    There can be so many variables in making shaving lather that sometimes it’s difficult to determine if the particular type of shaving brush you’re using is really making a difference. Let’s cut down the variables and look at how long it takes to lather with certain brushes, and the quality of lather each makes.

    I find the differences in brush fibers really shows when you have a difficult to lather soap like Mystic Water. I have trouble even getting it right with my Chubby 1 Super, the most dense brush I own. If I break out a synthetic, though, it whips it up with ease. Nowadays, whenever I'm trying a new soap for the first time I reach for my synthetics first because I know they can lather anything. If I find a soap that I know I can lather easily with just about anything, my favorite brushes for face feel are badgers. As a note, not all high end badgers make lather quickly. Some of them feel excellent and make an excellent lather but still take a while to do it. I find my M&F brush to actually be slow when lathering, but feels amazing to lather with. My Chubby has more scrub and is less luxurious, but makes lather with most products extremely quickly.

    Great video and material, as always. Do you suppose you could do an updated video on aftershaves and moisturizers? Is there any product that does both sides of the trick for under $36? Proraso and Razorock didn't work well for me. and GFT skin food is just corn huskers with scented oils. So, I feel like expanding a bit further to get the desired moisture around my upper chin area.

      +JonBonesJones84 I will definitely look into an updated aftershave video!

    What is that bowl you are using? I find mine too small.

    How do you decide whether there is a need to dip the brush in water? You did it with some brushes, and not with others.

      +Ben Eyal the apparent differences was due to editing, sorry. Water additions are a bit of an art, take a look at some of my lathering videos.

    Hey Mantic love your channel and have started wet shaving because of it. I would like to point out however that yes the badger hair brushes are nice but most of them come from china where the badgers are skinned alive. To me this a good shave is not worth that cost.

      +hempseed57 I've heard those rumors too but it's hard to get reliable information. If there is a concern though you can go with synthetic or horse (horse hair comes from just grooming the animal).

    Do you find boar hair brushes tend to shed hairs more often? Or is that just down to the quality of the ones they use in cheap gift sets?

    • @shavetutor
      @shavetutor  9 лет назад +3

      +David Willanski there are some well-built boar hair brushes. It's the quality of the cheap gift sets that give them a bad reputation.

      @DavidWillanski 9 лет назад

      +mantic59 I thought so. I've found the gift set ones do the job but don't last very long, and I haven't tried a boar hair one that wasn't from one of those sets.

    Some reason you cannot say what direction it is that you're using? After all what is the point of this?

    Checked out the lazor shaver...would be great for travel..and a quick go to razor if your in a hurry..so it does have a place..in my bathroom or car..but nothing can take the place of a De or straight razor..because that's what men use to feel good about being a man.......there is no substitute ..I can see one in every car or at work..where time is critical...Good luck

    I usually take a much longer time to lather - around at least 6 - 10 min to whip up lather rich enough that looks like clotted cream.

    So, how can we purchase any of these brushes without knowing the brand or model? I've never seen anyone be so secretive about things like shaving brushes or AMAZON.

      +mantic59 Looked at the blog, and even then you were very discrete in naming the brushes (although note you did include links). Truthfully made it quite hard to figure out what you were talking about. Also, how come you didn't include any synthetic brushes in your test?

    Why are you using hard water? After all the money you spend on fancy shave creams and oils, etc., buying a bottle of distilled water is not an over indulgence.
    I have an alternative to distilled water that I use. I use the water from my air conditioner (I use it for other purposes as well). The water from my air conditioner costs nothing, and I filter the rust out of it with cheap coffee filters.
    Whether one uses distilled water or filtered air conditioner water, there is no excuse for using hard water when shaving.

      At some point you might consider installing a reverse osmosis filter somewhere in your house. They are very economical and will generate a huge amount of clean deionized water with a very low TDS that will rival that of distilled water.
