Paulie Paul...The lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys & Miles Kane had a side band that was a 60s pop radio vibe called The Last Shadow Puppets. It might be fun for you to explore their two albums..The Age of the Understatement (2008) and the follow-up Everything You've Come to Expect (2016). Paulcore is alive and well. I am a Sloan guy too and there are four stone cold classic tracks on this album(Unkind, Shadow of Love, Follow the Leader, The Answer was You), so I am with you, buddy...Ok, 2011. Not a great year for my earholes, but I tracked down some deliciousness and some era goodness that may not be modern greatness, but that's how it goes...
    HMs:
    Cat's Eyes - s/t
Cold Cave - Cherish the Light Yeras
Dum Dum Girls - Only in Dreams
    Sloan - The Double Cross
    Glasvegas - Euphoric/Heartbreak
Girls - Father Son Holy Ghost
The Rapture - In the Grace of Your Love
    Other Lives - Tamer Animals
    Radiohead - King of Limbs
    10. Youth Lagoon - The Year of Hibernation
9, TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light
    8. The Chapman Family - Burn Your Town
    7. (Tie) SCUM - Again into Eyes & Cut Copy - Zonoscope
    6. Kasabian - Velociraptor
    5. The Black Lips - Arabia Mountain
    4. The Vaccines - What Did You Expect...
    3. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - s/t
    2. Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding
    1. The Horrors - Skying

Hi JB! Nice to see the Black Lips! I really dig their 2020 and 2022 albums but haven’t explored beyond that. I think that Horrors album is lovely but I haven’t spent as much time with that one as others. So much dang homework! 📚 Cat’s Eyes is a Faris Badwan project?! Gonna have to check that out!

We are definitely getting into some fallow years here... But I am still able to crank out a top ten list, though I have to admit that I am not willing to die on this hill.
    10. A Woman Falling Out of Love, Aretha Franklin (If it's Aretha, the album doesn't have to be good.)
    9. 21, Adele
    8. Move Like This, the Cars (better than I expected it do be)
    7. The Old Magic, Nick Lowe (Nick Lowe could fart into the mic for five minutes and it would still be better than most of what was released this year)
    6. I Feel You, Herb Alpert and Lani Hall
    5. Metals, Feist
    4. Rare Bird Alert, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers (I'm not normally a fan of bluegrass, but this is pretty good stuff)
    3. Let Them Talk, Hugh Laurie (brilliant comic actor who is also a very talented pianist)
    2. Artificial Heart, Jonathan Coulton
    1. Smile Sessions, the Beach Boys
Technically, I shouldn't include Smile Sessions, since it's a compilation, but what the hell. Sue me.

@@AsItShouldBePodcast I just listened to that track this week. A couple other things that came out yesterday you might like are The Resonars - Electricity Plus, a power pop/garage psych band formed in Tucson in 1991. This is their ninth album, still going strong. I'm trying to get more into The Lemon Twigs, also with a new album -- Shindig! mag is bananas over 'em. One of my favorite 21st century psych pop bands is The Sonic Dawn from Denmark. Their 6th album, Phantom is out next week, and will be a must hear!
Elephant Stone, Levitation Room and The Galileo 7 also released albums this year that I'd recommend for fans of Redd Cross, power pop, garage psych, etc.

Hi guys. 2011 a low decent for myself.
I agree with all the Hate lists.
Paul--- REM Collapse Into Now is just a skoch better imo. than Accelerate.
I love "hollow man" and "man size wreath" off that one.
    "Uberlin"
"Everyday is yours to Win"; "Blue", and "that someone is you" were my favorites on "Collapse..."
All together considered, was an ok album to go out on. Longtime fans understood.
---I did really like many tunes off "Around the Sun" as well.
**Didnt Capitol records & The beach boys finally put out the Smile Session boxset this Year??
The Only Thing worth a darn this 2011.
i loved SMILE but i found it a bit overwhelming still awesome.

Hello Marco. Accelerate was a great comeback album after three duds from one of my favorite bands of all time. I like the album a little better than Collapse into Now. Hollow Man is a top 10 song of the year for me (#7, I think).

