My res got stuck in a spot and I came out to feed her and saw her stuck, idk how long she was stuck but I was so glad I got to her in time before she drowned. I quickly took to item out! Now I’m paranoid about anything with holes that I put in the tub… she’s in a 40 gallon stock tank and working on build her a 110 gallon stock enclosure.
So I have a couple of no filter freshwater fish tanks and I have a bioactive crested gecko enclosure. My sons really want a turtle. They are only 2 1/2 and 4 1/2…. thought about compiling resources and if they still want one come their birthday in six months and do a set up. It’s a great excuse to do another enclosure. I’m at my base research into building a turtle enclosures. I follow Serpa designs and MD fishtanks and have seen them made in the past. Currently trying to figure out the best turtle/ tortoise/ terrapin for us.
I recommend a box turtle, they're amazing pets and very easy to care for! Especially a rescue, there's a lot of absolute sweethearts out there who need homes.
Hi Kady, I have been working with turtles for 18 years now, and tortoises for nearly 10 years. The biggest questions I ask people who want turtles are 1. What size of habitat are you willing to provide? 2. Do you have the ability to keep them outdoors? If so, what species work with your local climate? 3. Are you willing to provide more care and maintenance to this animal for a longer period of time than pretty much any other pet (outside of mammals/birds)? I have loved all my turtles and tortoises. I have 21 currently and wouldn’t trade them for the world. There are different species that are great for beginners in turtles, like the turtle in the video you are commenting on. North American spotteds, musk turtles, painted turtles, male map turtles and European pond turtles are all great species for beginners who want to keep aquatic turtles. Depending on your climate you could most likely keep all of these outside as well, which is a lot simpler in general for maintenance. If you want lunch planted aquatic tanks you will have to go bigger than the recommended size ranges for some of these species, and some of these species will shred your planted tank and your fish inside it apart. MD and Serpa both keep musk turtles for a reason, and spotteds aren’t a bad option for a similar use either. As far as terrestrial turtles go, depending on price range and habitat size, Vietnamese black breasted leaf turtles are wonderful small, planted terrarium turtles with tons of personality. They are a tater species but if you can provide the right habitat they are a treat. Any North American box turtle species is a wonderful animal for a lower price range that would do well outdoors and would eat whatever you toss to it. They can have wonderful colors and good personalities. If you are looking for tortoises, the best channel to research them off RUclips would be GardenStateTortoise. Herman’s tortoises, Russians, Greeks, and marginated are great choices as they stay relatively small and are generally bulletproof. I personally keep redfoots, which have the most personality I’ve seen out of any animal I’ve kept, but they get large and are challenging to keep in climates outside of Florida if you don’t have a large amount of space to overwinter them in for a few months a year. If you want a mini tortoise, the difficulty may be raised but Egyptian tortoises and pancake tortoises are great options for a tortoise you could keep in a beautiful glass desert scape. These are just some names for you to start compiling research. I highly recommend getting on the Turtle and Tortoise Protection Group Facebook page if you are serious about keeping a shelled friend, you will find experienced keepers who don’t force illogical and unpractical care down your throat and who work with some of the coolest species in the world. All of these species I have seen people keep on there and they love to share their passion to anyone willing to learn. Hope you get as hooked as I am, and take this journey slow. Who wins the race? The tortoise 😉 Have a blessed day! Logan
Hello @ Dan The Turtle Man In September I found a baby painted turtle nearly dried out and frozen on a sidewalk. I brought the lil one home and have been doing my best caring for him/her we call it Peter the painter turtle 🐢. Any tips would be very much appreciated.
