NO CLEANING NEEDEDThe best Shave Brush on the market today is my Simpson Trafalgar's T-3 better then boar cheaper in the long run it is 29mm. i mic it' it's like buying a $275 badger hair brush, no cleaning the brush, no need for a brush stand, fast drying time, well not fall apart like a badger hair or boar can, cheap to buy, I have owned it for 5 years with no hair loss with no problems wheelchair Larry Merry Christmas
I shave damn near every day, head and face. The brushes I wind up using, I do this weekly, and it truly does make a difference in the brush, especially to the older brushes. It's basic maintenance if you are a true wet shaving aficionado. Fantastic video Matt. Glad to see that myself and my family weren't the only ones that were out there doing this.
@@douglashaner6802 Nope, just my Merkur Safety Razor, couple of packs of blades, one soap, two pre-shaves, one after shave, one brush, one alun block and one stand. Pretty much it. But with time, I'm probably getting there.
How do you know it’s better to hang your brush to dry? If you’ve shaken it out, it shouldn’t drip anymore. Wouldn’t the same amount of water tension upside down be equivalent to gravity? Is there better airflow hanging up? Any physics minded folks out there?
Good info video. I wash - condition - comb my brushes about once a month, keeps them in good shape. I feel a good hand soap like Ivory or Palmolva do just fine for cleaning.
I never knew you should or how to clean a brush. I learned how to shave from my Grandfather who was a Barber back in the day when Barbers shaved as much as they cut hair. He gave me his old shortened brushes, so I just thought that’s what happens to old brushes, I still have one, but never use it. Thanks, I’ll take better care my brushes, now that I know better.
Hi Matt- Great brushcare tutorial; thank you! This is the first time I have heard of clarifying shampoo; I’ll definitely look for some for my brushes. Thanks again and I hope you have a great weekend ahead of you. All the best!
This is an invaluable tutorial for shaving brush care. I really adore my handful of beautiful brushes (all badger hair)..and the clarifying shampoo/conditioner tip is something I’m going to have to try out. And also the drying upside down thing. I realize I seldom do that because of a lack of the suitable stand for that in my inventory.
Good, practical video. When you look at the $$ that we can easily sink in brushes, a little maintainence is time well spent. Thanks & have a great weekend. Zac
I just pulled out my Bagers and Horeshair brush and cleaned them like you suggested. Thanks! QUESTION: How do I maintain my Synthetic brushes. Same technique?
thats a great idea...i have the brush for a while now but i didn't shave with it... i abused it by using it to dust and clean the counter top... i will take care of it now
My boar brush had big problems with making a good lather after I used conditioner on it. Then it needed to be rinsed a couple of times in shaving soap to preform like it did before....
Great video. Now I am learning WHY I lost my hair.....didn't use that clarifying shampoo...... Now one more thing to mention: there is an abnormal obsession by many people to use alum after their shave.....alum ruins lather.....if after washing your face (which should be done) , people touch their brushes w alum.....it will deteriorate the lather to come.. All those using alum......., put lather on your face and then directly apply the alum to see. and later wash it out with the rest of lather.....see what happens
I use the clarifying shampoo. I think I watched your video from 5 years ago because I remember using conditioner too and it made the brush look and feel better but the brush had a noticeably diminished performance.
Yeah it's a boring job but has to be done if you want those brushes to last. I use a super wide tooth comb and comb the brush while conditioner is applied, very slick and keeps from pulling out hairs👍 Thanks Matt, I bet a lot of people think shave soap keeps the brush clean🤔 Great video. Enjoy!
Very informative and interesting video and I will definitely take this onboard and act on it. Thanks very much and I enjoy watching your videos and find them very educational. Keep up the good work.
Yes, that is perfect advice and so simple. I learned this from one of your older videos. Funny, and bought the clarifying shampoo and conditioner for my shaving brush, and now I use it on my hair....Hahaha! Thanks Matt!👍
Hi Matt. Where is the apple cider vineger from the last video? I used it like you said and it worked great too. And as always - to get a shirt would be nice
As usual great videos Matt. I have a lot of brushes ranging from badger, boar and synthetic. My question is do I need to do this to my synthetic brushes? Thanks
Synthetic brushes are much easier to take care of than natural hair. The fibers aren't porous so just use some shampoo to remove any shaving soap scum buildup which is more of a problem sometimes if you have hard water.
Awesome video! I thought I was going to have to replace my knot, but after watching this, I tried to give it a good cleaning. Good as new with great performance again! Thanks!
Hey Mat, as you know we have really hard water here in the valley. What type of bottled water would you recommend to help the brush and lather building?
Would you do a review on the OneBlade Black Tie shaving cream and aftershave? I've never seen anyone review those although I've seen a ton of reviews about the razor.
Hmm, very interesting. I've never done this to any of my brushes, and I've been wet shaving for almost two years now. Now I realize why some of my brushes weren't making a good enough lather. And I was blaming the soaps.
Don't mean to be "that guy" but Borax is not a caustic chemical. It's a very natural and safe cleaner if used correctly. Boric acid is a common ingredient in eye drops and lots of soaps and lotions.