I will check out the Pugwash! I had a visceral hatred for Arctic Monkeys when they first came out cuz the hype was ridiculous. But they started growing on me on their second album. This one was the first where they started working with Josh Homme, but the songs aren't quite there. I always have time for Sloan, great stuff. I was revisiting the Smithereens catalog, and this one is new for me.
I tried to get y'all to check out some Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Graveyard and Blood Ceremony before this episode, but I'll keep tryin! Also Syd Arthur, Fuzz Manta, Castle, The Devil's Blood, The Sand Pebbles, The Luck of Eden Hall are all great psych prog, garage psych, psych noir, etc!
I've been binging these episodes since last week so I'm kind of OD-ing and I just wanna slap Tommy. I can tell y'all get that urge nearly every time, lol. But props to him for abandoning all ego and sharing his Justin Hawkins lookalike phase. He nearly pulls it off, catsuit and all.
    1. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust
    2. Graveyard - Hisingen Blues
    3. Elder - Dead Roots Stirring
    4. TV On The Radio - Nine Types Of Light
    5. The Vaccines - What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?
    6. Blood Ceremony - Living With The Ancients
    7. White Denim - D
    8. Been Obscene - Night O’ Mine
    9. Sungrazer - Mirador
    10. Premonition 13 - 13
Syd Arthur - Moving World EP
Spirits Of The Dead - The Great God Pan
…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Tao Of The Dead
40 Watt Sun - The Inside Room
    The Feelies - Here Before
    Fuzz Manta - Opus II
    Vektor - Outer Isolation
    Castle - In Witch Order
Witch Mountain - South Of Salem
Hammers Of Misfortune - 17th Street
The Devil’s Blood - The Thousandfold Epicentre
The Luck Of Eden Hall - Butterfly Revolutions Vol. 1 & 2
The Sand Pebbles - Dark Magic
At Devil Dirt - At Devil Dirt
    Amplifier - The Octopus
    Cosmic Psychos - Glorius Barsteds
    Serpent Venom - Carnal Altar
Charles Bradley - No Time For Dreaming
Pete & the Pirates - One Thousand Pictures
Bubblin' under: Green & Wood, Mastodon, Tom Waits, Fellwoods, Wo Fat, SubRosa, Orchid, Rival Sons, PJ Harvey, The Black Watch, Orango, and High Spirits! High Spirits is from the genius of Chicago's Chris Black, who's involved in lots of bands including Dawnbringer. He melds the best hooks of 80s AOR with NWOBHM style riffery. Fun stuff, great live shows where they coordinate in all white jumpsuits and such.

Enjoying my deep dive of Pugwash, also wrapping up catching up on Redd Kross, Brent Cash, three Sloan albums I didn't have, God Save the Smithereens and 2011.
Now your turn! I think one of the problems yall are having with the, um, 21st century, is that there's so much freakin' music (100,000+ albums released a year), and when you go through whatever critic's lists or aggregate lists that you're using, most of the picks aren't up your alley so you get burned out before you get around to the ones you'd like. You need to use Rate Your Music, a community run rating site that has a ton of genre filters you can use to tailor it to what you're looking for. Paul, for example could check out one that's Psychedelic Rock & Pop/Power Pop/Baroque Pop/Progessive Pop/Garage Rock for starters. My own site, fastnbulbous, also has filters.
Bands to check out for 2012 for starters: Syd Arthur, The Honey Pot, The Galileo 7, Golden Void, Troubled Horse, Graveyard, Witchcraft, Colour Haze, Motorpsycho & Ståle Storløkken, Christian Mistress, Royal Thunder, Jess and the Ancient Ones, All Them Witches, Sun River, Orango.

