Thank you so much because I’m one of the original members of the Moses Hogan Chorale and I was in this recording. I was one of the first sopranos; I cry when I hear all of these songs Moses wanted perfection and we gave it to him. I loved Moses so much, I loved everyone in the group this was my family and we loved music.
@@averageloobs9597This is the original, hand selected choir formed by the composer himself. Historically speaking, this is as original of source material as it gets and is not only incredibly valuable, it is historically significant. This is also uploaded by a member of this ensemble. The respect this requires is not only very well earned, it is wholely deserved.
This is still the best performance on RUclips of this Moses Hogan arranged spiritual. Best for diction, tempo, pitch, tone, articulation, elocution, locution, pronunciation, speech, intonation, inflection, delivery and PASSION.
@@averageloobs9597 Your opinion is like saying a 1900's recording of Beethoven 5th is better than (if only we were so lucky to have it!) an original recording of Beethoven's 5th performed by a hand selected orchestra conducted by Beethoven himself. Please be mindful.
Perfection! You have to listen to this Chorale to hear how it is supposed to be sung! Every note, every rhythm! Thank you, choir, Thank you, Maestro! We are still listening.
That's awesome!! I am proud to say that I was one of the baritone voices you hear on the recordings of each of those selections. Much respect to your director for including the works of Moses Hogan in your college repertoire.
Thank you for uploading this and for everything you have personally contributed to the Moses Hogan Chorale and to performing the works of the brilliant Moses Hogan, and to share his works and to help educate others. It is an honor to able to view this footage, listen to the splendour of its recording, and to be able to communicate that to a member of the Moses Hogan Chorale.
Moses Hogan was a genius. I am honored that my choir is doing a tribute to celebrate him for our Spring concert. Nothing but TEN amazing Moses Hogan songs for the concert. I am so excited!
We miss you, Moses!!! You started a movement and your legacy and purpose live on in your music and the inspired musicians you've left behind. Thank you for what you gave so passionately.
Went to Oberlin when Moses was there- He and I had the same piano teacher, the incomparable Joseph Schwartz. There was always a natural glow around Moses as a young man. He had and infectious smile and was a friend to all. (not to mention an amazing pianist). He was taken too soon.
My choir teacher told me to look up this peice (We're doing it as well for our Solo and Ensemble group) and I can see why he wanted us to see this! God that was good!
I am STILL getting goosebumps every time I listen to this. The older I get, the more I can tell they are good, *really* good, at what they do. The tenor part would be really hard to keep under control, and they made it look easy. Man, listen to them all.
Yes, you can learn the styles and how to intonate as such, but we're not here to argue, we're here to listen to an awesome choir singing an amazing song. YOU GUYS ROCK!!! No pun intended.
Moses Hogan had an amazing way of incorporating the effect of the lyrics into his song. This song is almost sort of a chilling spiritual and you can definitely see & hear that through the singers. Amazing song, amazing group!
this is my favorite spiritual EVER. definitely moses' best piece, which is VERY hard to choose! the women sound amaaazing during "if i could i surely would!" LOVE IT!
My high school choir is starting to learn this..i didn't think we should, and after watching this performance, my doubts were confirmed. This choir is truly amazing, and we're clearly not ready for such a difficult piece.
This is just how my high school sound back in the good ole day 97-00 Suitland high ,in forestville Md.those were the days. When Mr Hogan came to my choir they asked me to sing and i chocked ...a rareity.
We were blessed to have him as a conductor in high school for Sacramento honor choir. We sang this song. Still gives me chills. Rest In Peace Mr. Hogan.
His works are amazing. My college choir director loves having us perform his works. We've done Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, My Soul's Been Anchored In The Lord, Ain't A That Good News, Good News (Chariots A Comin'), and most recently Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. LOVE IT!
He did just pass away a year or so ago. He brought something special to the tradition, and one must remember that music must evolve and be interpreted in order to thrive and survive through the ages. One must not be so harsh.
My choir sang this Sophomore year, back when I could totally hit the high notes. I think our choir was really good. We really felt it, and we had more men than we do at present time. God this song is just so good and it introduced me to African spirituals and Moses Hogan, whom I consider to be the epitome of the genre. Even today this song gets me pumped.
I remember performing this song in my high school's concert choir...it's a difficult piece but it's alot of fun once you have it down. Moses Hogan has us beat though. That was amazing.
Our Choir did this for Northern Ireland UTV Choir of the Year. In the finals we came a narrow 2 second. I loved singing this. My favorite song my school ever did. I was a lower treble.
Fantastic ! Our choir were given the music for this last night. We'll be singing it next year. Hope we can get close to this performance. Moses Hogan is a genius
My College Concert Choir is going to sing this this semester...I sure hope we can do this amazing piece justice! Wow! Chills! Thank you so much for posting this!
What a great choir. I love a good spiritual. I am currently in a community choir of 80 and we are doing a summer concert with "Elijah Rock" as one of our songs. We have only had two practices and I have been able to memorize the tenor part. The sound is really incredible. RIP Moses Hogan your music lives on.
O MY GOO HOLY LORD IN HEAVEN ABOVE! i DONT KNOW WHETHER TO CRY VOR SCREAM! MOSES HOGAN ACTUALLY WROTE THAT COMPOSITION OF THAT SONG AND MANY OF CHOIRS SING IT AROUND THE WORLD TODAY AND TO SEE HIM ACTUALLY CONDUCT HIS CHORALE AND HE MAKE IT JUST THE WAY ONLY HE HAVE IN MIND IS SHEER AND DEARLY REMARKABLE!!! THIS WAS MORE INCREDIBLE THAN I COULD EVER EXPLAIN IN WORDS! MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS THIS CHOIR AND HIS CAREER!!!!!
we sang this in choir in high school. so many awesome memories attached to it. now singing it again in an adult community choir - so much fun. i love this piece!
im in the 6th grade choir and my choir teacher is teaching us about spiritual music and she showed us this song and she started dancing with the song and now my whole choir class sings this and dances with her when ever she plays this song
I had the pleasure of singing with Moses Hogan in Los Angles in the early 2000's and didn't learn of his passing until years later. It was a wonderful experience that I'll always treasure!
EVERY TIME I listen to this video it brings tears. Lots of tears. The music is that good. The choir is that good. And, heaven knows, Moses Hogan - God bless his soul - was that good.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hogan back in 1999. He flew up to Maryland to held teach our All-County Honors Chorus one of his pieces---"My Souls Been Anchored in the Lord". He was impressed. He said he wished LA had such a program. He signed a copy of his song for me. I still have it. My high schools Concert Choir did this song in 2002. We got 1st place & Grand Championship honors in New Orleans.
What powerful singers & dynamic director. Superbly done. This piece by Mogan brings goose bumps on my skin & tears from the eyes. You guys really rock.
A couples a years ago when I was a member of my college choir we sang this piece of art in a concert and when we finished singing this song people gave us an standing ovation. It was great and it gave me goose pumps. I still remember seeing a seas of people applauding and cheering. It is one of the best moments in my life.
This songs gives me chills everytime I hear it. I sang this song in choir and it gave me chills then and it still does today. Thanks for the beautiful post.
Damn that is the best performance of Elijah Rock I've ever heard. I used to do this song in my high school choir all the time. I think we were pretty good, but I've never heard a recording of it this perfect. I finally relized it was performed by original members of Moses Hogans choir.
hands down the best version of this song I've ever heard and probably the best version there ever will be. I wish this recording was available to purchase! Golden standard in every way.
WOW... is all I can say. This song is awesome. One of the chorus groups at my high school did this song, and they were amazing. And yes, for whoever sings this song, TALL VOWELS, it makes the song so much better. Oh and a Happy Belated Birthday to Moses!!!!
It aint nothing like some seasoned voices under dynamic leadership! You absolutely have to apply strict, knowledged discipline to your voices and rehearsals to sound this good! I mean their pitch, dynamics, accents, crescendos, decrescendos, intonation, accuracy, and fonation is just indescribably incredible. For Christ's sake, they even know how to apply facial expression and are not afraid (unlike some choirs) to get 'ugly' in the face to make that song sound as incredible as they do.
To BigBoi03, I want to thank you. Your cousin was a beautiful person who, like Moses, left us far too soon. It was my pleasure to honor Rhonda. I am deeply touched by your gratitude. Thanks again and may God continue to bless you as well!!
the lady that they zoomed in on at 0:28 is my grandmother!!!!!!!!!! hey mawmaw!!!!!

