Excellent information and video and I must say, best explanation that I have heard. I don't understand the folks who own more than 5 to 10 brushes, I like a brush that will lather my soap quickly, however, the brush does not determine whether I get a good shave or not. In my honest opinion, most of the battle is fought taking a shower prior to shaving, the rest is easy if you have a good, slick soap and proper technique.
Great introductory video to shaving brushes. I enjoyed it. Along these lines of shaving brush discussion, perhaps a desirable one would be how the different kinds of brushes are less/more suitable for foaming w/ cream vs soap (If you already have this discussion, my apologies...I've missed it).
I have been using a synthetic shave brush from The Body Shop that I bought for $12. I have had the same brush for the last year and a half, and I love it! Even though it is synthetic it still rocks.
Lots of good information I have 12 brushes Badge Boar Synthetic HORSE With the horse hair brushes you do not harm the animal as it is hair from the MAIN Keep up the good videos 👍
I inherited one of those old "boar" brushes that looks like a scrawny cat when wet, but after TWO MINUTES of vigorous lathering (using Col. Conk's Lime glycerin soap) I finally got something *similar* to the Shave Tutor. Thick, slightly wet, slick, non-bubbling and long lasting lather. Now I can use my straight razor perpendicular to the grain without scraping my face! Thanks, dude. P.S. I got to get me one of those badger brushes. Two minutes is a lot of time to prep.
Watching these videos just make me happy. An updated version of this video is also necessary with the substantial improvement of synthetic brushes ;) I lately enjoy horse hair brushes from Semogue. They're simply amazing.
Thanks for getting back to me. Just had my first shave today. A lot better, just need to get my lather down, lol, I'm assuming (hoping) it takes practise, because it didn't look quite like yours. Thanks again for the videos!
Excellent use of the ironing board! It took me a while to figure out what you were putting the brushes on that was so high up, but in front of a curtain. Anyways great information as usual. I've been pretty excited the past few days. I ordered a Merkur HD razor set from mens essentials and the blades and some soap/cream from classic shaving. Now I'm just counting the days until I get to try it out.
First of all, ordinary soap provides inadequate protection for shaving. Shaving soap has ingredients such as clay to provide lubrication and protection. The brush mixes air, water, and soap to create a lather to soften the beard, cushion the blade and make it all nice and slick. Adding that air by brush action makes a wonderful lather. If you want to do without the brush, use a proper brushless cream or shaving oil. Those will also give you great slick and cushion. However, regular soap is for dopes!
Mr mantic u did a great video like always and after afew months of wet shaving i can say u really said the truth about brushes its personal preferences i after many research about brushes when i began wet shaving i didn't know. What to get and all i can say is i own 4 boar one badger and one synthetic brush and i can say i love them all but they all do behave different and i can say that my favorite one is the synthetic and then boar last the badger and i can also say that for advice if ur new and don't know what to do get one of each but if u don't like animal hair u cannot go wrong with a synthetic
after u have shaved should you have one of these brush stands where the brush hangs pointing down? or can you just stand it up.. does it matter or affect the brush?
I have a synthetic brush which fits what you describe (springy/scrubby). You've mentioned that these take a slightly different lathering technique. How is it different from lathering with a badger brush?
Is the large, bulb silver tip with the black handle a custom brush or a known brand? It's a luxurious looking brush. Can you perhaps provide the specs for all the brushes in the description? Thanks!
A Good informative video =)! I have a slightly personal question - can you use brushes to lather your private parts before shaving too? Or should I continue using the regular cream?
I currently have a escali pure badger brush that I got from Amazon...It has great reviews for the price. I have used it for a few weeks now. It hasn't shed much hair which is a good starter.I am using Taylor Shaving cream which generates a great lather very quickly. Tick. However, although I have no problems lathering up my face, it seems to me that my brush doesn't generate a lather in great thickness on the tip of the brush. Is there anything I can do to rectify this? Or is it the brush?cheers
I want to buy a shaving brush, do I go for small, medium or large? the size of the head right? also wouldn't it be hard to lather under your nose with anything but the small brush?
Another great video, Mantic, but synthetic brushes are nothing new. I just aquired a nylon one made in the late 50s-early 60s labeled Lord Chesterfield.
mantic59 today I took the final blow from my canned goop, and went to a local store to get the best stuff available to give wet shaving a try. I have the real shaving co cream and oil, along with an omega shaving brush that was 15 dollars. I use a Mach 3. Should this give me an idea on what a better shave should be like, and introduce me to better products, or do I buy crap. lol. Thanks for the time and effort in the videos. BRD
Hi Mantic, first, thank you very much for the excellent work! Second, I have a quick question and need your help as you are more experienced than me in this stuff. Which brush do you think is better, the Kent BK12 or the Simpsons Chubby CH3? Both of them are extremely expensive and I want to make sure that I pick the right one for my father. Thank you once again.
whats a good name brush? Iam new to wet shaving. I bought one of those cheap boar hair brushs at a drug store and the first time i used it the hairs kept falling out all over my face. I would rather spend more money and get a good brush that will last. Any help would be great.
do they have to kill the badgers for the hair or do they just shave it off them with trimmers or whatever to harvest the hair for the brushes? They are so cute i hope they arent treated inhumanly
my 29mm Simpson T3 Trafalgar is the best brush on the market today it's like buying a $200 badger hair brush, no cleaning the brush, no need for a brush stand, fast drying time, well not fall apart like a badger hair can, cheap to buy, i have owned it for 5 years with no problems wheelchair Larry
that will happen if you use a shaving brush, a double edge razor with traditional shaving cream or soap, shaving just went from a chore to a hobby if you ditch your aerosol and cartridge for the traditional wet shaving products
what the best affordable badger shaving brush I was thinking about buyaing Parker Safety Razor 100% Black Badger Bristle Shaving Brush with Blue Wood Handle & Free Stand -
they are killed in China where there are tons of them. Some peopleargue that they are killed for the hair AND for the meat (some people eat it in China). Others argue that in modern days they are hunted by chinese companies for the hair only, completely disregarding the meat. How exactly they are killed is unknown.
I thought about that while I had a shave, then I considered it while I ate steak for dinner, finally I pondered it as I put on my leather jacket. You know what my conclusion was? It was meh. Go be a bleeding heart somewhere else