What a lovely list, Michele (as always) and we share the same number two album and song from it! I saw Still Corners in there, so I’ll be checking that album out for sure after falling so heavily for this year’s ‘Dream Talk’; however, I’ll listen to that in isolation to my weekend assignment, which I have decided will be ‘Anna Calvi’. I feel like I’ve heard of her, maybe I saw her performing on a very popular live music TV show here in the UK called ‘Later… with Jools Holland’, but I can’t be sure. I’m just drawn to it somehow, so I’m going for Anna. I need to revisit that PJ album too. I know I would have listened to my friend’s copy of ‘Let England Shake’, as he was a big fan, but I honestly don’t think I bought it at the time for my own collection. A couple of other names intrigued me too, as your lists always do, but I can see it’s a rich and varied tapestry of sound you have woven this week. Hope you’re having a wonderful week yourself, Michele and I’m very much looking forward to catching up in due course 😊
PS - I tried so many times to respond to your ‘Karate Kid’ / ‘24 Hour Party People’ comment from a few days back and RUclips was having none of it! I was on a time out again, but I feel like I barely posted last week so I dunno why!
Anyway, just letting you know I tried but failed in my attempts to reply 😆

You guys also care about the community and what we have to say and we truly appreciate your interaction with us. I know you all read our comments and hopefully make some discoveries (just as we make discoveries from you.) I cannot tell ya how much I enjoy discussing music w the hosts and community members (both my regular circle - you KNOW who you guys are😉 - as well as new voices). This is certainly a special place. 😎 Thx for making it all possible . .
Stepping on a soapbox for a minute here: One of the great things at the World Famous As it Should Be Studio is that community & hosts are actually interested in what each other has to say. On many other channels people are just more or less shouting to be heard or to be first or just commenting on what's hot-right-now. It's the opposite here. Lotsa luv & respect here. That's "as it should be"- - but it's unfortunately rare.
Thanks Paul and Crystal and Tommy for making this possible. Again, i really appreciate that you are taking this series all the way to the present. Great chance to find new music and re-listen to existing favorites. (Sometimes my opinions change.) i know i am not alone in listening and re-listening to music the ensure lists are fresh.
I could go on and on. Thanks again Crystal for yer shout out. That was really so nice.😘BTW I am not that young (in my 50s) but it's nice to hear that at least i sound young 🙂. (I try to stay current even though my favorite time for music is late 60s, early 70s and late 70s, early 80s). Every era has its treasures. (Of course sometimes you gotta look hard . . .)

*pretty decent album, but for me it’s their second worst record behind their debut. Exit the Dragon is great, idk what you guys are talking about; yes, of course it’s definitely not as good as Saturation, but it’s still a great album. Their most recent one, Oui, is really good too! 😊 long live UO! 💙🧡

Haha, 2011 was a LEAN year. I only had a top 5 and that was a stretch. I know these years don't get the clicks so I'll post my list on here.
    5 - Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction
4 - Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning
3 - Lady Gaga - Born This Way
    2 - Anthrax - Worship Music
    1 - Rihanna - Talk That Talk
This was so difficult to get 5. Weak ass year.

The CD of originals on history is pretty great too .
I remember Cher Loyd ,I first saw her as a contestant on the X factor. I thought she was pretty cool if I remember and liked a song or so.

Ohh no my fav on youtube just disappointed me. Lulu is one shit show of an album that much i true. But Songs for Drella? Crystal you are the best. But that album is a masterpiece. Songs for Drella is John Cale and Lou Reeds final farwell to their friend and mentor Andy Warhol. His death was the only thing that could bring these two into the same room and record. It was the first time since the Velvet Underground days (and never happened again). The songs are perfect. It is easy the best thing Lou Reed did after The Velvet albums plus his album Transformer. You are still my fav on RUclips tho :)