Your mawmaw is one of my favorite people to watch when I come back to this video every so often 🙂 she epitomises Alto Power!
Say what y'all wanna say about this recording but this is is the original Moses Hogan Chorale. You cannot beat the original. This is DAMN good
You got that right!!!!
Thank you so much because I’m one of the original members of the Moses Hogan Chorale and I was in this recording. I was one of the first sopranos; I cry when I hear all of these songs Moses wanted perfection and we gave it to him. No, the UST Singers beat them. Not because they are the original they can't beat with other choir.

The CONTROL. Every singer in the choir means business.

Oh, this brings back fond memories of my high school choir. This was probably my favorite piece we sang out of all four years.
One of the best song endings in all of classical music
man, i learned this piece my freshman year in high school and fell in love with him every since! GENIOUS!
We miss you, Moses!!! You started a movement and your legacy and purpose live on in your music and the inspired musicians you've left behind. Thank you for what you gave so passionately.

I know...my camera wasn't the best...sorry about that.
A true testament to a good choral arrangement is the "chill factor". Still get chills everytime I hear or sing this one, thank you Moses Hogan
chills, just gives me chills. i love hogan's arrangement. sang it in h.s & college.
This is amazing!! Sang this with my Concert Choir in HS. Such an intense and difficult song to perform, but NOTHING compares to this!!