I agree, I need to make an updated video!
Perfect, pure and simple. Keep going. I learned how to shave by your videos, my father wears beard since ever and never taught me.
Great video but, as someone already mentioned, you forgot horse hair brushes 👍💈
like the way he talks in to the brushes like if they were microphones =) Great vids!
thanks for the information.. i have been going crazy trying to figure out what the heck the difference is between all these. thanks again

All you need is a Simpson chubby 2 best badger. Dont let the low grading fool you, it is finer than most silver tip on the market.

I really love how you edited this like a cartoon:D very informative great vid
badgers are cute until you have an angry one chasing you with their razor sharp claws and teeth

Thanks for sharing, as I just was convinced into the brush and purchased the same one.

What would you say are a few of the best synthetic brushes?
how often would a decent brush need replacing? a few months?

Not to sound like a pervert but where did you find that footage of the lady pulling her stockings up?
Nice clip with basic information, I miss the brushes made of horse hair though.

Yep, definetely! =) Thanks
@dave997 They are treated as badgers.
Any websites you can recommend for a good shaving brush? I'm lookin for a good priced super badger hair brush :)
How do they get badger hair? Do they kill the badgers?
pal180 yes . In China. But they eat them
@MiroslavPiekos This video was made in 06. most likely before the introduction of silvertip.
are any badgers harmed when their hair is taken for a brush?
Your videos are very informative! Thanks! :)
it varies man many people will tell you a certain brush is the best try tweezerman for a brush its $20
my 29mm Simpson T3 Trafalgar is the best brush on the market today it's like buying a $200 badger hair brush, no cleaning the brush, no need for a brush stand, fast drying time, well not fall apart like a badger hair can, cheap to buy,

Why is lather important at all if you're just scraping the short stuble off your face. In such cases, can't you just soap up your face with your hand?
It took me three tries to get through the beginning of this video without cracking up laughing.
@mantic59 i kinda feel bad then if i end up buying one knowing a poor little animal was killed to make it. i have a big soft spot for animals.
no wonder badger is more expensive. it must be hard holding one down while you shave it :)
Thanks for the info!
yes!
I just looked it up...it was actually made in 1949!
what the best affordable badger shaving brush I was thinking about buyaing Parker Safety Razor 100% Black Badger Bristle Shaving Brush with Blue Wood Handle & Free Stand -
@Assuranipal
exactly the same man
LOL.. My father abandoned me as a child so I had to learn on my own.
"You're going to have a hundred of them!"
hahahaha :D
I bought a tweezerman from amazon. Not great but functional.
I have 2 cheaper boar brushes . They are OK. I just went out and got a supper badger . It is so nice .
Thanks for the info Jon Lovitz lol!
You forgot to mention horse hair and you can throw in goat
@assaultman45 lol. tell me that you are kidding please.
I just spray the cream in my hand, and rub it all over my face, how essential is brushing? Because I can get a good shave by using my hands.
I bet you believe Bambi and Rudolf exist. Have you ever seen the Honey Badger video? Watch it tell me if badgers are still..."cute"... to you.
Tnx! "very confusing huh" made my laugh.
lol, great intro.
