soprano 1 is my inspiration!!!
He can sing it however fast he wants! He arranged it. lol. One of my favorite songs from my favorite director/composer. Go Moses!
I DO LOVE BLACK AMERICAN PEOPLE SINGING THIS SONG!!!!! it's soooooooooooooooo AWESOME!
I love MH's music - I've sung with him and have his recordings. When I came to listen to this video I was interested to read the comments regarding tempo, and decided to check out the score. Moses indicates this (apart from the introductory measures) should be around ♩ = 84. This tempo is pretty much ♩ = 99/100. Even Moses took liberties. Gone way too soon... ♥
Yes, participating in the live concerts was pure joy so you are correct in your observations regarding tempo.
Guys what is wrong with you! This is the Original Moses Hogan Chorale and Moses Hogan (directing)..This is how it's done!!! Wake the hell up folks!
YYYYEEESSSSS !!!!! the men are killin this !! ahhhh this song gives me chills !!!!
Beautiful peice of music...
beautiful! just beautiful. love the articulation even with it going this fast you can understand each and every word with isnt easily done in most cases. i cried tears of joy!
Love, love, love the basses in this song, goodness.
It was a joy to be in attendance at a concert to culminate a workshop that this esteemed musician conducted in my local area about 10 years ago. He departed this life way too soon from a stroke....choirs of all levels will be blessed for years by his vast body of work. RIP brother Moses.
Absolutely AMAZING!
GREAT CHOIR :D
i think, no body could beat this choir in gospel spiritual score
When I was in high school, our chamber chorale pulled this song off amazingly. That was 6 long years ago. If you can't appreciate this song while it's being conducted by the original composer, you are obviously not a singer or even a musician for that matter. Good day.
Stunna, that is a sharp observation you made there! I love the fact that someone else caught that on here. I'm sure Moses hogan would have appreciated it too.
That IS HIM!!!! What a Legend!!
WOW. That was AAAAA+++++. Flawless and intense!!
Spirit-filled! Anointed!
Beautiful!
GOOSEBUMPS!!!!!!!!
Nebraska All-State Choir 2008 did this! Love it so much!
i guarentee yo uany high scholl choir will never be able to do it this good, most college choirs cant
They're flying!
oh yes and the church said amen
we're singing this song in chorale. i love their soprano sound..its very nice
Gives me goosebumps every time :D
Yes! Sopranos represent!!!
yall betta sing is sounds rich!!!!
just one word 'Amazing'
this is my fav piece :) we had 2 sinq this in chamber choir
lovin the basses
go tenors - 2:16. And go sopranos! of course I'm biased though :D
I'm glad I got to hear it the way Moses Hogan intended it to be. Now I know my choir sang it way too slowly.
them basses representin!!!!!!!!
Wow!
i sang this at region choir last year
@evifnoskcaj its Moses Hogan himself...thats who the hell it is
At 0:28, watching the basses rock that low E loud and clear was amazing. That's hard to do.
Amazing!!!
Dude, this is the perfect tempo! We sang this at my choir, and we did the same thing with the same tempo --___-- Pssh, you people >:3
well sung.
Actually, that isn't quite true. Singing is an athletic activity. The idea of 'total relaxation' is a nice one, but it will lead to trouble. It is very common to give your diaphragm a little kick or activate your sphincter ("squeeze your butt cheeks") to give your higher notes the support they need. But no one should HOLD those for any length of time. It should be a quick pulse.
Hope this helps.
Arethere any other videos of Moses Hogan directing? I haven't been able to find any. :(
I like the way Salt Lake Vocal Artists sang this song.
nice, very rich American heritage.
They say it best at about "2:12-2:17 "oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, OH YES!"
Why on earth did they have a final tour? What happened?
moses hogan quit
in most cases I would agree.. but! thats moses hogan himself directing soo yeah.
For me, I dont think "total" relaxation would really work. Its like its between tense and relaxed. If you know what part of your body should be quite tensed and what should be relaxed, then I think your on the right track.
Wow! This song make me wanna go to church.lol
SING THAT!!!
Does the Moses Hogan Chorale still rehearse???? If so Where?????
I hope you went.
Most Baritones can hit most notes above a G4 (Notoriously some operas require a baritone to match Tenors with a C5, but the highest Baritones hit are G4.
No, I know which A you are talking about(A4), and yes, I can hit that G(G4).
Most basses or baritones should be able to hit that note.
👍👍👍💞💞💞💯powerfu
@VanSensei i thought it was a D. im prob wrong then
Well, that is one singers opinion, not a fact. Pavarotti was a master singer but not a master vocal pedagog. I understand what your saying and am not trying to have a youtube 'I know more than you (insert swear word here)' conversation. But this is a widely taught technique. Keep in mind, it's not for every high note and it's not happening all the time. It is just a subtle tool that can be used when appropriate.
I think its too fast..
There is another choir that does a TON of Moses Hogan Arrangements. Sometimes better than the Moses Hogan Chorale themselves! See for yourself though. The group's name is Atlanta's Chorale New Creation. They have several Different Pieces Posted here on You Tube.
@kirbycon2 You sound just like my chorus teacher except he has been teaching for like 25 years already...
Its Great at any tempo! Maybe they were singing this as an encore and were in a hurry to get off stage. After a long concert, short and sweet is best.
I love these comments.... people talking about their choirs and degrees and their expert opinions critiquing a song that is being directed by the composer! IDIOTS!!! I mean it says "Moses Hogan Chorale" at the top... who would know better you are his choir..LOL! I love pseudo-intellectuals
No, our choir did it that fast, Aaron.
its just you
sing chirun!!
Love the sound, hate the tempo. Much better when half as fast.
high school
Well I'm a Bass 2 and I can sing a G, so the A shouldn't that hard for a Tenor 1...
G what?
... and college
Octave above that skippy
@Arsenate22 or you could be a real tenor and just sing it
Well then you may want to call the University of Michigan (The second rated music program in the country) and tell them to take away my masters degree
Th
haha becuase theses are the people who sing it orriginally :)
It's so FAST! Oh my gosh. It's a fast paced song, but you lose all the value of the song when it's so sped up.
I guess that's just the classical singing talking. :x
The basses at the beginning were a little sharp when they went to the low note.
But other than that.
Great job on staying on pitch at this tempo.
Do you realize that this is the composer himself, Moses Hogan, and his chorale performing his own composition?
@@evifnoskcaj what did you hope to accomplish by responding to a 13 year old comment? I bet you also go on yahoo answers and respond there.
@@derajrambo ignorance knows no age, and yours needed correcting. The correct response is gratitude.
maybe i will because i can pretty much anything i want, i make 90,000 a year while you sit on youtube pretending you're in a choir thats St. Olaf. caliber, unlike an adolesent teenager i do not need to lie to comfort my own insecurities