Dear Matt. (and anyone else here). We appreciate everything you do in helping us enjoy the hobby that is wet shaving, however I have found a little habit creeping into my routine. Like you I use the Proraso Pre-shave and then soap/cream, but lately when I do, I find I'm humming the background music you have in your shave videos! 😂 Am I the only one? It doesn't make the shave any better though. 🤔😂

Great advice, thanks Matt. Clarifying shampoo would have never crossed my radar.

Great advice thank you would love one of those shirts
How about synthetic brushes.... I see some residue build up....specially w Proraso....any advice? Thx
Great video Matt, this is a better method than using Vinegar, which I can’t stand the smell of:)
Do you use the same treatment for synthetic brushes also, Matt?
Yup
As usual great videos Matt. I have a lot of brushes ranging from badger, boar and synthetic. My question is do I need to do this to my synthetic brushes? Thanks
it won't hurt anything to try - let me know if you notice a difference.
Another nice vid. Thanks, Matt. Any special care for synthetic knots?
A few others have asked this- we will have to make a special video all about them / care. Thx
Hi great tips. Where can I get this cleaning soap from?
Does a dish soap work?
It should yes - detergent will break down other soaps.
Hi Matt, great video. I love my boar brushes, guess what I’m doing this weekend?
How about synthetic brush care? Same thing?
Great videos. Thanks.
One question. Care of synthetic brushes?
Synthetic brushes are much easier to take care of than natural hair. The fibers aren't porous so just use some shampoo to remove any shaving soap scum buildup which is more of a problem sometimes if you have hard water.
I've got the PAA brush cleaner but I'm going to give the shampoo and conditioner a try with one of my brushes to compare.
Which did you end up prefering?
Really appreciate this video, and great tip on the clarifying shampoo. Looks like I'll be get that soon and cleaning my brushes again.
Thank you for the great and informative video. That's a simple and effective way to my badger brushes in great 👍 shaving shape. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the great work, folks!

Never heard of clarifying shampoo
So with my badger brush, the lather is always foamy, it’s not creamy or dense anymore like it used to be. Does it need a cleaning?
Yes

Hey Mat, as you know we have really hard water here in the valley. What type of bottled water would you recommend to help the brush and lather building?
ideally something that has been reverse osmosis filtered. Or go the grocery store and get a gallon of distilled water for a buck :)
Thanks again for the info! 👍🏻
Natural hair is just like your own hair so using such products makes sense, may I suggest mane n tail
Do you need to do this cleaning method on a synthetic brush
I am not actually sure- I will have to do a follow up about this after some trial.
Would you do a review on the OneBlade Black Tie shaving cream and aftershave? I've never seen anyone review those although I've seen a ton of reviews about the razor.

Soon to find out ourselves- I'm not exactly sure. We will conduct some research and make a follow up video.

Can i dry it with a hairdryer?
may be a little hot for the epoxy knot. That's just to leave it air dry upside down.