@@jb8280 Hey, JB! Hope you’ve had a great week mate! Wow, we’ve hit #1! The ultimate twinsie moment, surely? What an album though, eh? A clear #1 for me, but I enjoy those others in the top five too. I’ll check out your list as soon as and comment accordingly. I’m always expecting to see a curveball amongst your picks, or a glaring omission on my part, so really looking forward to seeing what makes the JB cut!
I felt that R.E.M. album was a nice way for them to call time on a stellar career. Pickings for me - and onwards - will be slim, but that was an album I bought back in 2011 and enjoyed. I’m such a huge R.E.M. fan and I do remember feeling emotional they were calling it a day. It’s also a big regret of mine I only saw them live once, when I could - and should - have seen them a number of times. Ah well, shouldn’t complain. I got lots of gigs in back in the day, and for that I’m truly thankful 🙏
I’m not sure why I tend to do top fives. I enjoy the editing aspect I suppose, and my top fives only ever include picks I consider to be top tier within their year of release. I think I did 10 (maybe more) for the 1991 vid because it was ridiculous how many personal faves were put out that year, and I’m sure I did a good few for 2001 and 2003 too. It’s cool you would be happy to see more picks, so I’ll definitely bear that in mind - moving forward - if there’s more than five albums I feel are worthy of making my ‘list list’. In earlier vids I didn’t do HMs or list fave songs, which I regret a bit now, as I would have had plenty of extra albums/songs to include in my eighties and nineties lists. Hope you have a great day, JB and always a pleasure catching up!

Hey Christian. Another outstanding list! I am liking The Horrors but they still remain a "bubbling under" band for me. 🙃 (So far i enjoyed this album more than their others.) . . . I actually put Yuck on my listen list but unfortunately ran out of time. From what i read, it sounds like I'd like 'em! . . Still not entirely into Sea Power but continuing to investigate.. . . Elbow I am familiar with but not a big fan . . . Don't know much about Wild Beasts.
As to your HMs, I am - of course - glad to see REM and the Feelies - two favorite bands of mine - represented. 😎
I hope you are enjoying yer Friday, my friend. Talk to you soon. 🤓

