Can You Spot The Difference Between These Two Jackets? - Carhartt Detroit Jacket Review

  • The Detroit Jacket by Carhartt is a workwear classic and taking a look at Instagram, Grailed, etc. you'll see a lot of people sporting the iconic and simple outwear piece. Recently I started taking a look online at the Detroit jacket on Carhartt's main website, and the alternate universe Detroit jacket on Carhartt WIP's website - and it got me thinking, why is Carhartt selling a different variation of the jacket for 2.8x more under the WIP label? Is it just branding? Or is there something else involved that makes the Carhartt WIP version of the Detroit Jacket better? So I picked both versions up and made this video duh.

    Guys LMK do you think I should hold onto either jacket? Return them both? Maybe swap out for a different colorway?

    Thank you for talking about how just because a garment is made in a specific country doesn't makes it better or worse. I'm from Bangladesh, and we have some of the most talented craftsmen, weavers, embroidered and tailors. But the fashion world disregards that.

    • @snushiess
      @snushiess 3 года назад +10

      @Billy Bob Right??? But if it said Made In Mexico, people would label it as not being high quality. It's not about who made your clothes, it's about where it was made and the racial implications that people have in relation to that. If a tag says Made in America, or Italy, people assume it's being hand stitched by some white person in lab coats, and they're more inclined to spend more money on it. Even though the companies are outsourcing majority of the work to skilled immigrants that are okay with being paid less, because they wouldn't be able to sell these products themselves. Primarily because society would deem it of lower quality, since it wasn't made by a white person in a lab coat. Keeps propagating the cycle.

    • @snushiess
      @snushiess 3 года назад +4

      @Billy Bob then you have to redefine what high quality is. A lot of things that are deemed high quality doesn't last long , i.e intricate beading, certain types of leather. So what dictates quality? Market value of materials? But that's also subjectively constructed. Pearls for example are expensive in the US, but super cheap in Bangladesh. A lot of things that are deemed high quality are marketed as such, because theres no fixed definition of high quality.

    I had this same dilemma last winter. I was on the fence about both jackets, but ultimately went with the OG and went to get it tailored. I shortened and narrowed the sleeves. Narrowed the body. And, changed the breast zipper to gold to match the main zipper. All that cost me an extra $85 bringing my total to $170 CAD. It would’ve cost me $300+ CAD for the WIP version. I own 3 WIP Michigan jackets that I can justify due to the huge difference in fit and colour options in comparison to the OG model. But, I’m perfectly happy with the OG Detroit Duck tailored. That’s my 2 cents. Cool video. Thanks for posting.

    Carhartt wip is a lot like patagonia in the sense that they use sustainable and/or organic materials and treat their workers well as far as quality of life and reasonable pay or benefits. The wip product has a bit more tailored fit if youre wearing a size up or your actual size, however if you wear a size down in regular carhartt you could attain a similar sizing/tailored style. I like the idea of sustainabilty and quality but i also buy regular carhartt as well because i feel like wip is a bit over priced especially when it comes to shirts.

    • @MarsOneBeatz

      For the classic K87 Carhartt Workwear Pocket Tee, I recommend trying the "relaxed fit" sizing to get a more tailored fitting tee like you'd get from Carhartt WIP- at first I thought relaxed fit meant that it would be more roomy/loose fitting but it actually means the exact opposite. For me, I have no need to size down when going with the relaxed fit option.

The best part about it is i never have to worry about getting it damaged or dirty the same way i would if i would've spent $260 on it just for the fancy zipper. Very nice comparison by the way, ive never really been interested in WIP and this video summarizes it why. The prices are usually $50-$100 cheaper so I don’t mind the slight price increase for the better fit and I live down the street from a classic Carhartt retailer. I just picked up a Detroit jacket from the Wacko Maria collab and that’s another way WIP sets itself apart from classic Carhartt, the out of the ordinary prints and materials on classic silhouettes. Let me comment from experience that the Detroit isn't a winter jacket, unless you live in the southern states somewhere. It's a spring/fall jacket. If you want a real winter jacket, go with the Carhartt active duck, flannel lined. They're $110. Great jackets.

    To be honest, I feel like the main thing that makes Carhartt WIP better forsure is that some of their products look closer to the original. New Detroit jackets don't even have snaps on the lower back! The WIP jacket is actually somehow closer to the quality of the vintage ones. Even down to the zipper on the front pocket...

  • @carpenter4lyfe305

    I didn't know carhartt made wip. I thought a different companies like A.P.C., NEIGHBORHOOD, PATTA, VANS, JUNYA WANTANABE, and others purchased licensing to reproduce existing garments to the wip line. Slightly trimmer more European. Working men need the extra room for motion and not get pinched up. Perhaps carhartt works with those brands in-house vs selling licensing? Official statements i have seen in past hadn't made it crystal clear.. thanks for shedding more light on the topic.. Great video.

    What I've learned throughout all of my fashion purchases is that I buy what I like and what I think looks good on me regardless of the price. But usually, the more expensive garments are what I like better and what I think look better on me. I'd rather spend $90 on a single t-shirt that I love and wear all of the time versus buying 3 t-shirts that I found on sale @ $40 a piece that just end up collecting dust in my closet. And really, I save money in the long run with that method. I also like hunting for great "like new" deals on higher end brands from resale apps/sites like Grailed, Depop, & The Real Real.

My longer Detroit which also has an itchy striped lining is also made in Mexico but has a lower pocket. I never actually thought about any of this stuff before this vid they are nice jackets not as baggy looking on the waist as yours seem to be and great pieces of work wear which is what they are for here in the uK with its horribly wet winters.
