The original vaccines reduced the likelihood of contracting the virus, reduced the viral load if you did get it, and the more people that have the vaccine means a reduced number of vectors into the population thus reducing the chance of a break through infection. This happened to numerous friends and family of mine (at other jobs) that were advised to not get it by their doctors.