Well, alrighty then! Another video where Crystal, Paul and Tommy (alphabetical) moan about how mediocre or bad the year is musically, but still give us stuff they like anyway. ;) And of course, I'm willing to chime in myself, but before I go any further, I wanna correct a mistake I made in the comment I left in the 2010 video. I made this same mistake a few times before in this series and hoped I wouldn't again, but I guess I'm a human being (not a robot as much as certain websites seem to wanna believe) and of course human beings aren't perfect AT ALL. So, the mistake is that I left an album off my 2010 list. It'd be ranked right below Janelle Monae's ArchAndroid, and the album is........ Nobody's Daughter by Hole. Yeah, a lot of people don't really care for this album. People say it's really a Courtney Love solo album, not a "Hole" album, and they're probably right about that, but whoever/whatever the artist name is, it's good, I dig it.
So now, onto 2011, and like Crystal and Tommy, I have a top 4 for the year, so here goes:
    4. Collapse Into Now - R.E.M. (Meant to be their last album, and I guess it shows. Ha. Not a great album but not bad. A decent way for them to go out, and I wish bands would go out the way they did. R.E.M. and the White Stripes anyway.)
    3. Born This Way - Lady Gaga (In hindsight, this was her peak. The peak of her popularity and maybe even the peak of her creativity. I started to respect her during this time too. The song You And I and her showing up at the MTV Awards that year as her "male alter ego" Jo Calderone sold me. She'd move on to do other things, because it turns out she just has the talent and drive to do so, but as far as her albums go, this remains her "statement" if you will. Or if you won't. Ha. And yeah, the title track does sound like Madonna's..... Hung Up, which sounds like Express Yourself. Am I the only one that's noticed that? Nevermind.)
    2. So Beautiful Or So What - Paul Simon (His last really good album. There, I said it.)
    1. Strange Mercy - St. Vincent (Been interested in her for quite a while and so far, this is the only album I've heard from her, but WOW. Very interesting and quite amazing. She might turn up in my future lists. We'll see.)
I got that Smithereens 2011 album around the time it came out, but have yet to hear the whole thing. I'm sure it's good, though. It's an "honorable mention" then. Ha! They were around for the previous decade or so up to this point, but they were making covers albums. Meet The Smithereens, which was a literal cover of Meet The Beatles (and it's how I got to see them play and meet a few of them at a Fest For Beatles Fans which I commented about some videos ago in this series) which was followed by ANOTHER Beatles covers album, then an album where they did the Who's Tommy in full (yep, that happened) and then a Xmas album and THEN the 2011 album. Almost as if they owed their fans an album of all new original material after all the covers stuff they were doing. Thankfully, they did because it'd be even more depressing if Pat died before they got a chance to do it.
I'll tell you exactly how that Lou Reed/Metallica collaboration came to be, and it starts with the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Perhaps if you need further proof of how shitty that organization is or can be. Ha. In 2009, they were celebrating their 25th anniversary and decided to put together two big concerts, two nights in a row, at Madison Square Garden with VERY impressive bills. Night 1 had Crosby Stills and Nash, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Night 2 had Aretha Franklin, Jeff Beck, Metallica and U2. Each act would have special guests on and do a few songs with them. During Metallica's set, they had Ozzy (makes sense), Ray Davies (a bit odd but interesting and "sort of" makes sense considering the history of hard rock and all), and then...... Lou Reed. At this point, you know it wasn't exactly Metallica themselves picking the special guests, it was someone else and Metallica just went along with it respectfully. They did Sweet Jane and White Light/White Heat with Lou, and I guess Lou was impressed with them enough that he asked them to record this project he was working on with him. Could've been worse. When Lou played the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame museum in 1995, he played with Soul Asylum. Imagine how that album would've sounded. Now that I think about it, maybe better than how Lulu turned out, but still.
"For people who don't like music". Well, according to Lou's widow (the GREAT) Laurie Anderson, David Bowie told her that it's his "greatest work" and a "masterpiece". David Bowie said that, apparently.
Sly Stone put out his autobiography/memoir last year where, among other things, he said he's been sober for quite a while now. Should we believe him? Well, I hope we can. Hopefully, he made a lot of money with the book too.
"Intern job"? Paul, dude, I thought you OWNED the As It Should Be Studios! That "academy award" you held up looks more like the Frank Sinatra award since it resembles a drinking glass filled with Jack Daniels. Ha.
'Lotta male/female duos in 2011. The influence of the White Stripes was still strong then.
Billy Ray Cyrus putting out an album in 2011. Obviously trying to cash in on his daughter's success there.
Truth be told, if Eddie Vedder does a Xmas album, I'd be interested, but Scott Weiland, rest his soul, not so much.
Raphael Saadiq is the dot at the bottom of the exclamation points in Tony! Toni! Tone! Small, but HUGELY important. ;)
Wait, isn't Tommy's wife's name Melissa? Is he insinuating that she lives a double life as Avril Lavigne's lookalike? Hmm.
Blakeface sounds like it could be a reference to Blake Edwards, and Julie Andrews is the frontwoman. If she still had that voice of hers, I think it'd be pretty awesome. And Come Black sounds like a dangerous medical condition, but nevermind.
Oh yeah, I will be back for 2012. Got my top 5 ready. Ha! Could be a top 4. We'll see. See y'all then. And I'm sure I can speak on behalf of all the viewers and/or commenters when I say I appreciate you doing and putting up the videos. And very sweet of you to say you appreciate our comments as well. :)

Hey my friend!! Great list as always. As much as I haven't really got deep into latter R.E.M. albums (post-Monster), I really want to check out everything they done from New Adventures In Hi-Fi to Collapse Into Now. Though I've heard the songs from those albums before, I would sleep on the whole discography. And with Lady Gaga, it took me a minute to get into her and it wasn't until I saw The Edge Of Glory video with her and Clarence Clemons that really got my attention and I went back and check out the other stuff from the Fame/The Fame Monster albums. Still don't like Telephone because of Beyonce...ugh! But I agree with everything you said about the Born This Way album. With Paul Simon, like R.E.M., haven't really listened to Paul's latter day albums after The Rhythm Of The Saints. Really want to take a deep dive into Paul Simon's catalog. And St. Vincent, I only knew her with the album she did with David Byrne...Love This Giant! And seen her on number occasions but never heard of her discography except the David Byrne collaboration album. But other than that, amazing picks. Who knows how many I would do for 2012...probably 5 or 6 LOL!!
