The Lockmeister is the OFR with Schaller's stamp on it. Schaller makes the OFR too. I have them both, same thing and cheaper too!

Great video! Question on the Schaller - does it work together with "THE KEY" for the intonation? And also, is The Key designed to remain steadily on the guitar, or basically to just set the intonation, to then screw in the saddle locking screws in a fixed, calm position? Appreciate the insight, thanks for the video!

      Hi PippPriss,
I’m stoked you liked the video!
The key will definitely work on the Schaller. You want your guitar tuned to whatever tuning you plan to play it in. You want to make sure your locking nut is not locked as you will need to retune after every adjustment. Sorry for the delayed response, I was on vacation.
I hope that answered your questions.
If not, hit me up and I’ll be happy to give any information I have. Thanks for watching!

Hi GraveDanger, I’m not super familiar with too many FR licensed tremolos other than the Gotoh and I must say that one is pretty darn good in it’s own right. The dimensions are not the same as the FR or the Lockmeister though. It seems to be a little bouncier but it stays in tune just like the Floyd. It also seems to be pretty well made.

I read a forum post recently by someone who had the metal of an OFR and 1000 Series tested by his scientist friend (who has fancy machines for metal testing). His friend reported that the OFR has a hardness of 8 (just like you said here) and the 1000 has a hardness of 5.6. That right there busts the myth (or whopper of a lie) that the 1000 is the "same quality" as the OFR except country of origin. Anyway, if the 1000 is 5.6 I'm thinking the Special must be like 3. Unless of course, the 1000 and Special are both 5.6 and they're just lying to us some more. And I can confirm firsthand that the 1000 is softer metal because my new 1000 series FR has the chrome worn off on the knife edges, just like your Special has here (also, the studs have grooves in them already). The allen screws on the 1000 are all very easy to strip too, if you aren't very careful.

I recently put a Warmoth partscaster together and used a Lockmeister. I honestly think it's amazing, and from what I hear it's even better than the OFR.
For anyone Wanting to use a Lockmeister on a Warmoth build, choose the Floyd Rose routing, not the Schaller routing. Schaller make 2 different locking trems and they are different in dimension. I was told by a Schaller representative that the OFR and the LM were 100% interchangeable.

@@primaltone9064 You're welcome :) Also another difference to consider is that the LM has a 12 inch radius vs the OFR's 10 inch.
But take the shim out of the Lockmeister and you get 16, which is a perfect fit for a fretboard with a 10-16 compound radius, considering FR locking nuts typically come with a 10 inch. I find it to be the perfect sweet spot between having low action for leads and being easy to play chords.

I believe the major differences are the fact the Special base plate is bent into shape ILO machined and I don’t believe it is as hard. That being said, it is subjective based on how often you use it and how aggressive you are with the bar. I don’t think you’d notice any tuning issues until the plate contact points are excessively worn. Thanks for watching and thanks for contributing to the channel Rodolfo!

The OFR and the Lockmeister are/were the exact same product, because Schaller used to produce for Floyd Rose! As you point out correctly the only difference is the branding! But the big difference is the price (which I only know in Euros): The OFR costs about 330 Euros and the Lockmeister about 200 Euros! That's not the Lockmeister, that's the "Schaller Tremolo". The "Schaller Lockmeister" does not have replaceable knives and is the same as the OFR (some claim even better than OFR because the Lockmeister allegedly has better plating and arm mount). The Schaller you're referring to has a pot metal baseplate with replaceable hardened steel knives. It's a good bridge, but the Lockmeister is superior.

I was so disappointed to find Floyd rose was not telling the whole story about the "Special"
When they first came out i seen the spec's for the trem and it said it is the same as the "1000"
except used zinc saddles and a zinc block. I was willing to deal with that by getting a brass block
and using it that way to save some $$$, turns out the plate is not the same metal nor are the post's.
Overall the whole trem is made cheaper than a 1000 . While i do think the Schaller Lockmiester is great
I just use the Gotoh 1996 trem' now. amazing trem for under $200

iirc Schaller got to making the lockmeister to the exact specs of the original floyd when the patents expired. So beyond the different trem blocks, they should be the same tremolo. Also, Schaller always made the original floyds for floyd rose. I bought one of those "the key" intonator things but I literally never used it. I can't loosen the retainer screw under string tension on my lockmeister so I might as well just move the saddle by hand anyway. Useless thing. Also, not a smart move to have loud music over yourself when you're explaining intonation. 😂

I’ve got the same guitar and the thing just will NOT stay in tune. After 10 or 15 minutes I have to fine tune it and after an hour or so I have to release the nut and tune it from the headstock.
If I replaced the FR special with an OFR or the Lockmeister, will it sort this tuning issue out?
I’m _gutted_ because I absolutely love the guitar, it just won’t stay in tune. I’ve even blocked the trem and used it without the locking pieces in the bridge. That helped a lot but it’ll still need retuning regularly.

    • @primaltone9064
      @primaltone9064  2 года назад +7

      Hi Matthew,
There are quite a few differences, including the base plate. The specials are bent into shape and the originals are machined. On the special, if you look closely at the side edge where the fine tuners are, you’ll see a little flare out where it was bent. The originals are smooth in that area. Also, the screws are grade 5 on the special where they are grade 8 on the original. However the sizes of everything are the same making the parts interchangeable.
